What would you do if you found a mouse?

Mouse - The baby mouse I caught inside of a cup.

My oldest found a mouse in the house. This doesn't surprise me. We live in the country and get our share of "pesky critters" from time to time. However, the one he found is just a baby. I just don't have the heart to toss him out, or worse yet, kill him. I can't keep him or release him though, that's for sure. So, I guess I'll just wait for my husband to do the dirty work for me. It's the least he could do after I caught a snake the other day that had found it's way in here... So, what would you do if you found a mouse or other pesky critter in your house? Would you kill it? Capture it? Release it? Keep it? Leave it alone? Scream like a girl while standing on a table or chair? What if it was just a baby? What would you do then?

I trapped an opossum once, just a baby. It was visiting our deck every night, nibbling on food I had out there for my dogs/cats. I drove the little fella about 5 miles away and released him into a field. I doubt he'll ever find his way back here! I've rescued other critters that either my cat brought in or found their own way in and set them free. The rodent-types, I drive the 5 miles before releasing since I know that if I just let it go out the door, it wouldn't be long before it was right back in here. I know how you feel about that baby mouse. I once watched as my cat cornered a little mouse. The cat was closing in when the mouse put up one tiny little paw to try and defend itself. I couldn't handle it! I ran and grabbed a jar, put the open end as close to the mouse as I could and it gratefully ran right into the jar. I just could NOT let the cat kill it. At least I couldn't watch while he did. I took the mouse in the jar across the alley and let it go.

My sister and I did that a few years ago with an opossum baby that had gotten into her house. Caught him(her?) in a cat carrier and drove the little sucker out of town to dump it off in the woods.

Wow, you guys caught opossums? I don't think I could ever do that, even if they were babies. Those things scare the heck out of me! But then again so do snakes and here I've caught a couple of those before. I guess if I I can catch a snake I can catch just about anything...if it came down to it, that is. I just hope it never does! LOL That sounds like one smart mouse. Now if only they were smart enough to never invade homes in the first place...

Earlier it was only one easy way, just kill it. As I was scared of killing of anything, I would get help of someone and manage to do it. The main reason was that I had the through that it helps to spread so many types of deceases and its urine cause spreading of virus at the place where it is discharged. So, if found, it was only solution to get rid of it by killing or there may be chances of come back. However, it was long years back and where the place now I am staying, there is no rat and I never seen any at home for the last 10 years or more. Only at the time of rainy seasons, few of them may be running here are there near the building. Also, as there are dogs down, they rarely come around at times. Thank-s

Way too many mouse escapades in my life. I kill them. From the time I was a teenager in my parents' house I have been having problems with mice. I am not in the country but we still have mice trouble and I hate the dang things. I can't even watch mice and rats on television. They are THE WORST rodent in my book and will not spare them. Sorry if that's not what people want to hear but I found mouse poop in too many places in my house (inside a sofa bed ) that the thought of them running rampant in my house while I am sleeping makes me sick. And that mouse poop carries diseases so I don't want them anywhere near my house.

We had a mouse trap disappear in the night. Couldn't figure out how the mouse got the trap down the narrow hole. Come to find out the next day, he didn't. Seems he left the cupboard and probably spent the day under the stove or fridge. Ugh! Me walking around in my barefeet and there is a mouse nearby, perish the thought. I found out when I awoke to the sound of the mouse dragging the trap around. I didn't know that's what the sound was until after I walked right by the darn thing in the hallway, opened the fridge and the light shined on it. After I went back to bed he started moving again... towards the stairs. I totally freaked and had my husband leave work to come and deal with the situation. Hate 'em, hate 'em, hate 'em.

@ patgalca: Can't say I blame you. My mouse problems haven't been anywhere near as intense as that, but still, I hate dealing with them just the same. However, I can't help feeling bad whenever they come into my home as I know the only way to get rid of them is to kill them. I hate killing anything...well just about anything. I have no problem killing bugs, such as mosquitoes and flies. @ JJ. I beg to differ. I think rats are the worst pests. Some people may think they make wonderful pets (and I don't doubt that they do), but they are more destructive than mice...at least from what I've seen and heard anyway.

