A Gate to Nowhere

I just had a conversation with @Sallypup about fences and gardening. Our 2+ acre lot at our home in Connecticut is too large for a fence for my cheapo husband to have put up to keep the wildlife at bay. So, I do what I can. I always wanted a garden gate, so about 2 years ago, hubs helped me put this one in. I enhanced it with 2 lampposts with solar lighting. It does look pretty at night. I usually just walk into my flower garden from wherever I am in the yard. No gate needed. Any suggestions of what else I can put into my garden?

I would have to be there and see it up close and personal before I suggested anything Do you have a seating area in the garden, with a nice table, where one can partake of a nice cool beverage on a warm sunny day

I wish you could come and help with suggestions. I do have two benches, but my patio is more conducive to nice cool beverages and food.

That’s so pretty and makes a grand entrance! I’ll try to put up my only arch.

Your little gate looks great. We had a hot tub in our garden. I was against, but my husband insisted, we only used it a few months every year.

Thank you! It adds a bit of character to my garden. I never knew you had a hot tub.

I just plant sunflowers, green beans, and corn. But the wee beasties may devour them.

I spray almost every day with deer repellent. My vegetable garden it fully fenced in including the roof. It’s a raised bed garden.

@DianneN My garden in Orinda (more rural and hilly) never survived. I did not adequately fence it in.Here in Pleasant Hill, my balcony garden does OK.

It looks like a very tranquil spot! Do you have canna lilies? You might try those, if you don't. We used to have some in a melon color. It was so lovely and tropical-looking!

It’s as tranquil as can be. Since that photo, we have had about 9 trees removed. Well, I had them removed. Hubs wanted nothing to do with that. Some were diseased and the others blocked the sunlight from my flowers. Perhaps now I can try growing canna lilies. I always loved them!

@DianneN they do fine up here in NC, so they should be super easy in Florida. We also used to have a flower called a Brazilian daffodil (I think my husband got it from Wayside Gardens). It didn't look very much like a daffodil, but it was lovely, and it smelled just like nutmeg!

I remember in one of our homes I had a fenced garden but we hired a landscape artist for doing everything coz I was too buy at that time. Unfortunately, we sold the house coz it was just too far and traffic was getting congested. It was a good decision we did.

This became my little garden, which is growing and becoming a full time hobby for me. When we had our land renovated, we gave away and had some of the greenery that our landscape artist designed for us. We hired a new landscape artist for the rest of our property., but only had walls put in and no fences. They built me a raised bed vegetable garden that is entirely fenced in including the roof.

The gate looks great. If you keep adding gates you can trick him into fencing it

Your garden is lovely. I really enjoyed our garden chat. I bothered my husband until he put together an arch over our brick walkway. It's rectangular and classical.

Thanks so much and so did I! I believe I see your brick pathway beneath your archway. Very nice job and not only practical, but quite lovely. Years ago we had our landscaper put in a bluestone pathway. It led to nowhere, too, but now begins under my white arch and connects to our new patio. I have such grand visions, but have to fight hubs every step of the way. He’s beginning to see the light some of the time.

One property we moved to had a small gate but no fencing either side of it. For some reason I found it amusing to walk through it.

Your garden looks well endowed with a variety of plants and flowers. Whatever is added should blend in with what is already in place.

Your gate looks good.. Maybe you can put up a fountain in your garden, where the birds can drink water.

Thanks so much. I have two fountains and now only one birdbath. I’m planning on getting another fountain when I return up north. The birds love my fountains too much

Thanks. We have a lot of warm solar lighting around my garden and in front of the house, which is good when we are in Florida. I also have a dusk to dawn light by our garage which is helpful. Yes, we’ve had a sundial for years, which hubs actually thought of himself.

Thank you. Yes, we also have deer, coyotes, red foxes, rabbits, bobcats, and anything else that comes out of the woods. I spray repellent to keep them away from my flower garden.
