I add used coffee grounds aropund the stems of various veggies and flowers in my yards. it helps to keep away dangerous insects and ants mostly. It also adds nutrients to the soil as they are watered down. Have you ever done this for your garden and or plants at all?

I don't know if you drink tea, but it is also worth keeping your used tea leaves for use on the garden. and if you make tea in a pot, use the remains (cooled, obviously) on your houseplants. They'll thrive on it.

I drink tea from tea bags and we set them alongside the stems of plants as well. Thanks for the info as well.

I definately have to try that next year with my vegetables. I did get about 8 tomatoes this year, which is 8 more than I got last year, by pot planting. Maybe the coffee grounds will yield me more. My flowers however, have been very successful this year, by leaving them potted rather than putting them in the ground. I am going to put them in the ground eventually but probably not til the end of the season.

We have an issue with ants and they are all over. I can't add the granular stuff I use on my lawn as it turns the plants yellow. My wife read about the coffee gorunds years ago and it really works. We have ants all over except where the coffee grounds are laid out. Fall or early spring are the times to transplant flowers etc most times.

I've always put coffee grounds around my plants for the nutrients in it and to help balance the ph of the soil, but I didn't know that it would deter insects. Thanks for that information. I also save my eggshells and when they are nice and dry I crumble them up fine and mix them with the coffee grounds. Most plants benefit from the calcium in them.

We have used eggshells broken into small pieces as
well around plants for the nutrient etc additive.

happylolthumbuphi Grandpa Bob I did not know that, and its non toxic too, which
makes it doubly good, you can keep away the bugs without nasty
chemical sprays. I have never done that, this is one of the things I like about mylot I keep learning things, and you have the gardening expertise that I so admire. my mom was like that, she could grow anything, flowers or veggies.one year we had cucumber p;lants sprawled out around the green beans and my grandpa kept saying that wont work but he was so wrong. we had tons of cucumbers and green bean, and tomatoes and everything else. mom just had a natural flair for growing stuff of any kind. lol.

Thank you very much also. Cucumbers don't have a large root system so they don't take up a lot of soil space. they can be planted around other plants without choking them out.

I put coffee grounds in my compost pile. They really make the compost rich. I haven't heard of putting it around the plants.

It does the same thing as it does for the compost. Adds nutrients to it.
