Colonoscopy... Problems With the Plumbing

I spent the better part of the morning talking with the two plumbers who came to fix the sink drains. Pretty called the landlady a few days ago and told her the sinks weren't draining well so they came to figure out the problem. They sent their snake down the drain in the kitchen and worked at that for well over an hour before deciding to look at the plumbing under the house. One guy crawled under the house and came right back out. Apparently, the sinks (bathroom as well as the kitchen sinks) all combine. The problem is that the pipes under the house run through a 10 foot by 8 foot slab of concrete 3 feet thick. (That's the floor in the laundry room.) Why someone decided to make a thick slab of concrete instead of pour a normal floor and putting a step from the kitchen floor down to that level is beyond my understanding. The plumbers can't access those pipes without taking out a chunk of concrete flooring and they have to get the landlady's permission to do that. This afternoon, Pretty had a doctor appointment. The doctor examined her and decided it's time for Pretty to have her first colonoscopy... Pretty's appointment was at 2 pm but was called into the doctor's office at almost 3:30 pm... (We don't know why it took so long.) Then we had to go to Walmart to get the supplies Pretty needed for the colonoscopy prep... By the time we got home, I was exhausted since I still hadn't taken my morning or afternoon nap. I slept for 3 hours. Her colonoscopy will be the 24th and the doctor asked that I come sit in the waiting room while they do that procedure so I can bring Pretty home afterwards. The doctor didn't want her walking home afterwards even though we're only 2 1/2 blocks from the hospital. *shrug* It sounds like a fun day for me although, I might get to tease Pretty if the pain shot and sedative makes her as loopy as it did me when I had a colonoscopy.

Oh my goodness, when there is a pipe that cannot be easily inspected is all the time a problem. Good luck for that. May be the doctor does not want to let Pretty walk because of anesthesia. It's a very mild anesthesia here, they let people drive one hour after colonoscopy.

@DaddyEvil - Most plumbers do not use their brain before installing pipes and later people have plenty of problems. I have read that now there is a less invasive colonoscopy, it's Colon Capsule Endoscopy, it's now what doctors suggest in Switzerland as primary screening method. If they notice problems they can intervene later to remove polyps, if any.

@LadyDuck The colonoscopy sounded to me like the exact same thing I went through years ago

Yes, that's normally the same with pipes here. I think somebody didn't know what they were doing when they installed that plumbing. It has been years since I had my first colonoscopy and they used anesthesia on me since they were examining me and removing some polyps and then taking a a biopsy from me. I had to ask my niece to take me home afterwards.

Yes, I had to drive my dad a few times for a colonoscopy during my mom’s years with dementia. It was downright funny how focused on getting bacon he was after the doctor specifically told him no greasy foods. He has no recollection whatsoever of getting giddy over a BLT at Subway. I have to have my first colonoscopy this year too. I’m hoping I can keep the prep down.

They did remove some polyps so gave me anesthesia when I had my first colonoscopy. (I had to have some stitches when they got through with me.) I was telling jokes and funny stories when they put me out and still telling them when my niece came to take me home again. I don't remember any of that but Pretty still tells me about it.

That sounds like a very long and exhausting day! I hope the plumbing issue gets sorted soon and that everything goes smoothly with Pretty’s colonoscopy.

I will since the doctor asked me to. I hope I can see well enough to drive that day. Otherwise I'll have to ask my brother to bring both of us home.

I'm feeling terrible for your daughter. We have pesky concrete steps but nothing on the inside. How weird and a disaster waiting to happen.

We didn't realize that the pipes ran though the back porch. I bet the landlady didn't know that, either. I'm sure Pretty will be fine and the doctor is just being very careful.

This house was built sometime in the 1940s, You can tell the laundry room was an add-on at some point before we moved in here. I think somebody didn't know what they were doing when they plumbed everything together and poured that slab of concrete.

@GardenGerty At least it's not our money paying for the repairs.

So far I have been able to just use cologuard. Bob probably needs both a colonoscopy and an egd but his health will not permit either.

The doctor told us that the first time should always be a real colonoscopy to allow them to get a baseling to gauge everything against after that. I've had the colonoscopy and then Cologuard after that... They tried to get me to do another colonoscopy during the pandemic but I refused and have done Cologuard every time since then.

I am sorry for Pretty having to have the scope done, the prep is the worst. My mother used to drive my Dad home from the scopes that he's had over the years, but she always used to call me when he went in so that I could come and help her get him from the front door of the hospital into their car. That was always such a challenge as he was quite tall, her quite short and me in between.

The pipes could be worse. Our whole house is a concrete pad. Hope she does good with the colonoscopy. Remember she doesn't have to finish that crap if everything is coming out clear.

Whenever I used the kitchen sink lately, the water would fill up and then go down but very slowly. My realtor gave me a guy he used. He came to look at the sink and ended up taking some machine (perhaps it’s some kind of a snake) and putting it into the pipe that goes into the wall. That did the trick. Cost me $165. Hope your plumbing issue can be resolved. Hope all goes well with the colonoscopy.

Just now
An eventful day but it did take a toll on you. I hope it will be all clear for Pretty after the colonoscopy. I always keep my fingers crossed when I go for such tests and procedures.
