Finding Out Something You Were Eating and Thought Was Healthy and it turns out IT ISN'T

My daughter and I both love ice cream but it's loaded with calories, fat, etc so we searched for an alternative to have as our evening snack. She found these Keto Salted Caramel Almond ice cream bars that were less calories than regular bars and had no sugar. Since she has to watch her sugar we thought these would be perfect. I know I mentioned that she was meeting with a nutritionist and one thing the nutritionist told her was to stop eating these Keto bars. She said they might look heathy but have too much saturated fat (from coconut oil) which will raise bad cholesterol and triglycerides. We were both eating one almost every night as our after dinner snack. So, when the nutritionist told her to stop eating these or at best only have them once in awhile my daughter was mad. I have to say these ice cream bars taste good and certainly what we thought was a good alternative. I recently had my bloodwork done and my cholesterol was a bit higher than last time I had it done but the doctor didn't think it went up enough to be concerned. Here's the kicker....my daughters bloodwork came back with higher cholesterol too. We can both only assume it's the Keto bars that made the spike in our bloodwork and that the nutritionist wasn't really off base when she said they weren't healthy. Makes me wonder how many other things I assume are healthy choices really aren't.

It really is tricky to know sometimes. I am glad she clued you in about them though; no sugar would have appealed to me too.

I found out she had diabetes when she did. She was a mess for a bit, that's why I made her 'ice cream'

I prefer the real sugar ice cream. At least I KNOW I'm doing something bad when I eat it. And yes, I only eat some once in a while. (We do finish off a carton but then don't buy more for a couple of months so the temptation isn't there. Or, I buy ice cream cones (I like the ones with chocolate and nuts on them.) and just eat one of those in a week for an after supper snack. Anything that says "diet" on it probably isn't really. The company that made it is just trying to fool people into buying into the "eat healthy" craze. Did you know that even "diet soda" can contribute to making you fat? That came out in a study a few years ago. Pretty doesn't care and drinks diet soda all the time. You might like reading this article:

@Marilynda1225 How about the bit where it said one of the artificial sugars blocks the part of your brain that tell you when you're full? Nice, huh? You're very welcome.

I am glad you guys found this out. Often when they take things out to make things healthy what they put in messes the health content up a lot.

We started paying more attention and finding things we thought we healthy might not be as healthy as we thought.

to me, when I see 'ingredients' which aren't food but chemicals, I don't buy. I just eat real stuff

In my opinion it's that coconut oil that's not healthy, lucky for me I can't stand the taste of that stuff.

I made my own coconut oil. Just grated coconut squeezed in water, boiled, let sit. The top makes a custard kids love and the rest is 100% coconut oil. We've used it since early days. I don't go near 'vegetable' oil. The only other oil I use is virgin Olive oil.

I often buy frozen yogurt, it has a lot less calories than an ice cream (at least what I buy here) and it's delicious. I know that everything "keto" is full of fat and not at all healthy. Of course your high cholesterol is because all the fat contained in Keto bars.

@Marilynda1225 - I also buy often gelato, the Italian ice cream. A lot less fat and with less calories than the American ice cream.

I try to stick to the old time stuff and don't worry about the sugar in it. Many of these new so called heathy foods are worse for us and only produced because people keep looking for quick fixes. If you want to cut calories eat half of a treat compared to what you would normally eat. You still get the treat and less sugar.

I agree with you. I tend to eat what my ancestors ate. In my country we have a fantastically high rate of diabetes. In the 1970s we didn't know the word. That is because we used to eat rice only 1x a week. Our starch was 'food' as we called it.... yam, banana, cassava, breadfruit, etc.Now people eat it every day. many 2x a day.

Probably more things than you think, granola bars sound healthy but most of them aren't with too much sugar and fat. Friend is really good at reading labels especially in regard to sugar so I have found some things out from him. Also, I try to look at the carbs..so easy to get carried away with those and not even know it.

You almost need a degree these days to figure out labels. Between carbs, sugar, fat, sodium and calories you don't know how much of any is a good balance

OH yes that's why I really don't buy those that came in packages that says they're healthier. Sometimes it's just marketing.

That’s actually a really common trap. ‘Keto or low sugar doesn’t always mean heart-healthy. Glad you both caught it early though

Guess it's just easy to assume that if it says Keto it's healthy.

It’s a good thing you found that out from the nutritionalist. It’s very important to know what is in your food and to know what it means. I’m a label reader, but sometimes have things I know I shouldn’t have. Everything in moderation.

I agree that everything in moderation and thought I was a good label reader and knew quite a bit about nutrition but it seems I wasn't as smart as I thought I was Maybe I should give up ice cream and switch to martinis?

It's a minefield out there when it comes to nutrition. I think your daughter is very wise to have consulted one. Surely now you'll got the correct information.

I go for moderation and once in a while I like to eat to my heart’s content whatever I forgo otherwise. I find the lab readings vary too. My markers are generally within range.

As long as you don't have any significant health issues to deal with I agree that it's okay to splurge occasionally and the rest of the time moderation.

Does it mean that Keto bars are not healthy.? I have no idea if it is healthy or not. I have not tried keto bar yet.

This is Keto ice cream bar and it has a lot of saturated fat in it so it really isn't a good choice for us. But I think there might be other Keto bars/items available that are healthy choices.

My best friend was diagnosed with diabetes. We used to eat ice cream.. now she can't. So... I took a banana, mashed it... stirred it, and put it in the freezer. It has the consistansy of ice cream. Tastes like ice cream... but it is just a plain banana

@Marilynda1225 I felt so bad for her... but it was so easy to freeze the banana, then crush, stir it, back in and you'd swear it was icecream.

It is so interesting how certain things react in our bodies and the cholesterol can't help to be high if we get any amount of enjoyment out of what we eat. I think the smart rule is everything in moderation. I love to eat and hate to deprive myself of much. Heehee. I'm so bad.

You definitely have to check labels before you start eating something new. I hope you can find a good alternative. I wonder if frozen yogurt is any better?
