Did you know that Social Security will only issue you four cards in a year?

Not only that, they will only give you ten in your lifetime. I learned that from my receipt that I got today. I cannot find my Social Security Card. I know I had it two months ago, but it is no where to be found, so I took my driver's license to the Social Security Office that manages my area. I will have a new card in one to two weeks. This is my fourth one, ever.

Really? I never knew that. It seems rather strange that they only issue 10 in a lifetime. I know that we should be careful with our SS card, but to put such a limit on it seems rather ridiculous, seeing as it is a rather important card for people to have. Not to mention we do have to pay for it, so it's not like they're losing out when printing out new ones. Or are they? Still, it doesn't seem right to set a limit on SS cards... Fortunately I've never lost any. I did have to get a new one though when I got married back in '95, so I am on my second one now. I wonder if that'll count towards my total count? Or does that only apply to lost cards that have to be replaced? Thanks for this bit of information GardenGerty. It was interesting to say the least. Happy mylotting!

You do not pay for the new card. I think the limits are fairly new, as I did not hear about it when I got married the second time. I believe that it is intended to slow down identity theft. The card itself says that you should not carry it, but keep it safe. I am sure mine is safe, I just do not know where.

Gee, I never knew that before, or would have even thought of them setting limits on how many they issue over the years to a person. I've never lost one ever, but I did have to get one with a name change when I got married. Maybe they do that because of fraud and social security numbers and stuff like that. Thinking on it, it might be a good idea if, like a drivers license, they had a person's picture on it to prevent fraudulent use of a ss#. Thanks for the info, learn somethin new every day lol.

I am thinking that this may be a new thing, as I have had to change cards for two different marriages, and never knew it before today. It probably is as a result of all the fraud.

Must be something new, I think I have only replaced mine once or twice! Once cause it was in my purse and I lost it in a car wreck. I don't carry a purse any more because of it. I do everything with my credit card then pay off my credit card with the next statement, so I never pay interest. All I cary is my drivers license and credit card. I have lost my license 2x's this month, found it, so now I am not carring it (I locked it in my glove compartment with my proof of insurance and registration. I do this because when I am shopping I start looking at something or reading something and then walk away from my cart. Sometimes I can't get the cart through the aisle because there are so many people so I just park it and go get what I want. We have had a lot of 'parking lot robberies' here and purses are getting stolen when people are putting stuff in the car so it really is a lot safer.

I prefer not to carry a purse, especially if it is crowded. I usually carry a check book or debit card. I can see where you could lose stuff in an accident.

I quit using the checkbook when they started running the checks through the register and handing them back to you. Somehow coping my check into their register just really turned me off! So only credit card. Right now I couldnt' tell you where my SS card is. I have it put up safe somewhere and if I needed it I would be really hunting. I wouldn't carry it because except for getting hired in somewhere you don't need it.

The provident fund is more like Social Security, except we cannot withdraw it all at once. We contribute, and so does the employer.

We have one similar to that but not all elderly people benefits from it and when you have working children you won't qualify for this aid. It is only meant for the hardcore poor. It is very small amount of RM120.00 per month for each recipient and it can hardly cover a month's food bills. Aids are also given to handicapped people and single mothers. Salaries are deducted to be deposited to our pension scheme called Employees Provident fund. 9% will be deducted from employees salary and employers contribute 11% to the fund every month. When we reach 55 years old we can withdraw all the money from this fund for our old age expenses.

hi GardenGerty Ireally did not know that, but maybe I did subconsciously know that as I have been pretty careful with my card. I remember my panic when I had that terrible fall and smashed the bones in my shoulder, when I was admitted to my hospital room of course they asked for my social security card, my hmo card, and I dont remember what all, and the social worker handed me my handbag. then for some reason I was having a hard time searching my billfold with my right hand which was patently silly as I am right handed, imagine my relief when I finally found my Social Security card, I mean I had just been helped to undress, was in severe pain with a fractured shoulder, and had not even had a pain shot yet, and here was this woman demanding all the paper work immediately. In fact they had not yet dressed the wounds on my knees or the cut on my left arm but she needed that paperwork right now. Did she really think in my condition I was going to run out of the hospital and not pay the bills or have my insurance rather pay them? It seemed silly then and to me now three years later it still seems silly. I was there for four days so if she had waited a few hours til I was more pain free it would not really have hurt anything. I had worked as a nurses aid in hospitals the great part of my live so knew a few things about how hospitals work. and most of the time they wait until the next day to get your paperwork for paying the hospital and surgery and doctors.

They really are not supposed to ask for your Social Security Card, as it is not valid for ID, and it says on the card not to carry it. I would have been very angry to be treated that way, Hatley.

