I tend to try and make meals from odd items sitting around. Tonight (Saturday) was that type of dinner which I made. Here's a photo of that dinner. I used a box of Beef flavored Rice-A-Roni; about 1 1/2 pounds hanburger; some white rice; mushrooms; a can of diced tomatoes with hot peppers etc; and some chili and garlic powder. It turned out great and is so tasty. Dad even said it's good. Something he seldoms does actually, so I am happy for this meal. When was the last time you threw together a meal with odd things you've around the house etc? As always..... HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

More so when I was growing up and what he had in the refrigerator was beyond my control. I used to make barbecue ham sandwiches with leftover ham and gravy bread with leftover gravy and meat (lamb or roast beef) over bread.

Hmmm... so you're not only a creative cook, but a time-traveller, too? (My calendar says it's Friday.)

I could have eaten your meal. I love all those ingredients, especially the hot peppers, chilli and garlic. I cant remember exactly the last time I threw a meal together, but I am certainly tonight. I have some beef mince. I will see what I can add to that. Im thinking potatoes for a start.

Actually tonight I did. We had a bunch of left overs & I didn't feel like cooking so I took some extra veggies from the other night, left over rotini noodles to my left over chicken & dumplings. Sometimes those work ut better than planned meals.

*LOL* I only make dumplings if I don't feel like making egg noodles or have any storebought on hand.

About a year and three months ago when we still had our own apartment before my son lost his job and our lives were turned upside down, the odd thing is I too started with beef flavored Rice A Roni and then added some onion, tomatoes, green peppers, cooked ground beef, mushrooms, and it was so good too. not as spicy as yours but I have a touchy tummy in regard to hot peppers. Oh yes of course I also chopped some garlic in it, I used a lot of garlic when I did my own cooking.this is what I miss most being here, my own cooking. I like to cook.

I really enjoy throwing meals together as well. Last week was my latest experiment. I had a ton of leftovers n the fridge. I tend to make soups out of them. Well, this time I tried to make something other than a soup out of the stuff in the fridge, I went with a casserole. I used left over grilled chicken, buttered noodles, steamed broccoli, and a few other veggies that were in there. Tossed everything into a pan, covered it with some shredded cheese, then, baked it for about 45 minutes. Everyone truly enjoyed it. There are other times when I throw stuff together like that as well. It is a ton of fun when you can find stuff that you never thought anyone in the family would eat.

Oh wow! Your cheesy chicken noodle and veggie casserole sounds really good! I make a casserole quite regularly that has chicken, broccoli, mayo, spices, lemon juice, and grated cheese on top!My family loves it too, that's the BIG bonus!

we had chicken wraps last night for supper (using tortilla wraps) and there was enough chicken left over tonight to have a chicken goulash (with chinese noodles) it was quite tastey!

I have always been the waste not want not kind of person so I TRY my best to use up leftovers, but sometimes they get pushed to the back of the fridge and when I do notice it it is because either I'm wondering where the horrific smell is coming from or I can see it's moldy bluish/greenish goo on the side of the container *shudders*. I usually throw stuff together and either fry it or bake it in the oven and make a casserole out of it depending what it is!

It's been a long time since I have thrown together a meal.....I usually make something big and eat off it for a while...freeze part of it and have some at a later date when I don't feel like cooking.

Its the sort of meal I prefer. I get bored with meat, potatoes and veg. I love pasta as you can add all sorts of things to it. there are marinades i use as flavourings, my favourite is lemon and coriander. I love anything with tomatoes in and sometimes i buy tubes of tomato puree and use them to pep up mince or even a rice dish. only for me sadly as my husband likes 'normal ' meals , bless him. I love stir fries with very crunchy veg. I chop chinese lettuce really small , or white cabbage, onion, shredded carrot and chestnut mushroom. sometimes i add chicken or ham, as you say whatever is in the fridge.

That sounds delicious! Actually, that's how I cook. A little meat, whatever vegetables are hanging around, some spices and maybe a flavored white sauce with rice or noodles or whatever. It usually turns out much better than I think it will and it's a lot healthier than eating take out food or frozen dinners.

I just come across your recipe GrandPaBob. I have some beef flavored rice mix, it is not made by Rice_A-Roni, but I am going to try to make this recipe, I sure hope mine turn out good. I am not good at just throwing things together like that but I am home alone so if it doesn't turn out good no one will know because I am not going to tell.

That is a great idea to use up whatever you can and come up with something new and tasty. I too do it all the time. When I am alone and in no mood to go shopping , IU make do with whatever is available and I find that I am able to come up with something nice...The other day I made a salad combining beaten rice, tomatoes, some chopped mixed vegetables , orange and apple.I had that for lunch with a glass of butter milk...All the best BOB and happy mylotting

I did this tonight for dinner! I made a lovely soup from chicken stock, rice noodles and some chicken I had left from last night put into it. Then I just put a few vegetables from my garden into the soup (carrot, celery, cabbage, beans, spinach) and that was my dinner! Yummy

My sister does this thing she calls hamburger soup( I call it hamburger slop). You brown up some ground beef and then add a can of corn, a can of green beans, a can of carrots, a can of tomato sauce, sometimes a can of tomatoes, and some seasonings. It is actually pretty good.

That sounds like a pretty good meal. I can't just throw things together from scratch like that. My thrown together meals are typically really basic. Like Top Ramen and peanut butter(like noodles with peanut sauce), or top ramen and tuna fish. Nothing fancy at all. Thanks for the post, and happy mylotting Grandpa Bob.
