Last week I traveled to see my daughter

She lives about six hundred miles north of me. When we had gone about two hundred miles north, I began noticing the trees changing color. The leaves are now red and yellow and brown and then of course there are still all shades of green. After we were there a few days, I kept thinking I heard a gentle rain outdoors, but I was wrong. Where she lives the leaves are falling, and it really sounds neat. You then see everyone out sweeping the leaves off their drives or raking and gathering them in their yards. I wonder how many of you have changing seasons like this? Not even everyone in the United States experiences four seasons, and I think I should not assume that others do either. So we are at summer, headed into fall or autumn. After that comes winter which would be our cold season, sometimes with snow and lots of blowing wind. Spring will follow that, when the leaves will come back on the trees and we will plant gardens and figure on rain for our crops. I enjoyed seeing how the seasons are going. Most of our leaves where I live are still green and very few are falling.

I am in California and see seasons change only in certain parts of town lol. I have been here so long I don't know how it would be to live where there are 4 seasons. I enjoy the sunshine that California has most of the year and if I want snow it's just a few hours drive into the mountains.
We have been thinking of moving to Nevada or Idaho..but I am a little concerned about the dreary weather...I like the sun, so it's hard to decide..

When I was married the first time my husband was in the Navy stationed in San Diego. I had just been at college here where I live now. We have had some really cold winters. So I had to laugh when people would call the 40 and fifty degree weather cold and wear heavy coats and knit hats. I think Idaho would be pretty cold, Nevada probably not so much, but I am not sure. I just hear about places like Las Vegas and the deserts. I think you would miss the nearness of the ocean.

I lived in SanDiego for about a year.
Loved the city! Now I'm closer to LA...and California is not looking as good to me as it did years ago..
I haven't been to the beach except in traveling north. My kids are grown so I don't go anymore and I don't sun tan. In fact I like swimming on a warm night..in a pool
I guess I am looking for another environment. Lake Tahoe is beautiful.

Things do change. I love indoor pools, better for your skin and you can use them year around. We do have lakes we visit, but I have never had the patience for tanning.

Yep, we got the falling leaves all right, I spent I don't know how long scooping them out of the pool today so we could take it down..Not an easy task when the net is torn up in a couple places..

No, I think I remember my mom talking about it. My grandparents had lots of trees on their property, but they were mostly oaks.

Hi GG,
That must have been a beautiful trip to take. I love driving and looking around at all the pretty scenery, especially in the fall.
Living in Ohio, yes I do see all the seasons although they are not the same anymore. I remember when I was little, there actually was four seasons. Now it seems winter has taken over and lasts the longest here. No fun. We go from winter almost directly into summer, not much spring at all. I use to love the spring the best with it bringing new life to everything.
As far as I'm concerned, it can stop snowing right after the holidays, lol! Those months of January, February, March, April and May seem to keep winter around a bit too long for me now, with a short summer. But I do love the holidays from Halloween through New Years, lots of excitement going on and plenty to do.

The past two springs have seemed short. I have traveled both last fall and this fall and the color is great. I do believe I need to make the trips shorter, though, as I really miss my own bed. Summer was way too long this year. I find it harder to deal with than winter.

@Kashmere. I would be willing to bet that since you appear to have lived where you do now that you also grew up there, too. As children, we tend to remember the good times, and forget the bad times as well. I grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We had four distinctly different seasons every year. Winter, as you can probably imagine, seems to me that it was the longest season of the year, and my most welcome one. I did enjoy Summer, too. In the Winter I could go hunting, ice fishing and just skiing on the snow. Summer was spent fishing and water skiing. You can see by these activities that I enjoy the outdoors as much as anyone could. That is one reason that I would be ecstatic if my wife would suddenly say, "Let's move to Crystal Falls and enjoy our retirement." I really doubt that this would ever happen, though. Kansas isn't really so bad, though. I really do enjoy it here as long as she is with me. I guess we will stay.

Hi GG,
I can't but help loving spring and summer more than anything. I think it's because I can open the windows and leave them open the majority of the time. I love seeing the buds open up on the trees and the new flowers just peeking out, even the color of the grass changes. I didn't mind the winter when I was a bit younger, but now it just makes me miserable. Maybe when I get a car I'll feel better because I can get out more. Hugs....
Hi finlander60,
You are so correct! Yes, I did live here all my life, and we too had 4 distinctive seasons which has changed drastically over the years. Maybe I wouldn't pay attention to it, or even notice, if I didn't live here all my life. I just feel better in the spring and summer, moreso than in the fall and winter. Probably has to do with the darkness earlier, closed windows, can't hear the birds chirping, can't see the grass, leaves, flowers anymore....that depresses me. I use to love the winter when I was younger and full of vigor, lol! I use to ice skate all the time, make snowmen, have snowball fights, and just plain enjoyed myself. Summer was fishing, camping, swimming, and fun times late at night just sitting outside.
As long as you have your wife, life is good, no matter where you are. I'm only left with my 2 daughters now and grandchildren, so that makes me very happy, and they try to keep me busy. I hope some day your dream will come true, and you'll be living at Crystal Falls happily ever after. Sounds like you have a wonderful life and relationship which I find wonderful.

I live in Canada, and despite a very warm October, our leaves are turning very beautiful to watch, but where I live we have a little "forest"in the back and big trees in the front,so there is a carpet of dry leaves to deal with every day.I use the lawnmower and the leaf blower/vacuum once a week till all is gone...Making a lot of compost!!!It might be very beautiful, but it also depresses me a little, because when they are gone, the dreary weather starts, with cold, rain, then SNOW.... This year they are forecasting a lot of it in January and February.

