Is it just me or did medical personnel lose their bed-side manner?

It is not only you...this is very common now.they just work for money and very very few really care about patients sincerely....as you said some ten years ago hospitals seems to be a place that heals people but things have turned up side down it has gone from bad to worse....

I'm so sorry you had to go through all this. Well, I don't know about the latest medical staff attitude because it's been a long time since I go to a hospital and hospitalized. But you are right; children especially might feel a bit insecure and scared and it would help to have a friendly face with some nice and encouraging words too..

There was a time when doctor was compared to God few years back because their only motto was to serve the people in pain. They did everything in their power to bring relief to those suffering pain or disease. Now-a-day, doctors have become money minded. They want to extract as much money from the patient as possible. They count on commissions they get for referring people to costly labs, prescribe costly meds. Time has changed a lot. A friend a mine went to his neighbour doctor in some emergency. The doctor turned him out saying that this (his home) is not a hospital. Take your wife to hospital. It does not mean that there is scarcity of good doctors. There are lots. We just have to spot.

I agree with you. A few months ago, my dad fainted and we brought him to the private hospital, but since the charges was too high, we have to transfer him to the public hospital. So, while the ambulance was waiting outside, dad was lying on the bed helplessly. He was very weak and he could not walk or even stand. We thought the hospital staff would help to carry him to move him to the ambulance bed, but instead they just watched him trying so hard to move to the other bed. Poor dad , we were so mad because we were told to wait outside and if they were not happy to do that, we could all go in and help him!!

There was also one incident that was so stupid of the doctors and nurses. The man was admitted because of broken leg. He was brought in on an emergency bed and I think they were really out of their minds when they asked him to move to the hospital bed by himself. He was screaming painfully and they just watched him!!

Earlier this year I had my baby girl born at home but afterwards I wouldn't stop bleeding. I lost two and a half liters of blood. My blood pressure went dangerously low and I kept fainting. My body had had enough and was trying to close down I think. I was taken off to hospital in an ambulance. I had the most horrible consultant come to see me. She said that I was probably going to die. She said such upsetting things that I couldn't stop shaking. I was in a high dependency room and much screaming was going on next door. It was terrifying. It took me eight weeks to recover my energy after that nightmare of a time. My darling little baby girl is now 4 months old and I am happy to still be alive.

All the ones me and hubby had were very niec and answered all questions byt then we werent kids and I drove them crazy not been in my room all the time they just didnt look outside for me lol

My brother was in 4 different hospitals when he was loosing his battle with cancer. I would say less than half of the staff were kind and the rest more or less acted like they really did not care. When i was growing up nurses did not make alot of money and if someone in school would say they wanted to be a nurse when they grew up it was because the sincerly had a desire to help people. Now nurses make ALOT of money(at least here in the USA) and I think about 75% of people pick that vocation for the pay they will get. Its sad.

I've had experience of our National Health Service from both sides over the last 18months. I have seen 4 courteous and very patient consultants who answered all my questions fully without rushing me to make decisions. The radiography staff, surgical team and specialist nurses were all brilliant.
On the other side.... I work as a Clinical Support worker on an acute medical ward which has 32 patients of which, maybe 10 are able to wash and go to the toilet without assistance & many are doubly incontinent and confused. This morning we struck lucky and had 4 qualified and 4 support workers to take care of them. On my last shift, there were 3 qualified and 2 support. The only time we sit down during our 8-hour shift is for a 15minute tea break and a 30minute meal break. Our patients do have to wait longer than we like for attention but we treat them all as individuals and with the most dignity that their situation allows. We have been spat at, kicked, slapped, punched and verbally abused in the most vile manner but I have never seen a member of staff lose their temper or be aggressive towards a patient. We understand that they are vulnerable, frightened and sick so we take a deep breath and get on with it. Yes, we do have a bit of a moan about people in the privacy of the staff rom. Its a coping strategy. I hope your daughters have a better experience if they ever have to be hospitalized again.

I am most happy to say that yes, I do, in fact, have a doctor that is friendly and takes the time to ask questions and actually listen to what the patient tells him. And if a test needs to be done, he'll write the request for them without any regard to the insurance companies. He has been kind to my son and extremely gentle when dealing with him which eased his mind and relieved his apprehensions and my son actually looks forward to going to the doctor when he is really sick. I applaud the good doctors of the world as I have been the patient of a few jerks.

Oh yes. I have definitely seen this. Whether it is because they are understaffed or had a bad day, I don't know. One would hope they would be especially kind to children. I have been lucky enough to have had some very good doctors when I have gone to the ER (I end up there once at least every couple of months). But then sometimes...I remember one doctor who was so mean, and so rough when examining me, that I told the nurse to get my discharge papers before he was complete with the tests (was in the ER with extreme pain). She asked why, and I actually referenced what you have brought up. I told her his bedside manner was so atrocious I couldn't stand to be near him.

Several years ago I was hospitalized for a week and the doctors were nice. But one of the nurses was downright cruel! She yanked out my IV when she was told to switch is to my other hand...it was awful.
