The Good News and the BAD News For Fox News

I've been hearing and reading, here and elsewhere, about how Fox News is once again the top rated cable news outlet, how they have all of the top rated shows in prime time on cable news. What they haven't been saying is that their viewership is declining, especially with the coveted 25-54 demo group. Compared with the ratings for the third quarter of 2009, FNC has declined 21% for the third quarter of 2010. Also troubling for Fox is that MSNBC's ratings are actually improving, including with the younger viewers. http://www.sott.net/articles/show/216726-Fox-News-Viewership-Plunges-21- Any thoughts? Annie

Fox News' numbers have decreased due to it's move to the far right. You cannot narrow your political ideology and not feel an impact. When FNC was skyrocketing they had shows like Hannity and Colmes while not having an hour long show dedicated to lunatic Glenn Beck. FNC has got itself married to the GOP, every potential GOP Presidential candidate is on the FNC payroll, and the FNC treats every world view point that isn't exactly like their world view point as if it is going to destroy America.

Fortunata would you care to inform me as to when I can turn on FNC and receive some fair and balanced news. As Annie knows I use to watch FNC regularly, but hey if I wanted to get my news from the Republican spin machine, I would just go to my state GOP headquarters.

Gewcew, I agree with you. Fortunata, with all due respect, I have no idea how anyone could claim Fox is "balanced". Even on their supposedly actual "news" shows it's all slanted to the far right. Chris and Ed are both commentators and have never tried to present themselves as anything but. Next to the word "lunatic" in the dictionary is a picture of Glenn Beck...lol! Annie

Which proves to me that you don't watch Fox news. Like bob posted, Fox is balanced. They don't take sides. Yes, they do have opinion shows, but so do the other two networks. If anybody is a lunatic, Chris Matthews is, and Ed Schultz, lol!!

..Hi annie, I would like to see them evaporate. But free speech is what it is. You also want to know what crap they are saying. I guess the next one going there would be Christine "the I'm not a witch" person. She would fit right in with the other nut cases living in denial. The Faux news channel is absolutely what they are, plain and simple. Take it easy. Thanks for the information.

Wonder where he got his facts from? But it does seem a little obsolete since ratings change all the time. Still looking at the more recent link provide, Fox is still way up in the ratings.

It was acknowledged that Fox is still way up, but they're still losing viewership which I thought was interesting. Of course ratings change all the time but this report was a direct comparison between the third quarters of 2009 and 2010. Annie

See, then he was still wrong because he failed to factor in that viewership was generally lower in 2010 than it was 2009 due to the internet.

My thoughts are....I don't watch any of that garbage! I read as much as I can from sources that do not care about who is going to benefit politically by the story. Hence, I do not read American News Sources or British Sources, they are worse.

What's amazing to me is that cable TV news channel ratings are of such interest. It has become as much of a political issue to some people as politics itself. Liberals think FNC is biased toward the right and conservatives think MSNBC is biased toward the left. Is this news? Who cares what their ratings are? If Fox was losing viewers back in October when the article was written, it certainly didn't translate to voters moving to the left. We all know how the mid-term elections turned out. By the way, just for grins, if anybody really is that interested, I checked the latest numbers and Fox is killin' it. http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2010/12/29/cable-news-ratings-for-tuesday-december-28-2010/76813

This was the last quarterly ratings report there's been. The link you provided tells the ratings for the week of December 28 when most of the anchors were off. If you want to say Fox is killin' it, fine, but they're not killin' it as much as they were last year at the same time. Annie

fox is a mouthpiece for the right wing in America....its not about giving a balanced viewpoint , its more about stoking peoples fears and prejudices....its certainly explains why Americans are some of the least informed people in the world , fox definitely ain't improving matters

The really bad thing is, what Americans are feeling and thinking can affect me here in good old South Africa, what middle , Missouri , America is thinking could mean another bogus war or more power to vested interest and in Fox they have a corporation that fuels their fears , not to mention profit of it ....but I suppose if a person watches Fox TV they have to be really stupid !

AS I said above, this is the last QUARTERLY ratings report available. I'd guess the ratings for the fourth quarter of 2010 will be available sometime this month. Annie

The only really good news would be for all tv news to suffer tragic reductions in ratings.

I'm not surprised. fox news is really just a cable version of a tabloid magazine. Of course some of their local news is accurate and of interest to those locally and then there is the weather but beyond that, it's pretty much personal opinion and entertainment. I rarely watch it and if I do catch some of it is because the tv just happened to be on that station from a previous show. I probably have caught bits of it less than a handful of times over the past 5 yrs.

I think their local news is pretty much separate from the cable news network. Our local Fox channel actually "shares" a news crew and set with our local ABC affiliate. The Fox channel has their late news at 10 and the ABC one at 11. Annie

Maybe people are finally wising up to their methods of dis- and mis-information. There's hope for us yet if people are learning to think for themselves instead of blindly following their so-called political prophets.

One can only hope! I just read another column about why Fox leads in the cable news ratings, and it seems that the writer agrees with you; some people like Fox because with them they don't have to think for themselves because they're told how to think. Annie

Well if Fox wants viewers they can start reporting more accurately. I don't think they ever know what they are talking about. MSNBC is simply better, so of course, people would rather watch it. lol I am thinking that some credit to this decline of viewers can go to the Faux News campaign.

That's funny, considering Fox is hiring most of CNN and MSNBC's reporters and anchors. Where are you getting your mis-oops, information from? Only losers watch MSNBC, as far as I know.

"Most" of CNHN and MSNBC's reporters and anchors? Examples please... I'm sorry, but I don't consider myself or any of my friends and relatives who watch MSNBC "losers" and I wouldn't call you names for liking Fox. Just saying... Annie

Any thoughts.... um... yeah couldn't care less. I'm a conservative constitutionalists because I am not stupid enough to buy the left wing liberal idiocy. That will never change regardless of what Fox News does, a channel I don't get because I find cable a worthless waste of money.

Maybe their viewership is declining because what they present is more like entertainment than news. "Anchormen" crying on TV (yes I mean Glen Beck). Name-calling, character assassination, slanted programming every time. It's unfair, and unbalanced.Whatever it is, it aint news. Unfortunately, MSNBC might be improving their ratings by turning to entertainment themselves. Both channels are becoming much more like HLN, "news and views," meaning celebrities and slime, all the time. the way to discourage these trends is to refuse to watch these channels!

I guess I am one who likes FOX News I would hardly call them a mouth piece for the GOP as I hear them criitze the Republicans actions almost as much as they critize the Democrats for their actions.

Which Republicans have you heard them criticize lately, Bob? Those who have dared to as much as talk to a Democrat much less vote with them a time or two? Those who are called "RINOs" because their views aren't to the extreme right? Their parent company has donated millions to various GOP groups so I'd say they're certainly their biggest mouthpiece. I would be interested to know if the decline is somewhat due to it not being a political season. Many people tend to drop out of the news when there is not an election coming up. This is sad because they are paying attention when politicians are telling us what they are going to do, but not paying attention to see what they are actually doing.

Actually these ratings for for the third quarter of 2010, when there certainly WAS an election coming up. Annie
