Oh, Yeah, I Forgot to Tell You...

... about our last appointment with the ophthalmologist. I kept telling Pretty that he just wanted to do surgery on my eyelids but she kept telling me I was wrong and he wanted what was best for me. At this last appointment, they did tests to see if my eyelids were part of the problem. He kept saying they had a lot of sag in them that was blocking my vision. I kept insisting that they were only a problem when they swelled up and looked like water balloons covering my eyes. After the testing, he admitted they weren't bad enough for Medicaid to pay for surgery and wanted to know if we'd be willing to pay for the surgery ourselves. I told him I didn't have any income and we couldn't pay for it. Then he said they might be able to do the surgery and we could pay it off in monthly installments... I told him I didn't want anyone close to my eyes with a scalpel... Then he got frosty with us. Pretty asked him if he'd sign papers saying I needed disability and he said that wasn't his job. I didn't tell Pretty I told her so but that's how I've felt ever since we left his office. The vision tests he keeps doing every visit show that I'm almost totally blind in my left eye and have serious vision problems in my right eye. (Pretty said the nurse told her I was legally blind by their tests.) But I still don't qualify for disability???

The surgery may make you extra handsome, but I can’t fathom why you can’t get on disability? Your poor eyesight should definitely be a qualification.

I was afraid it would make my eyes seem to bulge and I don't want to look weird. (I'm scared of anything sharp around my eyes. I NEED them too much to let anyone damage them further.) We've been applying for around 5 years now and they always say they need more information from doctors before they'll let me have it. It doesn't make sense.

@DianneN I still don't want a scalpel around my eyes. I'm ready to apply for Social Security. I'm old enough for early retirement but Pretty thinks they won't give me disability if I get Social Security. It looks like I'm never going to get disability.

@DaddyEvil I understand, however, I have had 3 of those surgeries. I ooze extra skin. The guy and his wife who take care of our place here when we’re up north both had free eye surgeries and pointed that out when we came down. They do have other medical issues - him with pancreatic cancer which was caught early enough to remove the cancerous part. His wife has lower back pain or something like that. It makes me wonder how you, with all your medical issues, can’t receive disability insurance. Something is not right.

That guy really wanted your money, didn’t he. I cannot fathom them not having you on disability already. It’s ridiculous.

I kept telling Pretty they just wanted to do surgery on me. I genuinely don't know what to do now.

@DaddyEvil If I feel sick about this, I cannot fathom how you are feeling. Would a second opinion by an ophthalmologist perhaps lead to a different answer to getting them to recommend disability at least?

@AmbiePam I honestly don't know. Pretty said she wanted to talk to our regular doctor and see what she recommended. We see her in a couple more days.

This doctor sounds one of those who only pushes to do some kind of surgery to put more money in his pockets. Of course he is the one who should sign for disability. This is insane.

All of my specialists have said the same thing. It's not their responsibility. And yet, other people get disability all the time. I don't understand why I can't get it.

@DaddyEvil - This is really weird, I know people with less problems than you have and they get disability.

Something is seriously messed up about that. If you are legally blind, you should qualify for SSD. You should also qualify for medicaid. Makes no sense.

Missouri has Medicaid now and we do qualify for it. They only voted Medicaid in a few years ago, though. The doctor said this morning that she'd refer me to another ophthalmologist.

@just4him Me, too, for both. I got a call from the local hospital about the MRI. They've scheduled me in to get that done on the 23rd of this month.

i've witnessed things changing in person's behaviour when you say no to them and especially when you say no to paying but, in your case, there is no right justification and i'm sorry he behaved like this.

The money doesn't belong to the doctor. I've paid taxes all my working life so I am entitled to receive money when I can't work anymore. Thank you.

Yup! I don't know why, either. Pretty says he isn't a surgeon. Maybe he gets kickbacks from getting people to have unnecessary surgeries?

If it involves being declared as legally blind, I guess it will be considered a form of disability. Maybe you just go to the proper authority to apply for disability so that you can have the necessary card or papers to prove the disability.

It won't but thank you anyway. My eyelids don't droop unless they're filled with lymphatic fluid and no amount of "exercising" them will make them strong enough to lift when they're balloons full of water.

Medical costs are tough to bear when we are retired. Most countries have limited insurance coverage for their people. I do hope you get qualified as this is a clear case that requires medical intervention ASAP.

Medicaid is good insurance and most doctors here take it. The surgery just won't help. It's not medically necessary... I think this doctor gets kickbacks from having patients get unnecessary surgeries. He's been pushing for eyelid surgery since we met him. Thank you. We'll talk with our regular doctor on the 3rd and see what she thinks.

We don't understand either. They always tell us that without a doctor signing off that my vision is that bad, I don't qualify.