Hatley: Is it possible this woman who was demanding the paper work was following somebody else's orders? Even if she was, it's still pretty awful. Kathy.

Fourth one and counting. That is good to know. I think I have had four too because I had to have them reissue me a card when I remarried. Hope you don't need the card before the new one gets to you. I always hate that when i have to get a duplicate. Waiting is the hardest part.

This is my fourth, because I was married twice. I am ordering it just because I have a chance at some part time work. I do not know if they would take my tribal document. I discovered my card missing when I went to take the Census test, so I decided I needed to order one, in case I got hired.

Ya, they will want to have that fire if you get hired. What tribe are you a part of? How do you say that? I am cherokee. Not enough to have a document. About 1/16th or something I think.

I am part Choctaw. I am only microscopically part of the tribe, but they claim me. If you have a relative that was on the final Dawes role you can probably get tribal verification. I have not used the card except this time. On the other hand my sister and my niece and her daughter use the medical clinics. Do you know your family lineage? Can you trace it back to around 1907?

Good Morning..dear GG! Interesting info..but ONCE, only once I misplaced my SIN card (Social Insurance Number...same as your SSI)and the hoops...and horrendous expense I had to go thru to replace it...now means that I never carry it..NOR Birth Certificate with me. Replacing any form of governmental documents here in Canada is costly. I keep, SIN, Birth Certificate, Marraige Certificate, Divorce Certificate..and Passport in a virtually immovable locked box in my house. I would never...leave them in the Glove Compartment of my vehicle, as that is the first place theives target, when breaking into it. Here in B.C., Canada...we have an insurance document, with a registered number, that carries none of the insurer's pertinent information...e.g., Driver's License number, address or phone number....so there is NO benefit of stealing that document! Take care and Cheers!

I will have to write a discussion about my birth certificate. I learned something interesting when I had to get it to apply for my Tribal membership.

Looking forward to that discussion, GG, as the Federal Government here in Canada, has me both born in 1946 and 1947, and no matter how long I have tried to get the right info documented...I can't seem, too! therefore, in reality I can apply for OAP (Old Age Pension) a year early...as I was really born in '47...LOL! Take care and Cheers!

Wow, no, I had no idea, nor do I have any idea where mine is. I know I had to get a new one when I got married (over 4 decades ago) and another one got lost or stolen, so I think I am only on my third. Not sure, though. So at this rate I shouldn't use up more that half of my allotted number. Hah! I wonder what people do who get divorced and remarried a whole bunch of times. I believe that the world record for the most marriages was held by two American women who were married 23 and 24 times, respectively. But maybe they did not need social security cards...something to ponder, I guess.

I was wondering about the many marriages myself. Maybe they kept their own name a lot of times. I do not know if you have to show it when you get benefits, just know you have to have it for jobs. I know if you claim benefits for minors you have to have their cards. Probably does not apply for you now, right?

Did you not have one before you got married? Or did you not change it when you got married? When you have a name change you are supposed to send it in and get a new one.

It is easy to get the new one. Of course if he does not have to get a new job, he would not need it. Or if he does not need to apply for benefits. The office is just off of 30th, but I am sure you know that.

I didn't know that! I had to get a new card about 15 years ago. (Oh God, has it been that long?!) I thought that my SS# was good no matter what my last name was but was dealt a rude awakening then, after I'd been married for about 8 years. No end to the red tape, changing my name after 8 years of marriage--I had filed for a name change but somebody didn't do their job. What a hassle!!! Hey, at least I have 9 more! My youngest son was told that a Mexican National owned his number when I tried to get him a passport years ago. Then when we went through all the paperwork it somehow turned out that his number was his, after all. Made me very suspicious of government efficiency (which is a JOKE!) or immigration policies (which is also a JOKE!). I think maybe the Mexican national will get my son's social security benefits--if they are still solvent when he retires in 2054.

Hi, GardenGerty. No. I had no idea about this. I am glad that I know. I will make sure that I will not lose these. I hope that I will not. I did lost my wallet many of years ago, and I had to order a new Social Security card. This was when I was about 16 years old. Till this day, I don't know what happened to my wallet that I lost. I hope that you will not have to order anymore cards being that you are on your fourth one.

Im so sorry you misplaced your card. Well you know what its like, one day, when you least expect it, it'll turn up!! I got mine when I turned 16 and I never had to use it EVER. I only give out my number whenever they need to have it. I know its still where I put it as I saw it last week. Its still in the original envelope it came in haha. I have NO idea if we have a certain amount of card that can be issues here in Canada. BUT, what I need to find out now is .....my birth certificate...I dont even know if I have one!!! I'll be doing some searching next week!!
