What would you do? |
|
My daughter has just rung (on a friend's cell phone) to tell us that she has lost the cell phone that we got to replace the cell phone that she lost in May! She's away at university and whilst I do not care for the things myself, it is a good way to keep in contact with her, and for her to call us. She calls us at least once a day and we call her very frequently too. I am not very inclined to buy her another, but then I might be cutting off my nose to spite my face. Does she deserve another phone? What are your views please?

1. BCMike (3316) | 1 year ago | If you do, might I suggest something very basic and inexpensive? I would also suggest one with a camera too though. IF you do that is.

p1kef1sh (5630) | 1 year ago | That's pretty much what I was thinking Mike. I'm not sure about the camera though. That's spoiling her! LOL.

BCMike (3316) | 1 year ago | I love my camera on my cell phone. I can take as many pictures as I want to and just email them to myself. Instant download. And the newer cameras are way better than mine. I just really like the simplicity of my phone.
Mind you. I have had moments of periodic lust for a BlackBerry... My sister calls them CrackBerry phone because they are so addictive and expensive to keep up the habit.
I tend to agree.

p1kef1sh (5630) | 1 year ago | You can sometimes get blackberries cheapI(Sh) on Ebay Mike. My BIL sold his on there and lost a fortune!

BCMike (3316) | 1 year ago | Buying them is the cheap part. Owning and using it is the expensive part. My company has a plan that will allow me unlimit access to "THEIR" choice of 100 sites. After that I can surf for 5 cents per page. I could be broke several times over if I tried using this site. I tried downloading their list of sites but I couldn't even find that list.

pergammano (1956) | 1 year ago | Hi..all! I have a system called "Majic Jack", it plugs into a port on monitor & you plug a phone into it! You need a dedicated phone (for it only)....the little "Majic Jack" is $57.00 for the first year .. and after that $20.00 a year.. AND THIS IS FOR UNLIMITED LONG DISTANCE CALLING...AND I MEAN UNLIMITED! This way your daughter can call you 24/7 for 365 days a year & it will only cost you $20.00! It runs thru your computer, so all pics can be downloaded on it...or you can use your "video cam" for live conversation!
My son is currently in China....we have talked incessantly....sometimes for up to an hour, and if we would have been using our Rogers/Telus phone system, we figure we would have racked up a $711.00 phone bill .. so far...but it's all covered for $20.00, so it has paid for itself (for years to come) just in the first month! Cheers!

2. stephcjh (22403) | 1 year ago | She does not deserve to have another phone but I think you should go ahead and get another one so you may be able to contact her. I hope she is more responsible with this one.

p1kef1sh (5630) | 1 year ago | My thoughts too Steph. I hope that she might show more responsibility with it too.

pergammano (1956) | 1 year ago | Sorry....forgot to add that with the "Majic Jack" she cannot lose it! It's attached to her computer...lol! Cheers!

3. gemini_rose (10117) | 1 year ago | Kids are great arn't they for how well they look after things? "easy come, easy go". I have one who does not care too much about stuff and if something is lost or broke thinks it is OK Mum will sort it out!
If it was my lad I would be quite cross but as you say when they are away from home being in touch with them is important so I would probably buy him another but I would only buy him a cheap one. If he wants a dearer more upmarket one he would have to find the money for it himself.
My sister in law got quite a smart little phone from WH Smith the other day for £15 if that is any help, it has nothing fancy on it but it does the job she wants it for.

5. dianel (4592) | 1 year ago | well i never was a cell phone person either until my oldest daughtes car just died one winter on the expressway with my 4 year old grandaughter in the car and her kitten. they were taking him to the vet. Thank the good lord a cop came by or who knows what would have happened to them, it was very cold out and snowing they could not walk that was for sure so ever since that incident she has a cell phone and I now have a cheap one just for emergencies. I think its needed these days but shouldnt be abused. I would make her pay for some of it at least half that way she may keep a better eye on it, just my opinion pikey the more u give these kids the less responsibilty they take.

6. ElicBxn (15091) | 1 year ago | has she tried calling her old number? if so,what happened? if not, why not
I mislay my cell all the time and track it with the ring
she at least needs to get the number canceled so nobody else can use it.
| |
| |
|
|
p1kef1sh (5630) | 1 year ago | It was a prepaid phone and she'd used up all the credit so they're welcome to it Elic. She thinks that she left it at a bar so she's going up there later when they open. Blooming children.

7. aslanlight (1573) | 1 year ago | I think that she has to learn to look after things more carefully so teach her a lesson. She'll have some money, my son gets EMA for going to college. I expect she can't do without her phone so you could either tell her to buy an inexpensive purely functional one herself, I got ours for £8 each or that if you buy it she'll have to buy the next one?
| |
| |
|
|
p1kef1sh (5630) | 1 year ago | Good thinking. She's only going to have a pay as you go, but she can buy the credit.
| |
|
|
aslanlight (1573) | 1 year ago | Yes but are you going to tell her that she can buy the next phone if she loses it? I bet she'd look after it better.

8. book1962 (14517) | 1 year ago | Sigh.......... that does not sound too good with your daughter losing the second cell phone now in such a short time. How does she do that, I cant understand how one can lose a cellphone....... If I were in your shoes P1ke I would handle the situation like this: It is very useful for her to have a cell phone and so I would buy a cellphone for her but make her pay it back in small amounts cause she was careless. Even if it takes a lot of time till she has paid that off but it will teach her a lesson. Good luck on this.

p1kef1sh (5630) | 1 year ago | The phones itself is quite cheap Book. I've decided that she can buy the credit for it. I am cross about it though.

9. positiveminded1977 (4517) | 1 year ago | LOL!! I guess it depends on the age of the daughter and what her father feels about financing a new mobile phone for her.:) If the father feels the daughter is old enough to somehow finance her own mobile phone, then he doesn't need to buy her another phone to replace the one she lost. However, if this is a doting father, then it is a different story.:)
Cheers and happy mylotting
