Question About a Review

So I went to review a candle, and the candle smelled amazing, but the top of the box was ripped halfway off. It did not affect the candle at all, and I got the candle free to review. However, it is a $110 candle. They solely want to know your opinion of the product, and I was going to give it a five star. But the box was ripped so I’m inclined to go with four stars. Are you going to count off a star because of a rip of the box? I just expect for $110 everything is in perfect shape. I might just go with a five star, and mention the box as an aside. Usually, I count off for the shape it’s in, but the fragrance is just so impressive.

I think I should follow your advice since you are the Candle Queen. And that is a title I aspire to.

@AmbiePam If I actually ordered the candle and paid for it I would deduct a star but I wouldn't if I got it for free.

Even though the box was torn, it’s the actual candle that you are reviewing so yes, I would do the 5 stars. I absolutely love candles, but in my wildest imagination I can’t think of anyone paying that kind of money for one. Has it got a special rare ingredient?

No, but I recently reviewed one that cost $126. Both smelled amazing, but I couldn’t bring myself to spend that much money on a candle even if I had the money.

@AmbiePam No, that's just too much.

I would count off for the ripped box. They want your honest opinion and the delivery is part of it. I'm glad the candle smells great! But that doesn't fix the box.

I did end up counting off a star due to the box and then realizing as heavenly as the candle smelled, the scent wasn’t exactly permeating the room. So all that combined caused me to give it a four. I hated to do it, but that’s what it deserved everything considered.

@AmbiePam Had you paid for the candle and sent it as a gift, somebody might have been disappointed with the torn box. (I wouldn't have worried about it, but some people do.)

I would say 5 stars and maybe mention the box as a side issue. Better the candle be impressive and the box be ripped than vice versa.

Maybe mention that the box was damaged. I can understand people wouldn't be pleased to get a damaged article even if it is only the box.

It really was a big detraction since the box that contained the candle was so fancy.

@AmbiePam In that case the box almost becomes part of the gift.

I would mention the box as an aside. Who knows why it's ripped? Did the product come direct from the manufacturer or from a 3rd party?

110 dollar candle?? geez, for that money I would expect it to light and extinguish itself and maybe carry itself from room to room...crazy!

I reviewed one earlier this year that cost $126. At least it was a big candle. And I have to say, it was an exceptional one. This candle though is a lot smaller than that one.

I would give it 5 if you really liked it. The review is supposed to be about the candle, not the box, right?

It would have ruined the presentation had it been given as a gift, but since it wasn’t, it’s not a huge deal.

If the review is for the product, I would give the 5 starts, may be I would mention that the box was ripped, people expect to receive a perfect product for that price.

I did. And I gave it four stars because besides the box, I noticed the fragrance really didn’t travel very far into the room once the candle was lit. Those two things combined took off some of the shine. Because that box was meant to look really nice, and the rip was bad.

I guess if the product itself is ok and you're not using the box for storing if your otherwise satisfied I'd give it 5 strars/

I can’t imagine spending that much money on one item. It makes little sense to me.

The box could have damaged at the courier so may not entirely be the fault of the seller. I would just mention it but rate only the product itself. Edited to add: Saw the others mentioning the high price. Perhaps that is the one that could affect the rating. Perhaps a point off (or half a point, if that's possible) for it being a bit too pricey.
