Crawdads are crayfish. They are prolific from April, May, and June and are very popular in areas along rivers, fresh water, streams, and lakes. It just so happens that they are extremely popular in New Orleans where she’s going to college. One week ago, my granddaughter taught me the proper way to eat them. I’ve had them before in New Orleans, but didn’t realize how to eat them. The tail is bent backwards and pushed into the cavity and the meat comes right out, ready to dunk in butter. They taste like lobster, but I always have my lobster cracked for me by the waiter or hubs. As an aside, hubs and I found out that our granddaughter always, according to her parents, orders two entrees. The Crawdads were an entree. Hubs and I each had one. She also ordered a shrimp and pasta dish which came with a salad. We found this out every time we went out for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We went out for ice cream twice. Double scoops. What I want to know is where she puts puts all that food and still stays so slim!

Mine, too! I weigh 10 pounds more than her and she’s about 2 inches taller. I go by the 5 pounds per inch rule. Very sad state of affairs now.

When you are young, you can do things like that I think. Plus I guess she has a fast metabolism. I am surprised she didn't want to go to one of the Disney parks, or Universal Studios.Maybe her parents told her it would be too much for you guys or something.

Yes, it’s called youth, which I don’t have on my side anymore. She’s been to Disney World and Disneyland twice and we are hours south of Orlando. She loves shopping like her grandmas.lol

Can't eat them because of allergies, but glad you got your culinary education on how to eat them.

I remember being asked by my younger bro like that and I jokingly answered, The first scoop I have eaten directly goes to my feet. Everything I ate is properly distributed in every part of my body and didn't just stay in my stomach.

Poeple asked me the same. I eat a lot like everything in big portions but I never get fat. Even until now that I've aged, it's still the same. Gaining weight has always been a struggle. It's my metabolism and it's probably the same for her. Crayfish is gaining popularity here nowadays.

I had them in New Orleans and they showed us how to correctly eat them. IKEA every year host a crayfish festival at the end of June. We used to go, they also had smoked salmon and marinated herrings. It was nice to go there.

Crayfish are very tasty! They are not at all commonly available on menus here, sadly. The irony is that we have a problem in this country with invasive American signal crayfish, which outcompete the native white-clawed crayfish and also cause problems burrowing into river banks and causing them to collapse, so the obvious answer would be to eat them. In fact I should write about that!

It's funny how many variations of the name there are - crayfish, crawfish, crawdads, and my dad used to call them "crawdabbers". When I waded in the creek, I would turn up rocks to see if there were any hiding underneath and squeal if they darted out! I believe in New Orleans they are also affectionately called "mudbugs".
