No Air

I have been adamant and I am sticking to my guns. No ands, ifs or buts about it. So far, despite warmer temperatures and higher humidity... I have absolutely REFUSED to turn the air on. In addition, we haven't run heat either for a long time. Our utility bills were running in the $350-$400 a month range and that was it. I simply REFUSE to pay it. We ran space heaters and now we're running fans. It's still cheaper. It has nothing to do with whether or not we can afford it at this point. It's the principle. We'll see how long we can last. It's actually become a challenge now. It's become a little game. I'm just tired of precious money going out for stuff like this. I have to make cuts somewhere in order to maintain our strict "budget," because I also refuse to add to the "salary" we give ourselves, and everything is stretching it anymore. So, this is where the latest cut was made. For all intents and purposes...we'll sweat this one out.

I don’t know if that helps much but any room I am not in the lights are off. I am ok with the heat not being on and it being rather chilly in the house. However, I don’t like to suffer when it’s hot. How are your bills so high?

@porwest the dollar range you gave was the total for both gas and electric or was each one that much?

The gas during the winter contributed dramatically to the bill.

We have central heating in this apartment, it's not very expensive, I keep the temperature not too hot and I use space heaters. The electricity Bill is around $ 50 per month. We do not have (and do not need) AC.

$50 a month would be awesome. I haven't seen a bill like that for at least 30 years.

As long as you can take it, that's fine

i admire your persistence but I couldn't do without a/c when it's so hot.

Normally that's my stance. Never compromise comfort for cost. But we're beyond that at this point. I've run out of things to cut, and I refuse to increase our salary to make up the difference. Even though we have the money to do it.

I have central air and heating. I put my unit on auto. It hasn't been too hot yet.

It's fun to make it a challenge. I wonder how long you'll last.

We have central heat and air. I tend to keep the house a little cool in the winter, but we supplement with heated throws, and a heated mattress pad. In the summer I keep the thermostat at 74-76 and then run fans. Bob feels too cold even then. When I was younger I never used a/c until it was about 100 F outdoors. I had heat exhaustion about four years ago and now cannot tolerate heat as well. I get sick. Our total heat/cooling (gas and electric combined) averages about $175 per month. 4 bedroom 2 bath house. Needs new storm doors and windows.

Mostly all I have for the humidity and tropical heat are fans blowing on me,

Fans work pretty well positioned right, and so far the humidity has cooperated so it's not just blowing hot, wet air around. It's still off as we speak, and I hope to be able to hold out at least another week.

That definitely sounds like a tough “challenge,” but in hot and humid weather it’s worth being careful not to push it too far for health reasons.

Nuts to that. We have to toughen up. The more we weaken ourselves, the more prone we are to die if the apocalypse happens. lol

I only turn the air on when it's oppressive. The ceiling fan usually does the trick. I have had the heat on for the chilly nights. I think gas and electric run around $200 a month, budget billing.

The ac is set at 72 here. But it’s rained for two weeks straight so it’s cooled it down a little. Well until it stops raining then it’s miserable again
