QUIT DEMANDING MORE! No high speed rail, no new welfare programs; no "cost of living" increases to workers' pay, pensions or social security. No raises for any government employee (even the elected ones). No more new weapon systems (just repair and replacement of the current ones). No new federal programs. No new hires! There is no excuse for borrowing money to cover day to day expenses. There is no reason to go into debt for non emergency programs. Giving raises, or adding new expenses right now is not only stupid, it is immoral and unethical. We have enough corruption in our government without We the People demanding more!

The problem is that there is so much to cut but no one wants THEIR program cut. I thought about it. I'm a little scared of how I'll get by if SS is cut. I'm already out of a job for the past 3 years, there just aren't any here and I know I shouldn't have bought the house but....anyway, my income keeps me fine right now. But when I "retire" it will stop and I thought oh no, not my SS!! I realized I was being just like those slimeball politicians. I'll get by somehow and if I don't at least my kids might have a chance to live decently. So now I'm okay with SS and Medicare being cut, go ahead and do it but don't ruin my children's lives. I think people, like me, are just thinking of their own future. They need to see the big picture! If we keep going like this we'll be a third world country and we're well on our way right now. Trouble is, politicians think about votes, not the country.

Can you imagine how much better your retirement would look right now if, instead of forcing you to put money into SS, the government let you put that money into an IRA or retirement fund of your choosing?

Taskr, when I was young I would not have put any money into retirement. I probably wouldn't have started till I was around 40, at which time I was a stay at home mother with a husband that didn't believe in saving money. I'd be screwed even more than I am now! But it's a better idea to allow people to have control over their IRA/retirement plans. Gov't controlling anything is NEVER a good idea! You can see how it turns out every time--Epic Fail, as Ted would say!

Yep...gotta agree with you on this one. I have been working the same stupid job for years and haven't had a raise in 4 yrs and prior to that...9. Still..raised my kids, fed us and clothed us and still here and doing fine...don't get welfare or anything either. These government people will be just fine without the raises and benefits. you can't really blame them for wanting those things. We all just have to say NO. They'll pout of course but they'll be just fine.

You know the funny thing? My wife checked the other day and we actually qualify for welfare because my job pays so low and yet we're still making all our payments and feeding ourselves and our son well. I think too many people just don't know how to budget their money and while the government isn't to blame for it, it's certainly encouraging the culture of being entitled to things you can't afford.

Hi Taskr, I think you are probably very right on this. I consolidated my credit cards with a local non-profit Debt Management program. In order to do this, I was told that I might be required to take finacial management classes through them. After going over all my fiances and spending and credit history, I did not have to take the classes. Why? Because I kept up on my bills and just wanted to get out of debt and not run into problems in the future. I think I probably qualify for all kinds of help also but i just haven't inquired. I did get a person from the welfare office call me one day to tell me that I qualified for food stamps because I'm in low income housing! thought it was kind of weird. I would have qualified for 24.00 per month if I went along with it. I didn't realize they solicited people like that. I get it that some people really do need it and I don't think they should be put through a lot of programs and what not to get it. Still others, like you said, it is a matter of budgeting, getting rid of the credit cards etc. If they just took a closer look as to why some of these people are getting assistance they might go further in helping them.

I might add cut those programs that are duplicated from one agency to another and work against each other. Clean up those programs that are wasting our money.

sadly the government still continues to waste money on studies, pay raises of fat cats and the like. it is the same here in canada. the top 5 banks make millions off of bank fees every year. it is a shame the way our countries are run.

Well, then you will be happy to hear that Florida just turned down the money for the high speed rail. Apparently, the route from Orlando to Tampa plants you in the middle of Tampa without any other transportation to get out except back on the rail line. (No real public transportation in that area.) So yeah for Florida. So far, they were the third in line of governors to turn down Federal money.

You're not kidding. I lived in Tampa. Public transportation there is almost completely nonexistent. We had people calling the library all the time asking which bus would get them closest. We had to tell them that, sadly, the nearest bus drops them off over 10 miles away.

I lived in Palm Harbor and Tarpon Springs way back 79-81. There was NO public transportation to speak of. I'm sure Tampa Bay had buses and probably other cities... but nothing outside of them. Yes, I'm glad to hear that Florida turned down the federal money. Not that I'm so against trains, or public transportation.. but I am against federal extortion of the states.

Yep the only way we are going to get out of all this debt is if we STOP spending. But all we hear is don't cut this or don't cut that. Well if we don't cut anything and get rid of our debt than how is anything going to get better? We can't just keep adding to it. This is insanity.

Well, that's actually what a lot of people want. Keep adding programs, and increasing taxes to cover it.

I agree, there should be NO new spending and drastic cuts are in order. They just dont get it.

I think you are on the right track though I feel that my state and the states surrounding mine might go for the High Speed Rail. I live in Oregon and both Washington and California both have transit systems. Where I live we have Trimet and also Ctran which is Washington's transit system. I don't know what California calls theirs. I do think that they will go for the High Speed Rail if they get the chance to which really doesn't make since as we already have Amtrak why not get Amtrak to create this high speed rail I mean they would love the money. I guess it is most likely because the people who choose to travel by train aren't in a hurry to get where they are going I mean I ride my bicycle everywhere and I am not in a hurry to get anywhere really ever. So people who take the train aren't going to care if it takes them 4 hours or 6 hours they are taking the train for the views they get to see and how peaceful a train ride can be compared to an airport.
