I thought I would outsmart my husband after I paid our monthly bills. I didn’t have enough money in our checking account by a long shot to pay the statement from my shopping spree in Boston.
So, when he told me he was going out to check the mail, I walked out the door and down the driveway to our mailbox with him. As soon as he got the mail, I told him that he needed to transfer money from our savings account to the checking account. That’s his job.
He asked me how much, and went ballistic when I told him. My plan didn’t work. I thought if I told him outside where neighbors could hear, he wouldn’t yell so loud. Boy was I wrong!
As soon as we got inside, I heard him making the transfer. Not another word was said, but I was so embarrassed and mortified.
Photo is of my zinnia that I grew from seed.

I'm sorry to hear how it went, however with time I do think he will appreciate you being honest rather than hiding it somehow.

Honesty is key and it's good she opened up about it earlier enough

I love that flower and the color. I let my husband make all the monetary decisions because we never had too much, When I said I wanted something that we could not really afford, he took his wallet and handed it to me and said you want to take over?" and I always apologized and said I would go by his wishes. However, there were times when he would surprise me by saying I could buy something I really wanted. Here is the last bunch of daffodils he tole me to pick ou on our last Easter together.

Thank you. Zinnias come in so many bright and beautiful colors.
I am sure all households vary in how they handle income. Before we were married, we decided to have joint savings and checking accounts. I never spent what we couldn’t afford in all our years of marriage.
I’m sure Martin knew what was best, including those beautiful daffodils. So happy you have that photo.

@DianneN That reminds me of the time when my school progress reports had to be signed by my father.
I used to leave it on his study table just before my bed time.
My father used to tell me do better next time - so all's well that ends well in the end though I felt guilty in not getting good grades most of the time.

Shopping has never really been my thing. There is a huge difference between want and needs here, and right now, it's about needs. I am sorry it caused some dissention between you and the husband. Maybe you could agree on an amount? I don't know the answers, of course. Everyone's situations are different, for sure.

@DianneN No, I am not offended at all! . I'm just not a shopper. I do love to go to auctions, resale shops, to repurpose things, and make things. I realize I am not like a lot of people, most women love to shop.

Thanks so much. I’ve been trying gardening since Covid.
