Dogs were domesticated over 15,000 years ago by the hunter-gatherers; and the dog is the direct descendant of the wolf. There are approximately 450 breeds of dogs and between 700-987 million dogs in the world.
Recently the domestication of cats was found to be around 7500 B.C. in western Asia...not in Egypt as originally thought. There are approximately 60 breeds of cats. In 2021 there were approximately 220 million cats owned and 480 million stray cats in the world.
We have always had dogs of the Spitz breeds. We've had 2 Norwegian Elkhounds, 2 Norwegian Buhunds and 2 Pomeranians.
Do you prefer dogs or cats or both? Do you have a dog or cat or both? What breed/s of dogs/cats do you have?

@LindaOHio I had a very bad experience with a dog when I was 4 years old. I do not trust dogs anymore.

@LadyDuck That's a real shame. We have had wonderful dogs over the past 50 years or so.

As a child, I had a farm cat named Nicky. He was a solid black tom.
Now, I'm allergic to furbabies so I own fishies.

@LindaOHio I've had no trouble with my tank. Once in six months I need to do a 1/2 water change and I scrape algae off the walls if any has grown there and off the floor. (Usually the floor is all I need to scrape down.) Guppies live between two and three years and corydoras catfish live up to seven years.

@DaddyEvil I'm glad you've had good luck with your tank.

We used to have fish. It was a pain keeping the tank clean; and the fish kept dying.

I have had cats all of my adult life since I went to Latvia. I also love dogs but never thought to own one, When we lived in Latvia we had neighbors with dogs all around us and one next door a Rotweiller named Toro who seemed to be friends with our cat Sid. That is Toro in the photo probably looking for Sid through the mesh,

@LindaOHio at times it was rather amusing. SId would be lying on the outside window sill of the living room opposite the neighbor's house and Toro would be lying by the fence and I would hear meow and bark as if they were having a conversation

@LindaOHio For having such short legs, they are actually quite chunky and heavy.

Growing up we first had dogs and later added a cat to the mix. I liked having both. Dogs are great companions and cats are curious and funny. I would be more of a cat person now as I notice the neighbors walking their dogs in this cold or rainy weather. That's not for me. Dogs require more attention while cats are more independent.

We luckily have a big fenced in back yard. We could just open the door and let the dogs out.

I have never had cats...so I cannot say whether I like them around or not...I think it was Maluse who said cats can walk in the loo so...when we are doing our business ... no privacy...the dogs we had were pretty dignified...so to that extent...I guess I prefer dogs...for now.

We have about 3/4 of an acre fenced in. We just opened up the back door and out they went! The only problem was Ice who got under the fence EVERY time we let him out. That's why we had to surrender the two Pomeranians.

I love cats. I have 4 of them. I have a bombay cat, a ginger cat, a tuxedo cat, and a tortoiseshell cat. I am scared of dogs.

I could handle cats except for two things -- the litter boxes and them walking on the counters.

@LindaOHio It is a necessary evil. The unfortunate part, at least as to the walking on counters, is that the usual response from a scolded cat is "eff you." lol

@CarolDM Thanks for the update. I know how special everyone's fur babies are to them...and I worry about Brendel especially.

@LindaOHio They are doing fine. Enjoying their heating pads. Napping a lot on these cold days. Brendel is still enjoying her baby food each day and a few treats. Holding her own as long as I give her lots of attention. Thanks for asking about them.

@MommyOfEli2013 Depends on the cat; and you don't know what you're getting when they're kittens!

Currently I have one dog that is a Maltese. She's adorable and has a great personality (of course I'm partial)
When my children were growing up we always had cats
