Will I survive if I will become a vegetarian?  email this discussion to a friend?

While my husband and I were having dinner one time, he suddenly asked me this question: Will you survive if you will just eat vegetables? . . . I thought for a while and thought so hard about it. I have been eating rice, meat, chicken, fish and almost everything served on the table. While trying to convince myself that I can survive with vegetables alone, I suddenly threw the question back to my husband. I was surprised when he answered positively. Until now, I am still trying to figure out if I will really survive with vegetable alone. Maybe the vegetarians can help me give the advantages of being a vegetarian. Please share your ideas.

If you look at the evolution of man, as a species, we were never exclusively a plant-eating animal. The key to healthy living is having a balanced diet. I don't think forsaking meat means having a balanced diet. I don't think there has ever been an in-depth scientific study on the real effects of having an exclusive vegan diet to the human body. So it would be presumptuous to conclude that being vegan means you'll live a healthier life. Maybe I'll convert to a vegan lifestyle if and when I finally see the day when a vegan becomes an olympic champion. happy Just my thought, before somebody else thinks I'm putting down vegans. To each his own I guess. happy

Thanks for that nice thought spoiledbrat. I know tha most Olympic Champions do have meat in their diet and they have special diet in fact. Balanced diet is very important for all of us.

One of my sisters was a vegetarian for at least five years and I have to say that it finally took it's toll on her. Keeping a vegetarian diet is not how we were made to eat that I'm aware of. She was always getting sick. Now that she is finally incorporating beans, rice, chicken, fish and meat back in her life she's starting to look healthier and has a glow to her skin.

I highly recommend to anyone who wants to take a vegetarian diet should be seeing a nutritionist first to determine if that would be a healthy choice.

Oh, that's not a good effect to one's health. The effect on your sister's health of just eating vegetables has high probability of likewise happening to me. I ahve to think it over again. Thanks.

You just need to be careful. Find a nutritionist that works for you and together you can find a diet plan that will work. It may or may not be a vegan diet. happy

I don't think you can. LoL. Kidding! It's really up to you how much you want to be a vegetarian in the first place... Maybe eating different dishes and trying different sauces or cooking methods will make vegetables more interesting. Maybe if you're not bored with the veggies alone, you'll be able to survive the diet longer.

If I will make a career out of dieting , maybe I will survive. LOL. . But I will surely miss the food I have been eating since I was a child.

I'm not a vegetarian but know others do very well eating only vegetables for meals. This is a safe and healthy way of eating. I enjoy pizza, hamburgers and other Italian foods too much and wouldn't be a good candidate for a vegetarian lifestyle. Growing up, we ate alot of meat and potatoes. Old habits are hard to break. Good discussion.

myLot reputation of 93/100. dorisday1971 (3036)   ranked 226 out of 5,089 in eating  3 years ago

Old habits are absolutely hard, if not impossible, to break. I immediately thought of my favorite foods when this being a vegetarian question was thrown to me by my husband. Oh, I don't think I can let go my favorite dishes.

But I don't beans. I have arthritis and beans are not good for me. It will worsen my arthritic shoulders. There are many delicious vegetable dishes and I have tried some of them too.

That really depends, but the fact that you're wondering about it probably means that you're not. I guess you can survive in the existential sense of the word but I don't think you'd be very happy about it. There are a couple of studies that show that when you try not to have something (chocolate for example), you tend to keep craving for those things. Meat is pretty much the same.

Personally I love vegetables but I couldn't live without the meat. =)

myLot reputation of 93/100. dorisday1971 (3036)   ranked 226 out of 5,089 in eating  3 years ago

I like your response. I guess you are right in saying that I could survive being a vegan but will not be happy with it. yeah, how can I be happy if I will be missing the usual food I eat.

pauspaidtoclick (30)  3 years ago

Thank you. It's always possible to learn certain behaviors but if you're healthy and don't really have a reason to become a vegetarian then it would be hard to do.

Me and Hubby are vegetarians too, but we also do eat meat ones or twice a week. But regarding your question, maybe yes you can survive of being vegetarian if you have discipline.

You can substitute tofu for meat. There are other means of cooking tofu and i am sure that you like the taste of it too. Sometimes, cooking lentils and dal or any organic foods will also help you.

But i was thinking why you want to avoid such meat and fish? it is a good source of protein too and needed by our body.Although proper moderation is needed to make it balance. Anyway i hope you can adjust for the mean time.

myLot reputation of 93/100. dorisday1971 (3036)   ranked 226 out of 5,089 in eating  3 years ago

yeah, tufo is a great substitute for meat. I just don't eat this much often. Balanced diet is really very important. I'm so glad that you and your hubby have that discipline to stick to your diet. I guess I would fail on that aspect. LOL

If you eat meat once or twice a week you are not , nor can you describe yourself as vegetarians. Vegetarians eat no meat, ever, but incorporate eggs and dairy into their diet. Vegans eat no animal products at all.

I am not a vegetarian and so I won't really convince you to be one. But that is a good topic you have started. For me I am am being asked the same question maybe I will also throw it back. I know that it is good to be a vegetarian and I am definitely sure that people can still survive "literally.' But since I am a person who loves to eat, I can't take a situation wherein I will see others enjoying meat, chicken and other delicious foods made of meat. I love burgers, chicken and other delicious foods and I can't sacrifice my cravings with them. So I guess it is not really good and advisable to sacrifice eating other delicious foods. I will just go for more on vegetables and fruits and less meat than sacrificing all meat forever. Maybe you can consider that better than eating meat more.

myLot reputation of 93/100. dorisday1971 (3036)   ranked 226 out of 5,089 in eating  3 years ago

Thanks for being so honest. I also love eating meat, chicken, and almost everything. . . I think I cannot forego all these food. I'd rather eat more vegetables and eat meat as well. isn't that more balanced?

I know a few people who do not eat meat, but they do not exclusively eat only vegetables either. they incorporate pasta, eggs, beans etc. in their diets, that way they are getting proteins in their bodies. There are even vegetarian burgers, hotdogs, fish etc. I have not tried any of the vegetarian substitutes, but when cooked, they smell like the real things.
I only eat chicken and fish, and stay away from pork and beef as much as I can.

myLot reputation of 93/100. dorisday1971 (3036)   ranked 226 out of 5,089 in eating  3 years ago

I also know some people who claim to be vegetarian but eat eggs and chicken. my idea of being a vegetarian is eating nothing except vegetables. The vegetables may be prepared in many different ways to make it tasty but not putting eggs or chicken on it.
