Reliving my Epinions days: The Horse reviews Trader Joe's pasta

I bought some pasta at Trader Joe's the other day. It is called Spinach Tortellini, and the cost was $2.00. It is described (on the package) as "tortellini stuffed with spinach and ricotta, mozzarella and parmesan cheese." The word "stuffed" drew me in. I love spinach, and I love cheese. To prepare it, all I had to do was boil it up. I have had it twice now, with olive oil and a bit of extra Parmesan sprinkled on top. The good is that it tasted fine and filled me up. I will get four light lunches out of one package, at a cost of fifty cents per lunch, plus a touch of olive oil and Parmesan cheese. The not so good is that I could barely taste the spinach and cheeses inside. "Stuffed" is an overstatement. "Slightly infused" might be more accurate. Overall, a reasonable "fill you up" snack or light lunch. But nothing to write home about. I have done it! A product review, just like in the good old days of Epinions. I am flooded with pleasant memories!

We bought some frozen tortellini a couple of weeks ago... It was delicious. It was on special at Walmart.

@DaddyEvil I like turkey pot pies. I'm not sure I'd like tortellini stuffed with ground beef. But I may grab a pot pie or two on my next grocery outing.

I also like spinach and many kinds of cheese. But, did you know that there are several spinach-like greens that are yummy? There are turnip greens and collard greens just to name two. You can find them canned or in the vegetable departments in many stores.

I enjoyed collard greens with my BBQ when I worked in Oakland. I may have had other greens too.

We call them "tortelloni" as they are bigger than tortellini and I fill them with spinach, ricotta and Parmesan NEVER mozzarella.

Are you saying tortelloni bigger than tortellini? The ones I had were about 1" long each.

@TheHorse Tortellini are very small, ALWAYS filled with meat and usually cooked in broth. Tortelloni are bigger (those in the photo are tortelloni) and can be filled with many different ingredients, the most common ricotta and spinach. I make my own tortellini (that you can see in the photo) the size is about half inch.

@LadyDuck That looks like what I had. I was going to give you a "hard time" if you didn't tell me how big they are.

That looks good and for 50 cents a serving, the overstatement seems acceptable.

@TheHorse I do, too. In fact, I just went to Sacramento recently, it's the capital of your country, and petitioned to rename The San Andreas Fault the Bush Fault.

Tortellini is generally tasty. Yours sure didn't cost much. I paid at least twice that much for frozen at Safeway.

Yours could have been a bigger bag. Because it's cheap, I may get some of this once every few months.

Most of those pastas they sell are really quite good. We have tried quite a few and the price is certainly right too.

It was a good cheap meal at least. We don't have Trader Joe's here. Maybe I should do a product review.

I may do another when I can't think of anything else to write about. Tonight I wrote about gas prices because I was too tired and lazy to do anything else.

I've never tried that. I've tried small tortellini that is shelved in the same place as the pasta. It's pretty good.
