Window shopping-----is it typical of females? |
I went out yesterday to a famous shopping area. This place is renowned for the umpteen things avilable and also for the exorbitant prices. It has evolved a reputation too that we have to bargain, quoting half the price that the vendor quotes. Now I am not too good at this though I did manage the show yesterday by picking a few odd little items. But most of it was window shopping, that would have frustrated the lives out of shopkeepers. So., we were joking at home that the moment a shopkeeper sees me, he is is going to be all set to drive me out[ short of a whip in hand]. I felt that this window shopping may be a typically female characeristic.Or do men also do this? Please do share your shopping experiences.

2. joy_evaldez (211) | 1 month ago | I think generally window shopping is for woman. Actually 'shopping' itself is for woman. We really like to buy things for ourself but sometimes we just want to satisfy our eyes if our budget will not allow us to buy anything at all. Also, we tend to weigh things out, which one is better and just taking note of those prices, colors and variants before we decide which one to buy.

msfrancisco9369 (1731) | 1 month ago | Hi Joy,
...a typical kind of window shopper. I do the same thing too. My husband is so amaze when he's with me doing my window shopping--he admired how patient i am to be so meticulous and detailed in my shopping.

joy_evaldez (211) | 1 month ago | Hahaha. You must read the email about the difference of man and woman on shopping. The fellow put an illustration of the difference. He lay-out the floor plan of a mall and put a woman's and man's track on it. You will see that woman will tend to visit each stall/boutique before heading the exit door while man only visit 2 stalls. Quite hilarious but very good interpretation of our behaviour.

kalav56 (1887) | 1 month ago | Joy evaldez; there was also another email thatlisted out a number of things and the last statement in this was that " man invented money;woman invented shopping.' After that woman has stopped inventing because she is still shopping.

angelajoy (957) | 1 month ago | My boyfriend is a bit different from other guys because he likes shopping too. Whenever he goes shopping, he mostly buys shoes or clothes. But he is not that different from other guys because although he likes shopping, he still doesn't like shopping as much as women do. When I take him with me when I'm shopping, although he's very patient he still gets bored sometimes. He doesn't tell me this, but I could tell that he's tired of shopping when he just points randomly at stuff and tells me that they look good. I think he does this to convince me to buy already so that we can go home.

kalav56 (1887) | 1 month ago | Very true. Now I dont take my husband along at all for shopping.I can just not look at things in peace because there would be sense of guilt within me thatI have dragged him along for something thta he hates. In fact to put it correctly, he flatly refuses to come out.
| |
joy_evaldez (211) | 1 month ago | Yes indeed. I am more comfortable shopping with my female friends rather than my husband. He tends to get bored and always advised me to buy already the first one I see. It's not my way as I want to survey first few stalls before deciding which to buy. Though there are some guys who loves shopping like us women, it is very seldom and their patience is not that long.

| 3. rhoseiteki (10) | 1 month ago | most women like love to window shop, for the fact that it's free and there's nothing wrong just looking around thinking what might be a good buy. But it's very rare for men to do window shopping. like my husband, he really hates window shopping.

4. sudiptacallingu (7064) | 1 month ago | From what I saw during my recent shopping adventures for Durga Puja, men these days are no less window shoppers! Wherever I went, I saw hordes of young men with girlfriends in tow, browsing thru rows of shops and stacks of goods! Basically I think it’s the young guys these days who are more into window shopping…actually window shopping gives the youth another opportunity to spend some time with each other LOL…BUT men (as with family) are not big window shoppers. They feel it’s a waste of time (as if chatting with friends and spending hours at the pub is not!) while we women know and appreciate the value of money (even if its earned by our hubbies) so we take care to chose thoroughly what we buy…*sigh*…men will never appreciate us Kala

| 5. TreeMarie84 (50) | 1 month ago | I think it's mainly females who window shop, I don't see many men do it. Most men I know hate shopping for food at the grocery store, never mind buying clothes or something else at a mall or other place.

kalav56 (1887) | 1 month ago | Men are very focused and businesslike when it comes to shopping. It si any day better to seek female company for shopping. This is my observation.

kalav56 (1887) | 1 month ago | That is precisely what I too do sometimes abbypringles. Only when I go to a distant place and it is troublesome to get back again I would make a firm decision and buy things.

kalav56 (1887) | 1 month ago | 'buy worthy' --you have made the point very clearly.True, we do feel bad if we buy some junk and it is lying useless at home and collecting dust.It would have been an impulse buy. That is why I think so hard before buying [but still would look around and frustrate those poor things. The saving grace and redeeming feature in my own self is thta I wont keep asking them too many questions.

