Should dogs be allowed to lick babies' faces?

I know times have changed a lot since I was a youngster, but I was taught not to let dogs lick my face. I guess it was for hygienic reasons, yet I see dozens of video clips of dogs licking faces, sometimes of quite young babies. I don’t like dogs licking me now but that’s just me. I have noticed that Jensen doesn’t lick which I appreciate. Maybe it’s because he spent his early years as a racing greyhound and didn’t have much to do with anyone other than his trainer. What do you think about dogs licking faces? Here’s another photo of Jensen.

Dogs should not be allowed to lick the faces of babies. I am a germaphobe and even after getting my hand licked by my granddoggie, I immediately wash my hands.

@JudyEv Personally, I find it disgusting, but don’t tell anyone I said that.. It doesn’t mean I don’t love animals and I know you do, too.

@DianneN I'm glad you agree with me. You have to be so careful nowadays with what you say.

Well, a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s mouth. They did an experiment on that science show, Mythbusters. Of course, humans aren’t licking the faces of other humans, but they do kiss. I prefer only the dogs I know lick my hand or my arm. I know it is a friendly and/or comforting gesture, and add to that I just love dogs. I wouldn’t care if a dog licked my child, just not on the mouth. I give my dog Greenies…they do a stellar job of cleaning a dog’s mouth.

@JudyEv When it’s my dog, I don’t think much of it. But a stranger’s dog? I don’t know their habits. I don’t know what they eat. I don’t let a stranger’s dog lick my face. My dog, Sadie, doesn’t lick anyone’s face, not even mine. My previous dog, Annabelle, would only lick my ear.

That's good to know but I'd still find it difficult to be licked on the face.

It makes me cringe each time I see someone letting a dog lick their face. I don't like it at all. Jensen is a cute dog.

@JudyEv .......That's good. My mom used to have a little terrier who would lick her face for several minutes. I would have to leave the room or look away.

I love it, its just a pack thing to show appreciation. Dogs actually have enzymes that make their tongues rather clean. I looked it up to make sure. AI said this. "Dogs have enzymes in their saliva that help break down bacteria, which contributes to their ability to keep their mouths relatively clean compared to other animal, it is true, there is different bacteria that harmful to a human and not a dog. So you have to be careful there. They can lick babies faces, just not on the mouth and you can clean it since their immune system is compromised at that age. I never had a problem from a dog giving to many kisses and sometime you know let it clean the wound since it is true their saliva kills a lot of harmful germs and bacteria, but that is more of a enter at your own risk and maybe desperate scenario. I just always felt they knew what to do when I had a wound as a youngster and still here, so guess it worked.

Fair enough but licking isn't for me. I'm sure dogs think they're doing you a good turn.

@crossbones27, On your search engine board kindly input: Fact check: “Dogs have enzymes in their saliva that help break down bacteria, which contributes to THEIR ABILITY TO KEEP THEIR MOUTHS RELATIVELY CLEAN COMPARED TO OTHER ANIMAL[s], it is true, there is different bacteria that harmful to a human and not a dog. So you have to be careful there.”

My ponies would lick my hands. I think they liked any salt or remnants of carrots. Cats have quite a raspy tongue, don't they?

@Ronrybs To get calves to drink from a bucket you’d give them two fingers to suck then try to ease their heads down into the bucket. Their tongues were very raspy.

I don't think it's a good hygiene, dogs shouldnt be allowed to lick you because dog have bacteria in their mouths, they can cause diseases in humans like clostridium. I don't allow my kids play with our dog or allow Benny lick them, it really harmful.

@JudyEv, Dogs lick for various reasons including to show respect, affection, submission, as well as dominance. As regards, excessive licking, the veterinary doctor should be consulted.

Until I got Roscoe I never had dogs that licked, I try to understand that it's a canine way to show affection but it is irritating.

I think that dogs should not be allowed to lick babies faces and I do not like that they lick my face either. I am fine with my hands, that I rush to wash immediately after they did. I know there is the myth that dogs mouth is cleaner than humans mouth, but it's just a myth, the kind of bacteria are different. The bacteria in a dog's mouth can pose health risks to humans.

An expert will advise, not to allow the dog to lick the baby’s face due to pathogenic microorganisms and weaker immune system.

In developed countries there are strict protocols about upkeep of pets. But in many countries, nothing like that exists and even rabies are not uncommon. So better to play it safe and maintain a safe distance.
