Home & Overwhelmed

I’m back home, and I found that my dad gave me one of his and Diana’s couches while I was gone. My couch (that I sleep on) was comfortable(my mattress is worthless), but the stuffing was coming out, and it looked ragged. He and Diana also cleaned, which was sweet. Unfortunately, they also dumped all my things in trash bags, along with the many things I have to review. They knotted those sacks up to where I have to rip the sides open. I cannot find anything, and I want to cry I’m so overwhelmed. You guys may be rolling your eyes, but I guess they thought rearranging things would be better for me? My dad also said don’t ask where anything is, just go find it. Guys, they emptied all my drawers and everything in the closets in a trash bag. I’m really really grateful, and I’m also a little lost here.

It doesn’t seem like what they did was kind at all. It seems mean to me for them to do that to you.

I know they didn’t intend to be mean, but it feels awfully inconsiderate.

@AmbiePam It IS inconsiderate. And, an invasion of privacy. They may not have intended to, but they hurt you terribly. Be honest and open with them, and ask them not to do that again. It's the best way.

I just don’t know. And I guess everyone thinks since I’m always nice I won’t get upset.

@1creekgirl I am, very exhausted. I guess I’ll start working on it after church tomorrow.

@AmbiePam It was just such a weird thing to do. I don't understand it. And I know you're exhausted from your trip.

Oh wow..talk about killing with kindness! I have to wonder about your family sometimes. At least you got a new couch out of the deal. What did they think you were going to wear?

They’ve helped me a lot over the years, but it’s like they think they can do anything, and I won’t get upset because I’m generally nice about everything. I did have some clothes hanging in my living room closet they left alone.

@snowy22315 I called and talked to my dad about it, It went exactly how I thought it would go. And no, they never would have done this to another adult. It’s times like this I miss my mom. She never would have let it go past a thought, and she would have totally backed my ire.

@AmbiePam I hope you get up the gumption to talk to them about this. You know they wouldn't dare to do that to another adult. They need to respect your boundaries. It might help to start depending on other people besides them though.

So glad you made it home safely . . . wow that the week went by so fast! Although they meant well (we know they are sweet people), they really should have asked - it's your living space. I had a memory of how it was when I was growing up. Ok, I admit I never really kept my room sparkling . . . often I'd come home to an already cleaned up room . . . my mom went through all my stuff . I didn't think much of it then as I was just a kid . . . but as I got older, it was highly annoying - felt like invasion of privacy. My living system was MY living system - twas no one's business how I organized anything. Ugh. I'm so sorry . . . believe me I know the feeling .

@much2say Yes, they did. I don’t think anyone would have even taken it since the stuffing in the cushions were coming out. I had repeatedly tucked a towel around one cushion to keep the stuffing in, but pieces would shed, and get all over the floor…It served me very well for ten years. I’ll miss the color though; it was a red couch, and this one I got from them was beige.

@AmbiePam Just curious - if you don't mind me asking. They didn't throw away your comfy couch, did they?

Gee I can certainly understand how upset you are. Seems like a crazy thing to do without your consent and I would be very upset to come home and find my home all rearranged and my stuff in trash bags. I'm sure their intentions were good but they should have asked. Hope it isn't too hard to find the things you're looking for and that you are comfortable with the new couch.

I just found out something that makes it a little more palatable. A neighbor of mine had bed bugs, and although the inspection showed I didn’t have any, nor did my other neighbors, my dad decided to spray for my peace of mind when I found out. I appreciate that, but I still don’t think things should have gone into trash bags.

@Marilynda1225 Yes, I think so. I’m a little less upset. The last thing me or my other neighbors need is bed bugs.

@AmbiePam that does make more sense but your stuff being in trash bags probably protected it all from the spray.

I don't understand why they did that unless they thought it was hoarding? Even then, it wasn't up to them to just take over that way without speaking to you.

I don’t think they thought it was hoarding because they didn’t throw anything away. But then, I don’t know what they were thinking.

@AmbiePam That is crazy to put them in trash bags. It doesn't make sense. Clean tubs would have been better.

What possessed them to do these things without asking first ? The couch was thoughtful and cleaning for you, but rearranging your things and especially to empty your closet and drawers is a bit bizarre and quite an intrusion of privacy. What were they thinking ? You truly need an explanation and they need to know not to do it ever again. What would they do if you went to their home and did the same to them while they are away ? I know that you are in a tough spot with it being your daddy and his wife.

I brought it up last night, and they didn’t respond well. They did, however, promise not to do it again. I always appreciate your support.

Oh, wow! I'm sorry that happened. They should have asked before they did anything in your home. I would be mad if somebody, even Pretty, did that to my bedroom, let alone the rest of the house. I have a particular place for everything and want everything in its place. I'm glad you all made it home safely.

Yes they meant well. They also went into your personal space without your permission. Years ago one of my sisters and Mom did that to us. We had some spitting words about it. I hope you get some rest.

Did they plan to do this or randomly cleaned up all your stuff? My sister was a hoarder and one time my mom sent her away for the weekend and threw alot of stuff out. She was not happy about it

Oh, no worries about me being a hoarder. Their primary goal was too clean, which I appreciate, but I had a corner with my stuff to review, and although it was neatly stacked, they thought I’d get through it faster if they did this. Then, in my bedroom, I had a bin of my late mother’s things. I had been unable to go through it, and I think they thought it would force my hand. They did, however, leave my bathroom and kitchen alone besides cleaning it. And they didn’t throw a thing away, at least.

Hahaha, You're just like me. I don't want people tidying my things up, no matter how topsy-turvy they are, because I would find it difficult to find things I need. I prefer my own 'arrangement' of things, equipment, etc.
