I had a mystery shop today.

This is the first one I have done in a couple of years. I could not resist, though, as it was local, and involved no purchases and the online form was really short. I was familiar with the business as well. I will make twelve dollars for about thirty minutes of work. I wish I could get more like this. Have you done any mystery shops?

Yes, but I did it before the internet had been invented, so it was a little different. But even then it paid very well. The most fun I had was pretending to buy a car. I had to drive quite a ways to the dealership, but they paid my gas and mileage and then some. It was a temp agency assignment and another time they sent me to the same car dealer to work in the office for a few days. They did not remember or recognize me, but I had a good time doing that one too. I did this sort of thing to earn money for college, but have not done it since.

Aren't you glad that was pretend? When I was working for a law firm back in my college days, they had an elderly client who was suspicious of his family and of the lawyers, but he would sign anything a young lady put in front of him. So they gave me some lines to rehearse and then took me over to his apartment to talk him into signing conservatorship papers. Ewwww, I was a little uncomfortable with that at first, but then I thought what if someone really bad went over and got him to sign something that gave away all his money instead. Clearly he needed somebody to watch over him. It was still a hard thing to do to someone.

Pretending to buy a car; that's just so cool... I could act all day too, LOL.. But seriously, never heard of such things. But you said before the internet was invented, so ahhh.... awesome yeah those days. I still understood the meaning of 8 hours of sleep back then..

Good for you!! Yes, I used to have 2 mystery shops I used to do on a regular basis for years. One was for a national chain hardware store, and the other was for a local chain of toy stores. I always enjoyed doing it and got $20 bucks for each 'shop' I did. It was sure nice getting paid for doing them, and also getting re-imbursed for all that cool merchandise I got to keep on top:) They'd always want me to ask about a certain product, in a certain department. Nobody ever knew what i was doing, they just thought I was a clueless customer because I had questions about the product and how it worked...they didn't know I was actually rating them and their responses. I don't get out and about anymore (not allowed to drive due to health reasons) or I'd still be doing them!

Hmmmm, thanks, never really thought about focus groups. The only ones I've seen on the net for around here takes a 40 min drive to the nearest big city. Will definitely have to check those out, maybe there's something closer in one of the closer smaller cities. About 2 or 3 times a year I do product testing for one company. Those projects I can still do at home. One is for women's undergarments, and the other is women's cosmetic related. I'd tell you 'who' but they make you sign a sworn to secrecy clause. Anyways, each item is sent in bulk and you test for a month and keep a diary for them. That usually pays 15 to 20 bucks for the project, but it's worth it because the merchandise you get to keep far outweighs what they pay you. Thanks again GG! Will look into those focus groups for sure:-)

Oh, almost forgot...the mystery shopping jobs I had were all through Kern. I never had a shop with them that was lower than $20 bucks, and they don't take forever to pay. They have shops to do all over US and more. Very reputable company! Here's the link: http://www.kernscheduling.com/

My mom did focus groups and tested products at home for years cause she did not get out and about. Could get a ride to a day long focus group and have lunch and enjoyed that a lot.

I would love to do something like that. The problem I have is finding the ones that aren't scams, there are so many scams out there, you don't know who to trust. My sister inquired about a mystery shopper, it was a total scam, it sounded just like the thing that happened to Hatley. Good luck to you, also make lots of money, keep me in mind if they need more mystery shoppers.

HI JENNY!!! missed you. The way it works in the US is pretty simple. You register with the legitimate sites, and get notified of shops that fit your profile. You apply for or accept them, read the background material and do the job. I had to go to a specific type of retailer and pretend a certain scenario yesterday, to see if someone would offer to help, and see if they would try to close a sale. I do not want to violate confidentiality by telling too much.

I've heard of mystery shopping for years now, but have not chanced upon one myself as in doing it. It is actually cool when we don't have to spend money to make money, and that includes mystery shopping. $12 for 30 minutes of work is not bad at all; anything extra is just so cool. Sometimes, I see some mystery shopping website, but mostly are for US members. It would be cool to find something in my area of stay. Hopefully you'll get more such assignments..

I haven't but I know someone who did. The pay wasn't great and she had to take it out of her own pocket first and was reimbursed 2 months later. Needless to say, she stopped. Sounds like you got a better deal out of the mystery shopper thing :-) That sounds nice

That is a drawback for the majority of shops. I have happened to have at least half require no purchase, though, and then the money is good, and when it comes it comes.

My friend did it for AC Nielsen. Some major department stores would hire AC to do the mystery shopper program for them. My friend stopped cold when they asked her to go to a high end mall and purchase a luxury brand handbag on her credit card and they'd reimburse her like 2 months later. She said she'd had it because she kept getting those requests. I'm happy to hear you're enjoying your experience though. Good for you :-)

The sites mentioned throughout this discussion are legitimate, and I can add a few more, like Trend Source, for one. Second to None sends me shops but I have not done any in a long time.

I have been reluctant to try this one. Having sent for information I wasn't certain whether it was legitimate or not. Do you have a referral to the one you do. I would entertain the idea again if I am sure it isn't a bogus deal.

No, I have not done any mystery shopping, but the job does sound fun. I would love to get involved in it. I love shopping, so why not get paid for it? That just sounds like an oxymoron!

There are legit. sites out there. One website that has some mystery shopping is narms.com, as well as having merchandising and in store event positions. I also was just told about jobslinger.com, but do not know how it works it is new to me. This shop was for Ritter Associates.

I've always wondered how those work. I thought they'd keep you busier than that though. Or, do they send you offers that you can do if you choose? Is there any out-of-pocket expense? Would love to hear more...

I have quit doing very many. I have offers every day, from various companies, most are a little drive away. They offer, you apply and sometimes you are chosen. Some are out of pocket, others, like today, I only went in and pretended to be shopping for something specific, but I had to see if anyone offered to help me, and if they promoted certain products and if they pushed for a sale. Food shops at restaurants are out of pocket, but you get reimbursed for it, and get a fee for entering the data.

I used to work with someone who did these from time to time, and got to travel to quite a few interesting places as well. There are times I would Love to try something like this, but have never really known where to look. Do you get to choose whether you want to do something they try and offer you?

Tina, you are never required to do one. They send notices to your email and you apply if you want to do it. If you go back in the discussion CatGods gave a great answer that will help everyone out.

Oh, I've done Secret Shopper which is much like it. I would buy a hamburger at McD's and evaluate it, the drink, and the service. I would get reimbursed for the food, drink, and a little more $ (went for gas). Then a few days later, they wanted me to go to Burger King and evaluate theirs. I got to eat at a couple fast food places for free. Your deal seems much better than mine.

You mean where you check out the business to make sure the employees are following procedure? I've never done that myself, but my husband has told me lots of stories from when he worked at LA airport and some of his employees were caught doing some shady things.

Oh cool! Ive always wanted to try Mystery Shopping. Im not fond of shopping for myself cause I just get lost in the shelves and I just end up not buying anything, that is unless I have a clear idea on what to buy. So Mystery Shopping programs give the members a definite purpose in shopping. That's just fine by me.^_^ I have looked into the programs that could be available in my area but the ones that I found have suspended accepting new recruits. Im not eligible to join yet on the other one. Still have a few months to go before I could finally apply.LOL Im still currently looking for more programs that I could possibly join.^_^

That is why I am picky about who I do it for. Sometimes if they are desperate they pump up the fee.