I don't feel quite as bad for what my husband and I did to eliminate our mouse issues a couple years ago after reading your response! (See my LONG response later on in this discussion lol. ) While our mouse issue didn't take long to discover and solve, it was very intense. I'd never seen a mouse in my life, and then a couple years after we bought our house we saw at least ten of them in one week. Yes, they are disgusting. Yes, they do carry diseases. Why would anyone want to live with them in their house until they can capture them and free them? The mice are still going to come right back! Ours sure did unless we killed them then and there. And you know how fast they can run, so that means they reproduce quickly, eat quickly, chew wires quickly. Everything is fast cuz they're so small...and extremely destructive. I've dealt with ant and moth problems before, too, and I'd much rather have those instead of mice. Mice are the worst pests!

No I wouldn't scream like a girl, even though I am one, because my nephew bred mice and rats, they don't bother me at all. Except for the wild ones, because they do carry disease. Um, maybe you can try to capture the whole family and take them miles away into another field...lol

Any creature I find in my house is captured and released. They are just doing what comes naturally. The only exception is cockroaches and I haven't seen any of those for years, thank God! Even flies get an open window to exit from. Oh, I kill mosquitoes, but they are rare here for some reason--funny, I remember a lot of them here when I was growing up. Too bad you evicted the snake, he would have taken care of the mouse for you!

Tell me about it. If I wasn't so darn scared of snakes I probably would have done that! LOL Wow, flies get an open window at your place? Maybe I should send any flies I get to you! LOL That way they have a better chance of surviving. I personally cannot stand flies, but I may let them live...so long as they leave my kids and I alone.

It's nice to meet a neighbor from Ohio! Having both lived in Florida, it's great how we both can relate to the crazy roaches. I always pictured cockroaches as these bugs that were impossible to kill because they several lives, could collapse their bodies to fit under anything and get in anywhere, and even if you squashed them, it didn't always work! Ugh!! I cringe to think of the things. I'd heard many horror stories, but I'm glad I don't really have any of my own...other than the allergies I brought back with me! It's nice to meet someone who loves the northern states like I do and is content living up here! I just get tired of people complaining about Michigan and Ohio winters. I'm sure it might be a different story in the next few months, but I've always loved it here. It's so nice to get to know you better and keep up the good work!

If I found small mouse ( baby) I would keep it as a pet. I found mouse last year and we decided first to try not to kill it but to get rid of it. So we spry menthol oil everywhere as we read that mice don't like menthol oil. And it helped. They moved out. Later we seal every holes in our flat to prevent mice to get back here. Since that time there was no mouse. But I have other problem more disgusting - Spoders. I kill them and spry poison everywhere they could be. I have nets in my windows. I hate that creepy creatures.

If I did find a mouse in my bungalow I would fill a glass jar with food and have it on a slope. I would make air marks in the lid for the little mouse to breathe. I would wait until the little mouse got in the jar, take the jar into the countryside and release the mouse. I love animals so I wouldn't kill the little mouse. He or she would deserve to live just not in my home. If it was just a baby mouse I might wait until he or she got a bit older before capture and release. When I lived in my cottage I had a lounge and a tiny kitchen. It was an open plan sort of style. I found mice living in my lounge. So I cleared all food from where they might have been getting it from. I went to my local pet shop and bought a trap that would catch the mice live. I caught each mouse and released them in the countryside I live just ten minutes walk from open countryside in those days.

Ever since we cleaned up the mountain of weeds that were growing under our huge mango tree last year, we have been getting mice in the house on & off for the past year...I always have mouse traps set up in the kitchen (for some reason, the mice are really only inside in the winter to be warmer I guess). I catch a mouse or 2 in the traps at least once a night. I know it's cruel to set traps but I can't see any other way to get them out of my house as my dogs aren't that good at catching mice!

