Our neighbour in the village was telling me about the ‘episodes’ she experiences at night. She apparently has very violent dreams and thrashes around in her sleep. I was especially interested as Vince’s elder brother experiences these turns too. His wife now sleeps in a different room as he throws himself around so much. He has a mattress on the floor alongside his bed as he sometimes throws himself out of bed and bangs himself on the bedside table, ending up with bruises and black eyes. Doctors don’t seem able to help him. My neighbour says her doctor says there is a part of the brain that sort of closes off during sleep but in her case it doesn’t and this causes the restlessness. I was interested to find someone else who suffers in much the same way as my brother-in-law. Do any of you suffer in this way? The photo is mine.

I've never heard of something like this before. I hope doctors can figure it out and help them with it.

I was surprised to learn about the second case. Maybe it's more common than I imagine.

As far as I know, no one has experienced something similar to this, hopefully there is a way out.

It wouldn't be nice to have such awful dreams.

This is scary, I never had such a horrible problem. He needs an enclosed bed to avoid to fall. Those beds exist.

@JudyEv - It's not really pleasant, but better than to risk to break a bone falling from the bed.

Yes, it might have to come to that. I can't imagine that he'd like it though.

@judyev My French brother thrashes about like that and has done some damage to his wife. It is related to his Parkinson’s disease.

Is that so? That's interessting. My BIL doesn't have Parkinson's although now you mention it, he does tend to shuffle now as he walks.

I don't know anyone who suffers in this way. But I believe there must be a solution.

A bowl of baby goats! All I remember dreaming last night was offering someone an apple from a bag I had but as soon as I pulled it out it became hollowed out...

How sad those horrible episodes at night. I don't have that but when I was newly 'escaped' from horrid domestic violence, I was dangerous to sleep with I am sure. PTSD you know. Still, no symptoms now. This was years and years ago.

Not to that extent. I have thrashed my arms around if I'm dreaming that I'm fighting someone, etc. I have knocked things over with my arms. I love the picture.

No, but l can make a few suggestions for example . Eat at least 4 hours before bedtime, no coffee before bedtime. No suspenseful movie watching on TV. Sleep with a very dim light.

I knew someone who called something similar, night terrors. Her son had them, and they tried therapy, medicine, and other things, but I don’t know if they ever were gotten under control. Or is night terrors something different…

That sounds so scary, Nope usually I wind up having dreams like in the movies where I experience all kinds of things but nothing to make me restless. Maybe this can give you some ideas how to help.

No I've never experienced that nor do I know anyone who does. Certainly sounds scary especially that you can easily get hurt. Your brother-in-law is smart to put his mattress on the floor. Seems strange though, that the doctors don't know how to help.

I enjoy my sleep and my dreams, but if I had those types of dreams, I would be scared to go to sleep at night, as that sounds terrible, to lose control over yourself like that while you are dreaming. The most I have done, is to kick my wife, as I was kicking a ball in my dream, and the foot really did move as I slept too, and it woke my wife up, and she then woke me up too, to see if I was ok..
