A mouse brings down a major supermarket

The photo is of a guinea pig, not a mouse. I heard a story today that I found amusing. The country town where we both grew up has two major grocery stores, Coles and IGA. A few months back, a naughty mouse chewed through a cable and brought Coles to a complete standstill. The tills wouldn’t work; there was no lighting, and power in the freezer and fridge units failed resulting in the loss of hundreds of items. Word spread quickly and by the end of the day, IGA had completely sold out of everything. And all because of the power of a little mouse! I wonder if he knew what power he had.

@JudyEv I had one chew through the wire to the bathroom plug. Tried to use my hair dryer and nothing happened. When I pulled it apart the little thing had fried itself

They are very destructive and carry a lot of diseases. I finally had to call Terminix and pay big bucks to have them trap, etc. They seem to be staying down the basement now. Knock on wood.

We had them in some of our older houses but it's hard for them to get into the newer houses.

@JudyEv I had cousin #2 put copper wool around the door in the basement. The tech said that's where they were coming in. We shall see.

Not to mention how they stop women in their tracks. Can you imagine how much money that cost to repair? I had to have the wiring in my car repaired because the annual checkup I do at the dealership found evidence that they’d been nibbling at the wires. They fixed it AND put some deterrent on the car wires. Makes me think that feeding the neighborhood cats is an investment!!!

@JudyEv — hope the cats remember not to attack the main rodent (Mickey).

Apparently at Disneyland there are dozens of feral cats which are fed and looked after and in return they keep the rodents down.

That was a powerful little mouse! In the summertime here, sometimes mice or a squirrel will wiggle it's way into a transformer station, and chew a wire in half, resulting in a massive power outage--sometimes, for hours. It's hard to keep those little devils out of mischief!

It's amazing how just one broken wire can shut down a huge supermarket.

@JudyEv They are extremely destructive. A friend of my daughter bought a brand new car. She went to visit another friend who lived rather rurally, and parked in her driveway all evening until the next day. When she got in her car to go home, she discovered that somehow mice had gotten in it (windows were up, doors were locked) and completely chewed a massive hole in the passenger front seat. Mice are terribly destructive!

IGA really lucked out! I remember when IGA was everywhere here (I assume they are the same chain as those here). It’s kind of crazy that a little creature can cause so much havoc.

Let's see... you used a photo of a guinea pig because when you tried searching for a pic of a mouse all you got was pictures of computer mice?

We don't have martens or polecats here. I can't think of any animals that would attack the cables in a car.

@JudyEv I heard something under my trailer last night so got the pellets out again. They hate peppermint and some other oils. Our local hardware store sells the pellets. I need to stock up. We have to check under our hoods often too.

The might of a tiny mouse . Very interesting! Coles need to go for a good pest control, so do others in the neighborhood. Little mouse gers the headlines

This is slightly amusing but more of a frightening prospect. I think cables in such a case should have extra protection. Else such a scenario could repeat elsewhere as well !

@JudyEv So preventing these things could mean going in for some extra safety/prevention methods. May be using some chemicals/repellents.

I know at one school where Vince worked, the possums chewed the electrical cables in the ceiling. It could have electrocuted the whole place.

It certainly would not be amusing to Cole's, nor to me either, if it happened to me. It is sort of amusing how the people panicked right away, and bought out all of the products from IGA. They must have thought the mice might strike twice, and hit on IGA too. I hate destruction, and waste, and it was a shame Cole's never laid down enough bait in their stores to prevent such an avoidable loss. I hope they control the mice in the future. Perhaps, such important cables should be protected by being inserted into casing tubing, as I have heard it done elsewhere, if the mice cannot be fully controlled.

I presume it was an electrical cable but maybe it was another sort of cable. And maybe, as BarBaraPrz says, it was electrocuted.
