My old Betty Crocker Cookbook had seen better days. I have had it for about 25 years and have tried many of the recipes. The cover fell off, some pages were missing, the pages that were favorite recipes were stained and torn. Although I have many cookbooks to choose from that one was my favorite.

Well this year I decided I needed a new one and purchased it when it went on sale. I love the way the new one lays flat when you have it open. There is no need to weight the pages down or prop it up so it can be read while you are viewing the recipe. To my surprise though I looked for my doughnut recipe in the new book and it wasn't there. Frantically I ran to the bookshelf in search of my old tattered book. Thankfully it was still there!

I whipped up a double batch of my favorite doughnut recipe. If you'd like the recipe send me a message and I will give it to you.

So, remember to check that old cookbook for your favorite recipes and copy them for safe keeping. Your next cookbook may not have the recipe you are so fond of!

My mum has got all her old cookbooks from when she was young, which is fortunate because she makes wonderful flapjacks and the recipe is from way back and of course mum's flapjack is the best in the world, naturally! Sadly I do not take after my mum in that respect in that I can't cook, and won't! I have no interest in cooking or baking, so sadly the cook books will not be passed down to me or if they are they will only gather dust and as I am the only child. Maybe when I get older I will appreciate cooking more? Who knows I might have inspiration in my 40s LOL! I remember thinking it was comical seeing all the old weights measures before they changed them over! Some recipe books are handed down from one generation to the next!

I don't own any of my own cookbooks, as I still live with my mom. But luckily she said she'd be giving her cookbooks to me when I move out, because she can't bake or cook anymore, not with her health problems. So the other day I decided to go through the really old ones, salvage the recipes I wanted to try [I wrote them down on note cards, as is tradition in my family, haha] and throw the old book away. It too, had seen better days. Luckily my mom helped, and told me which ones I used to like as a kid, and which ones nobody really enjoyed.

I have never made doughnuts. Though it sounds like it would be fun to try! I may go look up recipes to try for my boyfriend birthday in a couple months, as he's in LOVE with doughnuts [not more than me though, haha!] .

I am not much of a cook, but had that faithful Betty Crocker Cookbook that had seen its better days. My guess would be that my mother gave it to me since I remember her once making the comment that I never learned to cook since I "always had your nose in a book"......just NOT the cookbook!! Well, I made the mistake of throwing it away BEFORE buying a new one, but didn't buy one, but know there are recipes in it that I miss and wish, still that I had today. What I have found sometimes helps me, is to go to the internet to find a recipe. Progress!! lol

Hi Butterfly,

I know what you mean.. I had a Betty Crocker cook book given to me as a wedding present in 1968.. I had it all the way up into the 90s... and it was the kind in the loose leaf style.. you could open it up and it would lay flat... you could take a page out and put it back when you want to... when I moved from my home after my divorce (I lost the house) .. I guess the cookbook got lost... the new cookbooks are fine... but that cookbook helped me learn how to cook.. and my dad would use it all the time when he was alive.. because he baked pies and loved to cook.

I miss that cookbook.. if I ever see another one like it, I will buy it for sure.

I love the way your cookbooks start to get once you've really started to use them. The little stains on your favorite recipes are my favorite things to see, because they remind me of all the yummy things that I made! I haven't thrown a cookbook out yet, and don't intend to. Throw away all of those happy memories, as well as the money I spent on it? No thank you!

I collect cookbooks. I have an old Betty Crocker book, along with my most recent gift from my best friend, a 1943 Fannie Merritt Farmer "The Boston Cooking School Cook Book". It has some recipes that the previous owner clipped and taped inside the cover.

I have cook books from as far back as 1925 and 1933. It's amazing how ofter I refer to those books for information. I also have another cookbook that has old recipes in it but it is a newer publication date. It has a wonderful oatmeal cookie recipe that doesn't use flour.

Also nestled (actually squeezed into)my cookbook bookcase is my Mom's cookbook with recipes that date back to 1945, which I still use today. None of the books will ever get donated or removed from the collection!!! My daughter tried to grab a couple of them and haul them away when she was here...I about strung her up when I caught her! lol

What is the publication date of your old Betty Crocker cookbook? I have an extra one from 1983...

I got my Betty Crocker Cookbook for a Christmas gift from my mother-in-law to be on Christmas 1970 so that makes my book 39 years old and I am still using it. My book is a spiral type and lays down flat. So as I still use many of the recipes I will probably used until it (or I )completely falls apart and of no use any more! LOL

Hi, I've never come across a Betty Crocker cookbook but it sounds as though it would be the equivalent of the English Mrs Beeton. The oldest recipes which I have are in the Little House on the Prairie cook book.
