If you needed to buy a used vehicle |
|
and only have about $4000 to spend, what kind would you get?
The last time I was in this situation I had a thousand more and ended up getting a 2000 Ford Taurus. Well, that didn't work out too great. The darn thing went out 6 months after I got it. Anyway, I just sold it. I have another vehicle (a motorcycle) that I'm hoping to sell so that I'll have the money to get something reliable that'll get my family and I around. The only question is, what to get?
(I don't want to make payments so that pretty much limits me to an older car, van, or suv.)
If you needed to buy a used vehicle and were on a budget, what would you get and why?

1. almightyonline (242) | 3 months ago | Hmm... let me think.. Yeah.. i would definitely go for that camaro in the Transformers movie. It costs exactly that much as $4000. I would also get company with a friendly transformer alien and the car looks really after the second transformation! I wish if that was true..... Would have had real fun .

2. JenInTN (3627) | 3 months ago | I don't think that I would have a specific car in mind. I think that I would shop around until I found something I liked. I had a Ford aerostar van one time that I hated when I first got it but once I got used to driving it..I loved it. It was very comfortable and had plenty of room. It also had third row seating which rocked because I was forever taking kids somewhere plus their friends..lol..I only paid 2000 for it. It was a company vehicle that I put a bid in on and won. Just make sure that whatever you get tha you get it checked out first. It may cost you a little to do it but it could be worth it in the longrun.

3. Thoroughrob (7873) | 3 months ago | I would be very open, and looking for anything that has been well cared for. Sometimes your best bet is to look at estate auctions. You can get good deals there as well, and the only reason they are getting rid of it is because they are going in a home or someone has passed away.

sacmom (5825) | 3 months ago | I don't really care what it is so long as it is an automatic, can hold at least a family of 4, and of course is well care for.
I'll have to remember estate auctions. I never tried that before. I'll be sure to keep that in mind. Thanks!

4. katsmeow1213 (4882) | 3 months ago | I bought my current van, a 98 Chevy Venture for $1,200 about 18 months ago. It ran great for the first year, then it started having minor problems. The problems honestly wouldn't be that expensive to fix, but we're completely flat broke, to the point where we have to keep borrowing $5 here and there for milk and bread type stuff, so car repairs are just not happening!
Back in February of this year hubby spent about $3,000 on a 99 Dodge Durango. Now that one has problems! He bought it off a crooked dealer, of course we didn't know that at the time. They promised all these repairs, and not a single one of those repairs were ever done. Mostly it needs a new steering column and tie rod, which aren't exactly cheap, but they're not terrible either. Once those are replaced the car will be great!
For me it's not really what type of car I'd get, it would be about where I get it from and how much I spend on it.

sacmom (5825) | 3 months ago | I don't like dealing with car dealers. I'd rather get a car through a private party.
Unfortunately with the last car I had it's problem was more serious. So, I figured it would be better to sell it now while I could still get something for it.
Happy mylotting!

8. BCMike (3316) | 3 months ago | Had to say what to buy anymore. I would tend towards an Chevy Cavalier myself. Dependable little cars that are easy to buy and maintain.
Don't buy a Ford or anything European in branding. European cars work great if you can afford to keep them up and are sheer misery if anything breaks down. Fix Or Repair Daily is an apt acronym for Ford. You can own anything Ford makes in a used vehicle after only two model years. And you can do it easily. Why is that? Because people who can afford new cars know Fords are cheaper to buy but don't last long before they start to cost you money.
I currently own a 2004 Kia Spectra and I love it. Korean/Japanese brands are reasonably dependable and affordable.
Lots of good cars out there. And lots of just okay cars too.

9. UltimateAsoka (926) | 3 months ago | Well i would for a Toyota,Honda,Hyundai,Nissan. The reason is at that budget, most of the cars would have less life.So to make maximum out of the remianing life, i would go for a good mileage car, than others.Even i told the same to my friend and he did the same and bought a honda civic and now rates as the best decision.Besides it is always nice to save money in this age of recession. Thanks!

sacmom (5825) | 3 months ago | I'd love nothing more than to be able to save the money instead of having to get a vehicle. But with a family of four out in the country, it's kind of a necessity!