As you know, I am in Austin, Texas and we have had one hideous summer. It is finally beginning to cool down. The nights have gotten beautiful. We had rain yesterday and today for the first time in months.
We have a mild change of color, nowhere as beautiful as in other areas of the country, but still there is some change. For us, the fall brings relief from the heat and it is such a blessing. October is usually nice and November is usually beautiful.
I am glad that you had a wonderful visit with your daughter.

I've always enjoyed looking at pictures of autumn---I distinctly remember seeing a photo of an autumn scene as a child and asking an elderly if such a place existed. It seemed very beautiful. It must've been great to witness that when you visited your daughter.
I'm in the Philippines where we only have the dry and wet seasons. Summer starts around March and ends in June, and is scorchingly hot. July marks the start of the rainy season and it lasts sometimes up to October or November. We have lots of typhoons and floods. Come December, rain is rare and the weather is cool. It will continue to be dry and cool until February.

It would be great if you could visit the Philippines someday! I am rather proud of how beautiful our islands are. I'm actually making it a point to be able to travel all over the Philippines before I dream of going to other countries. Best visit in the summer (bring lots of sunscreen) or in the dry and cool period of December-February.

I like travelling by road as we can enjoy the sceneries while we are travelling. Coming from a tropical country, our trees remain evergreen the whole year round. Those who are in four seasoned countries are lucky as they get to enjoy different scenarios at every change of seasons.

Your daughter lives a long way north from you and it must have been lovely for you to visit her. This season is called fall in North America. In my home country we call it autumn. We have crispy golden and brown leaves on the ground right now. We have winter next the coldest season. Then comes spring time in March when the new leaves grow on the trees.

We use fall and autumn pretty interchangeably, actually. I do not know who decided to use fall as the name of the season, but it is easier for children to spell. Yes, where my daughter lives they can accumulate enough snow that it gets piled as high as tall fences and roofs. There are laws requiring that they keep their sidewalks clear. Usually we do not drift that much, but we have had power outages from ice on occasion. I know you have traveled to several countries, and I am sure you have enjoyed the seasonal changes when you do.

In my home country the weather is meant to hot in the summer. I traveled to Belize and they said they had a cold patch of weather. I thought they have to be joking because to find out about cold weather they should visit my home country in the winter. I send to slip over in snow but one winter I did visit Switzerland and Austria. I found the air as cold as ice. I think fall is a pretty season with the fallen leaves but it is too cold for me.

The season is changing, that is sure. Here the most noticeable thing is that lawns and especially our golf course which got dry and brown in the hottest summer months are starting to get a bit of green back in them! We don't have a lot of trees down here, but the mountains are near, and we would see some color if we drove up a few miles.

In my part of Australia, we do not really have 4 seasons. Winters are quiet mild and dry and the summers are hot and humid with lots of rain. The spring does bring with it a start to the summer storm season and everything starts growing rapidly once more after staying dormant over the winter. At this time of year, you get a mix of cool winter days and hot summer type days, but often it is not a gradual thing. It just seems to change pretty quickly.
In the autumn it is similar to the transitioning in spring, but in reverse. You can still get summer type days long into autumn, but the weather dries out and you get lots of sunshine with great temperatures. It is my favourite time of the year weather wise here.
We do not have any deciduous trees in this part of Australia except for small pockets of areas that get cooler such as in the mountains where people have planted them in their gardens. There are no native plants that I know of that drop leaves in Autumn, so we do not get that amazing colour change in the scenery.

I mostly just think of eucalyptus in your country, and wonder if it would grow here. I guess you do not have many of the types of fruit trees I am used to, as they all require the cold to form blooms. So what kinds of things do you grow?

Eucalyptus trees are all over California. I saw them in LA and San Francisco. Apparently they are even a bit of a pest over there!
Australia is such a large country with very diverse climates, so pretty much any type of plant can be grown here somewhere. Down south in the colder climates the main fruits they grow are stone fruits, but they will not grow here. Most tropical fruits are grown around here, but some will not grow as it does get cool at night in winter time. Bananas and mangoes are probably the most common fruits found in this part of Australia. Paw Paw (Papaya) are also common in many backyards. Plus Macadamia nuts of course!

You experienced summer and autumn a day.

That is a lovely piece of poetry. I had not thought much about what your country might look like in the fall, not sure what kinds of trees you have. We have oak, maple, ash, and many others. I think oak and maple have the best colors. I have heard many people talk about how crowded the world is, but near where I live there is plenty of room for trees and animals, even around the outside of the bigger cities.

The leaves are changing here as well. Though I've been told 5-6hrs north of here they've already hit their peak in colors.
I'm not even ready nor do I want to think about the cold and blowing snow that comes with winter. And worse than the snow the steep utility bill to keep us from freezing all winter.

Some years we have a lot of snow, others we do not. I have a huge Victorian style house, but we do not heat the upstairs very much at all. We put electric mattress pads on the beds and it keeps us warm to sleep. We put our utility bills on a budget and pay pretty evenly all year.

I love living again in a place with 4 seasons! I love hearing the leaves skittering along the street and sidewalks and feeling them fall on me as I read under the tree in my back yard. They are beautiful here right now!
The good thing about 4 seasons is that just when you're tired of the one you're in, it changes.
