A new choice in cooking oil

For the last two or three months I have been using coconut oil for all my cooking needs. I like to brown my meat before I add it to soup or stews and the coconut oil seems to give it more browning for the same time. I also like the flavor of the oil, at first I thought this might be a problem, but so far it just adds a richer taste to my dishes. Before I used olive oil with not the same success as this coconut oil. If you haven't tried it you might like to. It's also a health booster.

I recently learned that coconut oil is what makes theater popcorn taste so special. If you like popcorn, you should try it! I haven't seen coconut oil in my grocery but I'll search it out. I can't help but think it would be healthier than other oils since it comes from such a healthy source. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks, Dee! I'll look for it next time I'm there--I'm trying to limit visits to Walmart but have to go there sometimes.

I will give coconut oil a try for some things but the only bad thing about it is it has a pretty low smoke point I think, like olive oil, so it wouldn't be very good for cooking with high heat such as stir frying. For that I use peanut oil and for even higher heat cooking, canola oil. I'll definitely give it a try for some things though.

I was told that it was much more heat tolarent. I use it for stir frying all the time, where I couldn't use olive oil. You could also try grape oil, newly available in USA but good for high heat.

I remember my grandma used to make coconut oil for domestic consumption. We have never used other type of oil except coconut oil. But her process of making coconut oil was by boiling the coconut milk to get the oil. But it is believed that cold pressed oil is much healthier. I have tried making coconut oil by sun drying the coconut milk to extract the VCO. It was a tedious job. I rather buy it from the farmer's market to save me all the trouble. I have been using coconut oil as a moisturiser and for my hair. Hubby doesn't like the smell of coconut oil in cooking so am still using palm oil for cooking. Maybe I should revert to using coconut oil as it is one of the healthiest oil .

It comes in a jar, it's in a solid form, but melts with just body heat. There may be a food grade. I know in other oils that have multi purposes there are different grades. I use the same thing for my skin as I do for cooking in the case of coconut oil

Here we have the peanut oil, olive oil, tea seeds oil, corn oil etc. However, I haven't used the coconut oil before. But it seems to be something natural and it shall also have a good smell, too. Is it expensive? Hopefully one day the coconut will be available here so that we can have a try to it.

I've used many different oils for cooking, among them,canola,flax-seed, vegetable, and now I'm trying unsalted butter for my Bread-machine bread. I like the butter very much because it leaves a delicious taste. However I want to try coconut oil, because I have always liked the unusual coconut perfume. Unsalted butter is not good for frying because it smokes at a low heat.

I have not tried coconut oil. I have been using olive or canola oil. I will have to see if my local store carries it. I do like a crisper browning to my meat that is going into stews and soups. Thanks for the info.

I have seen the coconut oil at the grocery store but I have never tried it. I have used the Canola and the Olive oil before. I haven't really noticed much of a flavor with these oils..except that the Olive oil seems to be a lighter oil if that makes sense. I will have to give that Coconut oil a try.

My hubby and i use peanut oil sometimes but rarely. We normally use vegetable oil and olive oil. I never knew coconut oil was a health booster or browned meat the same as other oil. Thank you for this discussion and i will tell my hubby about it. Maybe we will start using coconut oil and see how it is the taste and everything you mentioned.

For us, we've taken to using a lot of peanut oil in our house. I don't exactly remember why we first tried it, but it does do a great job when we are trying to fry something. I've never thought about trying coconut oil. What we never use in our home is soybean based oil. The reason that we don't use any soybean oil is because of the fact that they use a soy based coolant in the machines at my husband's place of employment and because of being exposed to it all the time, my husband has gotten somewhat sensitive to it.

I have tried many different types of oils. Some are good for some dishes. But I still mainly use olive oil. Not extra virgin. Also, sometimes when I do cook with olive oil I also use some butter. Thats lends a better texture to things. I think coconut oil is good for some things not all.

A lot of people in South India use coconut oil for cooking. I myself have never tried it for cooking but have tasted food cooked in coconut oil and liked the taste. Not too sure about buying a whole bottle though because if I dont like it then it will get wasted.

The people of southern part of India and Shreelanka use coconut oil for cooking. Most of the people of these two areas are fatty. So this oil may be health booster. We use coconut oil on our hair. This oil prevents hair fall.