7. ybong007 (848) | 1 month ago | I like window shopping too, I like to see new things but I don't really like to own them and I can't afford most of them anyway LOL. For me, window shopping is a way for me to get over the cravings of owning a certain thing. However, there are things that I really like that I just go straight to the shop and buy it outright without even comparing prices, which causes me trouble with my wife sometimes. Cheers!

| |
kalav56 (1887) | 1 month ago | Well I too do not compare prices all the time .It is not always possible. And it is commendable that you are satisfied with window shopping when you cannot afford them.I feel window shopping is equal fun.

8. msfrancisco9369 (1731) | 1 month ago | Nowadays, i think window shoppping is not only a characteristic of female but for both sexes. I can see lots of men doing it too--hopping from one store or stall to another, comparing prices and negotiating for discounts too. I find it cute seeing them doing the same as i do.
Male or female---let's enjoy be wise enough with our shopping, let's enjoy window shopping!

9. paula27661 (5132) | 1 month ago | I think that men tend to be more practical, they generally know what they are going to buy, they go into the store they look for the item, they purchase it and they leave. Of course not all men are the same but that is my experience with my husband. If I want to browse around and window shop which I love to do because that is how I get Christmas and birthday ideas, I am better off going on my own otherwise there will be arguments!
| |
| |
kalav56 (1887) | 1 month ago | Spot on Paula! Now I too do the same thing; it is much more peaceful this way.If we have time in our hands we can browse around as long as we want without feeling fettered and sometimes guilty for dragging an uninterested person along.

paula27661 (5132) | 1 month ago | I learnt that one fairly early on in the relationship! He stresses me out whenever he comes shopping with me, he huffs and puffs and always advises me to buy the first thing I come across so that we can leave and inevitably there is almost always a fight!
| |
kalav56 (1887) | 1 month ago | AHHHHHHH-- how can people be so similar! I would also find it a bit stressful and in fact ehre will be a niggling feeling of discomfort within me when he comes along and I linger too long ina shop.On rare occasions my husband used to come along and I would prepare him well beforehand thta I would take one hr in a particular shop.THere are occasions when I promised to pick upa saree in 5 min and I have fulfilled it too. Now I find it simpler to go alone or with sisinlaw.

10. thea09 (4154) | 1 month ago | Hi Kalav, I replied once and had the misfortune to lose it so now you're only getting half a response and no mention of window shopping.
But, I am so jealous of you for having the old haggling method, I could be the world expert in haggling whilst shopping in countries where this habit is expected and welcomed which it isn't here. I remember the delights of those souks and markets in Tunisia and Turkey where I was encouraged to haggle and perfected my method. He wants 100 and you start at 50, no start at 5. It is an art. when the vendor eventually runs after you and spits at the ground at your feet you know the deal is sealed at the right price. I'm so jealous, it's my favourite way to shop.
| |
| |
thea09 (4154) | 1 month ago | Maybe it's a bit different there but I've shopped in countries where it's a way of life and they are most excellent at getting much more than they ever expected from from foreign travellers. It's the sort of thing you spend a half hour at least over and one feels when the price is too insultingly low. But I start low 5-100 they come down to 90 - up to 7. I once bought a beautifu wooden chess set which had inlaid drawers in the board, many years ago in Tunisia for some ridiculous price like 10, then taking it back into the hotel another foreigner approached me as he too had bought one and wanted to tell me what a bargain he'd got for 100. He thought he'd done well.
So yes I window shop in town, I sometimes even enter the window althoug with a strict policy of not being allowed to buy as other more essential thhings are needed that that cute dress, but some shops have now employed rather irritating assistants who have been trained in some new method of latching onto your arm as if a shop lifter and following one round straightening all the items one has touched, most off putting.
| |
kalav56 (1887) | 1 month ago | What you have written in the last para must have been quite irritating. And it is sad that thta other foreigner had been ripped off like that. Thanks for the elaborate response thea.
| |
angelajoy (957) | 1 month ago | Yes, it is indeed irritating when shop attendants hound me when I'm looking at items for sale. It makes me feel like a thief. Whenever a shop assistant does this to me, I tell him or her to stop following me and I'll just ask for his or her help when I need it. Shop managers put them up to this. I don't know why managers want sales clerks to do this. For me, it doesn't help boost sales, and it even tends to drive customers away.
| |
kalav56 (1887) | 1 month ago | Agreed. THey are doing it to safeguard themselves but they have to use their discretion if they have to retain good cutomers.
| |
thea09 (4154) | 1 month ago | Oh it's a very new thing out here, I don't think for a minute they are thinking you are up to no good but have been told to do it as some kind of training policy but it only makes them surly and not at all helpful, they were much better before.