I really hate killing any animals big or small, I even have a hard time killing a bug. I would take it outside and let it go. Now if the snake was poisonous I take it way out somewhere. I kill spiders only if I think they poisonous and I hate doing it cause they wanna live too

Hi sacmom! I would feel pity towards the baby mouse, too. But I will have the heart to throw it away outside the house. I won't have the heart to kill it because that would be disgusting! And it would be like animal cruelty since it is still a baby. And you found a snake on its way to your house? I hate snakes! I wouldn't know what to do if I see one entering our house. Well, I'm sure I will scream like a girl. That would surely catch attention and hopefully from someone who will have the guts to kill it. ^^ If it was a cockroach or something like that, I wouldn't have a problem of killing it. If it's a frog or toad, ewww!!! I'll let my mom shoo it away! lol

If I found a mouse in my house, I guess I would just put it back outside again, because there are no holes or places where a mouse could nest. We have solid concrete floor and walls that have no holes in at all. Cupboards and closets are regularly used and opened and we know there are no nests anywhere. We live in a country village and see losts of wild life come and go in our garden, but are careful to keep doors shut when we go out there, because that is the only way they could get in. Windows are fairly high and they can't climb up there. I grew up on a farm though, and there was lots of mice around and often rats were in the stables where the horses would come and feed. We had to take care to keep stables clean and all rodents out, because we did not want the horse food contaminated. _Derek

Well, I can't be 100% sure that they won't climb up to our windows, but the openings are about feet from the ground outside, and they are not open all of the time or when we are out for any length of time. I am not sure how they would be able to grip on the glass to climb up to the opening window that is at the top. I think perhaps even a mouse would find his feet would slip... _Derek

I looked at some of the discussions first, and was amazed and relieved that having mice or mouse, seemed to be a common problem. I have a mouse ( hopefully not mice)At first it was under the sink cupboard and was chewing on the cat biscuits. i cleared the cupboard, scrubbed it and stored everything in containers. It appeared again, one evening while i was surfing the net and watching tv ( I'm a woman- I can do both) i could hear this rattling noise and as i was watching a gardening programme, I assumed it was something on tv then thought it was my dog eating his biscuits. then I looked at my dog and realised he was fast asleep, looked at the bowl and saw a mouse, head first in the bowl,I didnt scream as I'm not scared of mice( I used to own rats) but must have gasped in surprise as the mouse legged it behind a unit. This was about a month ago, and at the time I did have 2 cats( one has since been put to sleep - cancer sadly)so i let them have the run of the house. then i was sitting quietly again surfing the net, watching tv, and blow me down, the mouse was in the same place again, it shot behind the fireplace this time. then believe it or not, it stuck its little head out and just sat there. it was very small, very clean looking with shiny fur and eyes. it eventually backed off when i got to my feet and i could see it behind the fireplace. I 'm ashamed to say i sprayed it with air freshener to make it go away. i am not happy putting down poison, because of the cat and dog, plus it would die somewhere and stink the place out. I am very reluctant to trap it as i think that is quite cruel(air freshener ??) and have visions, of a semi conscious little body in a trap. But one question, do they make a noise, i was in the kitchen the other night and there was a very high pitched squeaking coming from somewhere, could it be the mouse, or mice??
@sacmom (14192)

23 Aug 11
Yes, they sure do. I'm guessing it's more than one as they only seem to squeak when they fight or there are baby mice around...
30 Aug 11
aargh more than one, and babies!! to add insult to injury, its been quiet for a few weeks, so relieved, but last night heard rattling noises again, and the cheeky little perisher had nabbed some of my dog biscuits. they were hidden behind the unit!! so cleared the biscuits and have decided to get the humane traps. Its got to be done.

Here in my country, if they caught a mouse or some critters inside their house, we tend to kill it right away for it not to multiply anymore. In my cousin's house, what I do is I use a cage trap to lure them and when I have a mouse, I threw it outside the house compound. I don't know what will happen to that little critter since our alley has plenty of cats waiting or squatting for shelter.
