How are you paying for Christmas?

I know that things have been very lean for our family this year because of a variety of things. However, there is one thing that I will never let happen and that is to not allow our children to have a magical Christmas. My goal this year was to pay for Christmas exclusively with money and gift cards that I've been able to earn online and it looks like that is going to be reality. I've already done a lot of shopping on Amazon with gift cards that I've earned from a few different sites and I hope to be able to buy the clothes for the kids with the money that I've earned writing articles and working on mylot. Actually, I used the actual paypal cash that I've earned to bail our family out, but my husband does know that when he gets his extra paycheck, he owes me that money back. I buy Christmas presents for my two children, three nieces, brother, sister, sister-in-law, mother and husband. What about you, how are you paying for Christmas this year and how many people do you have to buy for.

I usually put aside a certain amount that I expect to spend for Christmas and then I do things like buy things on sale or clearance, make and keep of list of things I'm looking for, and shop over time. The bulk of gifts I will be getting are mostly going to my daughter, but I also have my husband to shop for, a small circle of close friends, my parents, my sister and brother in law, my 3 nieces, my other sister and brother in law and my nephew. The easy thing here is that I will either send money or gift cards to my older kids, and gift cards probably to my sisters, and the only things I will have to ship will be for the kids. It's much easier to plan when you've been putting aside a few dozen dollars a week and taking advantage of things you see for 3 bucks that used to cost 15 lol.

Oh clearance is definitely my best friend. Paul had his fifth birthday last week and I got all of his birthday clothes either from a clearance rack at Target or with a 25% off coupon that I had for Children's Place. I was also able to get a dress for my oldest niece, who will be turning five in December for only $4.50 that was regularly $15. I would say that I save an average of 30% on my Christmas shopping by never passing a clearance rack by.

Things have certainly been lean for us here too but that's been my story since I lost my job in '03, stayed home exclusivly for 5yrs, and now I work part time (it helps but not enough, need full time work but you know bout the cost of child care as I do). I have saved some Amazon GC's up & some money in paypal as well. I've started picking up a few things here and there for the family as I find them cheap. I won't be buying much really as no one really "needs" anything and we don't have tons of room here. I have to buy for my Hubby, 3kids, and in-laws. I don't think we'll get anything for the SIL's unless Hubby insists as we can't gurantee they'll receive what is sent to them due to living situations for them. Maybe we'd go in on something with the IL's for them. Plus I figure we spoiled them when times were good and they have to understand we are not able to until we dig ourselves further out of debt & I can work more.

As far as my side of the family goes, we've gone a lot smaller since we moved to our house because we just don't have the disposable income that we used to have. However, it makes me feel bad if I can't get a little something for them because I get most of my joy at Christmas out of buying gifts for other people.

I think a lot of people will be in the same boat this year... I know, in my family, my sister and I had a talk just this past weekend to decide what we'll do. Things have been a bit lopsided in the past because my daughters are 18 and 21 and they purchase gifts for my sister, brother-in-law and niece. In return, my sister's family purchases one gift for each of us from the three of them together (my niece is just 13). My sister feels uncomfortable with the girls spending money from their tutoring work on Christmas gifts but they, in turn, really like to feel involved by participating in the gift giving. Our "strategy" this year is that each of us will have to make a list of 5 items that cost $15 or less. Things we enjoy like treats, cozy socks, pj pants, whatever... so everyone will have something to open on Christmas Eve, when we get together for dinner, but no more with the $50+ gifts that are just budget breaking. Within my own house, like you, I've been setting aside some of my online earnings in my paypal account and I'll try to stretch that as far as it goes first. The one thing I'm trying to figure out right now is how to buy my younger daughter a flute. She played in high school but, since she just graduated and is now in college, she has no access to the borrowed instruments. Any flute worth keeping is going to easily run in the $200-300 range so that is going to have to be "her big gift" and I'll supplement that with some smaller items. I applaud your devotion to giving your children such a nice Christmas I feel the same way. My daughters get very little during the year, except for their birthdays, because I pay for their education in full. When Christmas comes, that's my one time of year that I splurge and try to spoil them. They are really good kids and I'm blessed... and being able to give them a nice Christmas is something that means a lot to me.

I was the same way when my girls were young. I'd get toys when they were deeply discounted (you can get some really good sales on toys for younger children, I find!) and put them away throughout the year. They didn't get a toy every time we went shopping or anything like that. I find it a lot harder now that they are older because their "toys" at this age are really expensive LOL People have told me I spoil them too much at Christmas... but they don't understand how things work in my house the rest of the year. We don't shop for sport or hobby :) We only buy necessities. So, to me, Christmas is that one time of year that's special and, as a result, we all really look forward to the holidays and we have a lot of fun together.

I budget more for Christmas because I'm not big on buying a lot of things throughout the year. I've called myself a toy grinch before because I really don't purchase much except for Christmas and birthday. This year I'm planning to replace my daughter's small leather chair because the one she has is getting really worn out from use, and she needs a beanbag or a second chair since she almost always has a friend here. Other than that, she has asked for one Wii game and a second remote, a new camera, and that's about it. Her birthday is in late January so what I usually do is buy things all year long and put them away, I buy larger clothes when I see cute things go on sale or clearance and hide them in my closet. If I see toys like LPS really cheap, I'll purchase multiples and hide those as well. By the time Christmas is here, I will be done shopping for both and all that's left to do is decide which to wrap for Christmas and which to continue hiding for the birthday.

