Crawdads are crayfish. They are prolific from April, May, and June and are very popular in areas along rivers, fresh water, streams, and lakes. It just so happens that they are extremely popular in New Orleans where she’s going to college.
One week ago, my granddaughter taught me the proper way to eat them. I’ve had them before in New Orleans, but didn’t realize how to eat them. The tail is bent backwards and pushed into the cavity and the meat comes right out, ready to dunk in butter. They taste like lobster, but I always have my lobster cracked for me by the waiter or hubs.
As an aside, hubs and I found out that our granddaughter always, according to her parents, orders two entrees. The Crawdads were an entree. Hubs and I each had one. She also ordered a shrimp and pasta dish which came with a salad. We found this out every time we went out for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We went out for ice cream twice. Double scoops.
What I want to know is where she puts puts all that food and still stays so slim!

Poeple asked me the same. I eat a lot like everything in big portions but I never get fat. Even until now that I've aged, it's still the same.
Gaining weight has always been a struggle. It's my metabolism and it's probably the same for her.
Crayfish is gaining popularity here nowadays.

I’ve never had a weight problem until I hit menopause, but my doctor told me that people my age would kill to be my weight. I just feel better being thinner by 10 pounds.
She has youth on her side and is very active in sports. Much more so than me.
I heard that crayfish are pretty popular all over the world now. Delicious, but too much work for me

@toniganzon I still play pickle ball, tennis, and golf once in a blue moon. I lost interest in it recently. I also do yoga once a week. They keep me fit, flexible, and are so much fun.

When you are young, you can do things like that I think. Plus I guess she has a fast metabolism. I am surprised she didn't want to go to one of the Disney parks, or Universal Studios.Maybe her parents told her it would be too much for you guys or something.

Can't eat them because of allergies, but glad you got your culinary education on how to eat them.

@DianneN — I’m always happy to find people who can eat what I can’t eat or don’t like. There’s so much of a particular thing that “must” be consumed, so I’m glad to let you eat my portion. You drink my martini allotment, too.

That is a lot of food for one person. Did she eat part of it at the restaurant and take the rest home in a to go box for later?

She ate the crawdads, the salad, and most of her pasta and shrimp. Hubs and I each had one crawdad. She did have the rest of her pasta boxed up, but never touched it when we got home after going out for ice cream. At home, she ate a large bowl of raspberries and blueberries, which she had every single day. Oh, and Caramel M&Ms which be bought just for her. Those were a family joke.
How’s your little grandbaby doing? You need to write a post!

It's funny how many variations of the name there are - crayfish, crawfish, crawdads, and my dad used to call them "crawdabbers". When I waded in the creek, I would turn up rocks to see if there were any hiding underneath and squeal if they darted out! I believe in New Orleans they are also affectionately called "mudbugs".

@DianneN Yeah, you have to be careful or they can give you a good pinch, especially when you're a kid and you have little fingers, lol

She sounds like my two sons in their teen years. They could eat massive amounts of food, and they were so, so skinny.
We have crayfish, and in Illinois they are called Crawdads or Crawdaddies, too. And people do eat them, but not like they used to. You are right, they do taste like lobster.

I think it’s called youth and being on the go all the time. My father was so skinny his entire life. He was sent to a fat camp as a kid to make him gain weight. He didn’t.
So happy to hear you have had them and agree. They are also called mudbugs. Sounds disgusting, but they are delicious.

@MarieCoyle I would think so, too. Some things shouldn’t be overcooked for that very reason.

One of my friends thinks that the best gumbo has crawdads in it. She goes to great lengths to get some, has an uncle who hunts them down for her to have them fresh. It's good, but honestly I think it makes them sort of rubbery to put them in gumbo. I think they taste overcooked that way.

I vaguely remember being skinny. She is so busy and active. I have known others like that, that could, for instance eat their way through a state fair without batting an eyelash.

Young people usually burn off fat with all the energy they have. I was slim myself; between school, parties, and gong out dancing, I could eat plated of pasta just to renew my energy but not put on pounds.

i'm also sometimes wondering that about slim people; maybe they have 2 tummies or something
