Yearly Vet Visit*

Torrington, Connecticut
July 20, 2026 8:39am CST
Want to talk about expensive? Took my dog to the Vet this weekend to get his annual Rabie's shot and 6 month of supply of his flee, tick and heart guard medicine. After an hour of wrestling my dog to get a blood sample for blood work we finally got through the whole ordeal and our bill was $576 dollars. I was expecting to spend around $300 so I brought that with me cash and still had to end up using my debt card. Glad it was all over and my dog is up to date with all his meds and shots. Above is a pic of my fur baby Taz.

I'm glad it was your puppy that needed to see the vet and not you. I only have fishies and know how to take care of them myself... I have all the meds they need and one small pack of frozen peas just in case one has a problem. Unfortunately, my big doctor visit is still coming up. I'm almost looking forward to it because the problems are getting worse.

@BACONSTRIPSXXX I've always told people that my fishies and Pretty are the only things I need to take care of and after Pretty reached her teens, I didn't really need to do very much to take care of her.

He is so cute, I think he is not looking at the camera, i think he is anticipating the vet to get him, lol! I wonder why the adults don't want to have kids, complaining because it is expensive, but raise a lot of fur babies, lol!

I go to the vaccine clinic at tractor supply for my dogs shots. I do have a couple of vets I use if needed for other things

@BACONSTRIPSXXX That is nice it's that close. My preferred vet has set hours. The second vet handles livestock and has emergency hours for all animals.

Your Taz is very cute and ready to go home. I have to take my Fred cat for an annual visit in September. If I don't, the Vet won't prescribe his heart meds. You are right on Vets draining your wallet.

Yeah same thing with me, they wouldn't give him his heart or worm guard without taking blood work and that became a whole ordeal. My dog isn't aggressive but he wanted to eat the vet alive lol

@BACONSTRIPSXXX For sure. Poor dog doesn't understand why a human would inflict pain on them. The smells in the Vet hospital must be horrendous to a dog.

Ugh, the closest vet to this area is expensive like that. I try to take my cat elsewhere if at all possible. I thought last week I might have to take him to the vet..and I was dreading it, but everything was OK. Taz says he is worth every cent!

Wow that seems like a lot for that vet visit but I've yet to find a vet bill to be less than I anticipated and it's always more. Taz is a cutie and he's probably happy to have all that done with too.

I don't have any pets. So I don't need to go to the vet..From your post I came to know for the first time that it's very costly.. And time consuming also.

Veterinary care is extremely expensive here too. And I'm not sure I believe that it is all necessary. I mean we humans generally get one vaccine against a disease, or maybe one and a booster, so it seems odd that they tell us cats and dogs should have them every year. Also I have to mention that dogs being treated with insecticides to prevent fleas and ticks are a major cause of environmental contamination, e.g. if they swim in a pond or river they release a lot of the poisonous flea treatment into the water, affecting aquatic life, and if their fur is used by nesting birds it is associated with a big reduction in the number of baby birds.

A visit to a doctor also can end up with a bigger bill than we had expected. I recall my cataract surgery few years ago. I had kept cash as a back up and it was useful as one of my credit card refused to cooperate!