I think that I might be a toy grinch too because the only times that the kids get new toys is for their birthdays and for Christmas and even at their birthdays I personally only get them one toy. Christmas is another story. This year it is especially important for me to give them a great Christmas because of everything that we've been through this year like not having the vacation that we were supposed to have and just barely scraping by as my husband is going through chemotherapy. Luckily, his last treatment is next week and that in and of itself will lead to great holidays for me. Although, I must admit that I wouldn't complain to find a Keurig coffee machine under the Christmas tree.

I´m glad that you have managed to save money for your little ones. I know this has not been a good year for you, friend. I will not buy many Christmas presents this year. Most of my grandchildren are in their late teens and I´ll just give them a big hug. I will buy presents for the small grandkids (3) and make my apricot jam to give as a present to the rest.

Kids can be taught to want other than material things, dorann. It´s not easy because TV commercials are full of things they want. When my kids were little, we had a Christmas with no money. I bought clay and made a manger with them, all the while while learning carols so they could sing them at Christmas. Both daughters remember that Christmas more than other with more toys.

But honestly, it is more than just material things that I've had to say no to them about. They've not been allowed to have company at the house because of the fear of Daddy getting sick. We had to quit doing our sports activities (gymnastics and such) because money didn't allow for it. And we've not even been able to have the free family outings (hiking, fishing and even going to the park) because their dad didn't feel up to it.

You think you might be able to send a jar of that apricot jam up to me as well. You are right, this has not been a good year for us and I feel bad that there have been so many times that I've had to tell the kids no when it comes to something that they've wanted. I'm going to try my hardest to make it up to them.

Good for you! My 2 kids are teenagers so they know how tight things are for us. I too have been putting away the gift cards I have been earning so that I can give them to them in their stocking. I will still buy them something else but I will hope that my Christmas Bonus from my part time job will cover that!

I think that the ability to earn gift cards online is a great tool when times are tight in the family. It is absolutely amazing to me how many great gifts I've been able to buy with them.

Things have been tough for us as well and I usually figure it out in the end. I was not able to buy all the "magical" things I normally was able to but I made the best of it last year and might I say we had a wonderful time. I am also working on somehow making it a great time once again this year, though it is looking grim. I am glad you are preparing and that you and your family will have a great Christmas. I don't have to buy for many, as I will do like last year and only do so for the kids. I took it very hard last year because I use to be able to do more. But I realized that the kids actually enjoyed it and that to me is what counted.

I do believe that if the kids are able to enjoy Christmas, then that is really all that matters. That is actually one of the reasons that I've looked at the things that the kids really need and that is what I am basing their presents off of. For example, they've both outgrown their bicycles so I will be getting each of them a bigger bicycle for Christmas.

I am using my online earnings for a big item for my son and grandson. I will then buy something for my husband with them. I also cash in for gift cards for restaurants that I give my parents for Christmas. The rest we will buy out of our paychecks unless I get lucky and make a little more. That basically takes care of everyone except for the teachers and aides in my sons class, and my other son and daughter.

I really like that idea of gift cards for restaurants for your parents. I don't know that I will be able to do that this year, but it is something that I will keep in mind for next year as a gift to my brother and sister-in-law, they love to go out to eat.

We're fortunate in that my parents and my husband's parents will be very generous int heir gifts to our son. I've accumulated a few gift cards to stores as well as to Amazon, so we should be able to stretch our Christmas budget for presents for the kids, that sort of thing. I've been sewing small things for my son's friends and picking up small toys for his stocking, so I should be able to be very relaxed about my Christmas budget.

It is great that your family members will be generous in their gifts to your child. My mother has been struggling for a while and my in-laws really have more than they can do most of the time, but I know they will help to make Christmas special.

Well, now I don't feel so bad. There have been times when I've had a little bit of money that I will start my Christmas and birthday shopping on the day after Christmas. I've found some great deals on toys the day after Christmas as well as seeing the gift sets marked down to 50%.

Christmas is just an expensive season isn't it? But I am thinking of making some gifts probably. This November I will be studying dress making and i will learn to make some pajamas. So for my children and nieces I will just make them some pajamas which is definitely cheaper than the set in the malls. I might make some pouches or clutches for my friends. My husband would also have some gift certificates that we can use for shopping. For the tree ornaments we are planning to do some crafts with the children. We don't want to spend a lot for Christmas decors here. We might be using the boxes of my husband for his samples to make some gingerbread man, candy canes and bell ornaments that we can paint together with the children. This Christmas should be a nature loving Christmas and not full of plastics decors and toys.

Making gifts is something that I really enjoy doing and I'm considering making a gift for my mother this year that features her five grandchildren. I just haven't decided what it is yet. I made a poem plaque for my grandmother many years ago and it was something that she treasured and always kept in a place of honor in her home.

