My son asked for something nostalgic today.

When my son was young, for a time his great-grandparents lived next door to us. We planned it that way, so that they would have our help, but for some time they helped us, too. Son was very close to his great-grandfather, and the apple of great-grandma's eye, too--he was the only great grandson for many years. He ate a lot of lunches with them after they retired, and they were the best cooks, ever. Homemade everything, fresh vegetables out of the garden, delicious pies...they did it all and they did it well. One of the old-time dishes they made sometimes was sort of a depression-era dish--macaroni and tomatoes. Never heard of it? They made it back then when times were tough. It consisted of chopped, home canned tomatoes, cooked macaroni of any type or shape, salt, pepper, and a spoonful of sugar. Sugar? Yes, sugar. If they had bacon drippings, a spoonful of that went into the pot. People who make in now, often jazz it up a lot more than they were able to during the depression. Now there are recipes to add meats, cooked bacon, onions, etc. And of course, so many people also toss cheese on everything now, too. But son just wanted it ''how Grandma Lucy fixed it!'' so that's what I made. I left out the bacon drippings, we neither one wanted that. He has had a really bad week, has barely eaten anything for days...but he ate this! Two bowls full. I call it a win, he asked for it, and he ate it and had a second helping. He wondered why it went out of style and people don't really make it anymore, but palates have advanced a lot, as well as ingredients. I couldn't believe how much he enjoyed this. Go figure, he usually likes dinners that require me to do a lot more involved cooking than this! Sometimes, old school, simple things do taste really good. **I forgot to take a picture of mine, so this is from Pinterest.

That was sweet of him to recall that dish and sweet of you to make it. I love to eat yellow delicious apples, peeled and sliced, just the way my Gramma used to give them to me when I was young.

One of my favorites was the homemade coffee cake both grandmothers made--they were a bit different, but not a lot. All full of cinnamon with a brown sugar crunchy topping, served warm..oh, so good! Like the macaroni dish, and your apples...they were simple treats, made with love in a simpler time. I still love them and I know you do, too.

We grew up eating macaroni with tomato sauce (plus butter, salt, and pepper). Still a favorite.

I know many made it with tomato sauce and others with regular chopped tomatoes. Either way, simple and yummy. Some simple dishes are just good food!

He has been having some new symptoms and also been nauseous, so he hasn't been eating much.

We call that shape of pasta "cavatappi" in Italy, as the shape is the one of the corkskewer, maccheroni are a lot larger, let's say maccheroni are like large penne with straight ends. So sweet from your son to ask that dish.

@MarieCoyle - My husband also loves sentimental dishes, I made a Mediterranean chicken last evening, his Mom used to make it for him.

The pasta I used looked like this and it was the same shape, but a bit smaller. I forget what name they gave it on the box. Son loves penne pasta for a lot of dishes. Of my four kids, this son and his older sister are the two that are the most sentimental. And of course, Mom is sappy sentimental, I can't help it.

@LadyDuck Yes, men are often sentimental, and many times they don't show that side of themselves to anyone other than close family or friends.

That would have been a relief to see him eat so much and enjoy it so much. Simple is often best.

It's not been the best week for him, I was just glad he thought of something that sounded good to him. You are right, many times, simple is the best.

I’ve had macaroni and tomatoes, way back in the day. How sweet to have such good memories, and that you got to spend so much time with them back then.

Just now
Glad your son was happy with that simple dish. Looks so good and we used to eat simple dishes like that too. Even now I'm happy with something simple. My grandmother was a wonderful cook and she had that can of bacon grease in the refrigerator.

Many genuine Italian pasta dishes are very simple, with just a few ingredients, and this is in that style.
