Onions and Garlic? - Yes or No

I know that the majority of people here on MyLot like raw onions. My husband and I, however, are in the minority. We cannot stand the smell, taste or texture of a raw onion. Some people add raw onions to everything they eat and cook...not us! As far as cooked onions and also garlic go, we like them in moderation. How about you? Do you put onions on and in everything you eat and cook? What about garlic?

@LadyDuck I've never heard of squeezing garlic on foods. That sounds interesting.

I love garlic and onions. Of course, it's kind of a given as I am part Italian. I don't use it in everything I cook but I do use a lot of both in my various dishes. Both garlic and onions are beneficial and good for your heart. The huge amount of garlic we ate when I was growing up helped save my father's life when he had his heart attack.
Onions will sweeten up and have their strength lessen if you peel them, slice them, and have them covered in water for about 24 hours. I learned that from a cooking show that I watched when I was growing up (I took over doing the cooking when I was 12. My parents expected a disaster and horrible meals, they were surprised when I served them gourmet meals that were cooked to perfection.). I went through a LOT of raw garlic and onions when I started cooking way back when I was 12.

@BearArtistLady When I started cooking meals at home my parents went out to eat less often! lololol My husband's family is German. I got a couple of good recipes from his mother.

@LindaOHio My mom was a pretty good cook, but when I stepped in and took over doing the cooking, she jumped at the chance to kick back and retire from doing that kind of housework. I really didn't mind doing the cooking, in fact it gave me the chance to let both of my parents know when they made me unhappy or angry. When they got on my bad side, I would fix the meals whichever way was the worst. If it was awful over cooked, they would get it that way, if it was worse under cooked that was the way it was served. They reached the point that they made sure that they kept me happy.
I knew their preferences so I would either find or make up recipes that sounded good and also tasted wonderful. I did hear from Mom that after I moved out, the stuff she fixed was horrible and very often both of them would wind up throwing the results of her cooking was tossed out for the wild animals to eat. Very often the wild animals wouldn't eat the stuff either. They bought a bigger freezer to hold the TV dinners that they bought out of self-preservation. I was welcomed with open arms when I came home for a few days, as long as I brought along the fixings for my gourmet meals.
So much for Father being from Italian background; and Mom being from German parents.

The smell and taste of Carmelized onions are 100% better than raw onions. Garlic can be an acquired taste. But if done corrected adding garlic to certain dishes can really make them so much better. I don't put onions in everything because my grandson doesn't like them.

We eat lots of onions here. We put them in almost everything, also we eat raw onion with our meals, they are tasty.
Though we don't use ginger in the dishes but prefer to put it in the tea. We don't like anything made with onion.
Edited: ginger as garlic

I lvoe both and used to eat them quite often, However with rising prices I do not buy any, Even with my next grocery order if I want bananas which I would like after a long time of not having any they cost 18 cents each and a garlic bulb would be 0.53 cents so I just get what I can afford,

I love onions any which way but for garlic I prefer it sauteed. Yesterday in the supermarket I saw for the first time elephant garlic. It's huge compared to the regular one and it said it's milder and sweeter. I was tempted to buy it to try but I didn't like its quality.

I prefer onions cooked (nothing like the smell of sautéing onions) but will eat raw ones too. I don't mind raw on salads (red is best) or a burger.
Garlic can add so pizzaz to food items. I love a nice slice of garlic bread with my spaghetti

I like raw onions with curd as it keeps my gut cool. Many Indian dishes need raw onions like chat, dosa, salad etc.