Hi dorannmwin! I, too, will be paying for some of Christmas with those Amazon cards I have built up . . . had I looked into these sites earlier in the game, perhaps I would have more at this point (I think I started in May). I also have some various stash of cash I've "collected" throughout the year (gift from parents, etc) - all going back as gifts. We'll make Christmas nice for the kids - but not in the way of "many" gifts, so I'm not going to go wild like in previous years. We seem to have a long list of gifts we need to get . . . so I'm going be as frugal as possible to stretch these dollars to make sure we get to everyone on the list. I'm thinking of baking stuff this year for gifts - but we'll see!!

Though I will admit that some of the gifts that the children are going to be getting this year are things that the want, there are also very many things that they are going to be getting that they need. For example, they will be getting some new clothes and also, hopefully, new bikes since they've both outgrown the bikes that they've had for a couple of years. I believe this is about the third year that I've been doing a lot of my Christmas shopping using gift cards that I've earned online.

And I absolutely love the idea of getting bikes for the kids because they will be something that they should be able to use for a long time. Kathryn got her current bike about three years ago and this was Paul's second year with the one that he has.

When I get my paycheck, from my regular-offline job, it's usually already garnished. I've set up my bank account so that a few dollars gets transferred to another account regularly. This is how I pay for unexpected expenses. And some expected ones, like Christmas. I think you deserve a great Christmas after all your (and your hubby's) struggle this year.

I agree that we deserve a great Christmas this year. However, my way of thinking about it is that I really don't need presents, expect for that silly coffee maker that I've fallen in love with. If the kids are full of joy at the things that we are able to get for them, then it really makes me a happy person.

Much like you, I use my online earnings and gift card to pay for Christmas. My husband and I are taking our budget for spending on each other and putting it into an account so that we can do a big trip for ourselves when we reach our 10th wedding anniversary. Both of our families have cut way back, opting to spend time together doing something fun over gifts that are going to sit in a closet until the next rummage sale, so that really cuts down on the price. We are traveling to Arizona for Christmas so my daughter can see her grandparents(my husbands parents). They paid for our daughter's plane ticket, and we used credit card points for our tickets. Next year, my hubby's family will come to us, but I hope to instill in my daughter that the holidays are about spending time together and not about the toys that you get.

As far as travelling for Christmas goes, that has never been something that we really have to do. My mother and siblings live on the other side of town and my in-laws live in the next town north of us. We do typically travel about 100 miles to see my dad's side of the family over Christmas though.

You are right, I can only begin to imagine how it would be if I had a family that is larger than the family that I've got. What a great idea! Children need to know that Christmas is not only about the gifts they receive, but it is, without getting into religious detail, about spending time with people you love, like family and friends. Now that I am older, I receive mostly practical gifts which I use on a regular basis. I know that toys are so exciting to receive when you are younger, but most of the time they are played with for a short period of time and then put in the toy box only to be covered up with toys that are received from future birthdays and holidays. So, i feel that it is good to buy your children things that they need and to not break the bank doing it. Kudos to you!! This year, I am going to pay for Christmas gifts with money that I set aside from each paycheck. On my Mom's side of the family, we draw one name and only have to buy a gift worth up to $30 for that person. Aside from that one person, I have to buy for my Mom, Dad/StepMom, 2 nieces, Brother and Sister and Law, and other Brother. I do have cousins, but My mom still pitches in for the full price of their gifts. Luckily, I only have to by one gift for my Dad and StepMom and Brother and Sister in Law, since they are couples. Phew! I think my bank just broke writing about this.

That is one thing that my children do understand is that Christmas is not all about the gifts. We do make a point to spend time with my family and my husband's family every year at Christmas and we also go for an evening to Cincinnati to see my father's family as well because we typically only get to see all of my aunts and uncles once or twice a year.

It is really a good idea to start saving a little bit of money every month for the Christmas spending that we will all do each year. My goal for next year is to put back at least $10 every week so that I will know that I have a Christmas budget as Christmas draws nearer. I would have done that this year but our family has had a lot of unexpected expenses this year that didn't allow it to be possible.

I have a lot of cardstock here, and have some rubber stamps. I have 120 crayons, a hotfix tool (It's a tool to paste glue-backed rhinestones/studs via heat.) and an iron as well. The only things I'm buying are for the additional material to make unique cards, like rhinestones and studs. So, that's basically what I'm spending on this season. If I were you, I would not going to ask him to pay my money back. It does not mean that he should not this money. After all, you are a family. You definitely did not just have one a Christmas for your whole life. You pay this time and You husband should pay next time. You could make it clear and then have a quarrelsome with your husband or make it vague to keep a good mood for everyone. My family usually did this way. My mom seldom argued money with my dad. They both have works. When someone needs money support, another one would come out to rescue. That is the way that they keep peace. If you could not bear this or you need those money to do something else, you should discuss with your husband first and ask him his opinion. I think that would make both satisfy.

Well, it is all our money no matter which way that we look at it. He knows that I have to be able to get some clothes for the kids for Christmas and I've been working hard to try to help our family out. This is definitely not something that is going to cause contention in our family.
