I set my house on fire.

Hello, mylotters. I am writing from Claudia´s house after I took a shower and washed my hair. Yes, I set my house on fire. I placed a small pot with oil to heat because I wanted to fry some of those sweets I told you once. But while it was heating I decided to transplant one of my cacti. I entered through my bedroom´s glass door and I heard a crash. It could not be Luna. Robbers maybe? So I went to the kitchen. The pot and the stove were on fire with big flames! I run to the stove to turn off the gas, run to press every single button from the ADT alarm service and called my brother who lives nearby to ask him for an extinguisher. But he was at the seashore three hours away from my home. I called Claudia and she, too, was elsewhere but in Santiago. I called my neighbors so that they would call the firemen as I did not know at that moment what to do. Both of my neighbors called the firemen and soon one of them came with a chair so that I could sit on the sidewalk. 3 loud firemen noisy trucks soon came. I opened the house and they went in with big hoses. One of the firemen stayed with me and asked me my name and whether I was the owner of the house. The whole house stinks. And I don´t know if any of the food inside the kitchen can be saved, even the one inside the fridge. And I have to get an electrician as the fire caused a big electricity problem. On Saturday, Marco will go with an electrician (I´m keeping my fingers crossed) because the most important thing is to repair the electric system. Then later on, I will have to think again about the future. As I always said until a few years ago "what will I do when I grow up?" It seems that this fire is telling me something. My house will need a mayor repair and a big cleaning. Dixie is going abroad so I can´t count on her. As Scarlett O´Hare said in Gone with the wind “I’ll think about that tomorrow. Tomorrow is another day.” It has been for ages my favorite quote.

OH, NO!! I am so, so sorry, but I am VERY happy you are alive, and not burned to a crisp or worse!! Hopefully your children can help you over this big hurdle. I am glad you are safely at Claudia's. Sending you everything I have, good Karma, good thoughts, prayers, hugs...wish I did have that magic wand I've always wanted; I would be waving it over you!!

Oh that's very bad. It's surprising that the fire spread so much with a routine kind of activity you were doing. I hope that things get repaired quickly for you and at a reasonable cost. The stink would of course take time to go. Perhaps a lesson also for many of us to be alert with the different activities that we do in the kitchen and elsewhere at home.

Oh my goodness Marga, I am so sorry. I hope the food can be saved, even if it's hard if there is an electricity problem. At least you are well and I think that also Luna is well. Now you are shocked, wait until you can relax, then you come inside and examine what the real damages are. Weird that this exact accident happened to one of my neighbor exactly one month ago. Thank to the @TheSojourner for suggesting this post.

I think that most of the food can be saved. But that´s not that important. The big problems are the material damages in the house. I am hoping Marco can go tomorrow with an electrician to do some work.

Good thing it wasn’t more serious. The whole house could’ve burned down. My mom decided to make holodets (jellied meat) not long ago. It requires for the meat to cook for hours. She had turned it on and forgot about it. Left the house. Came back to a terrible smell. No fire thankfully but the pot was all burned along with what was inside. And she couldn’t be in the house afterward because of the strong smell. Took a while to get the smell out.

@marguicha sometimes you put something to cook and occupy yourself with something else and forget you have stuff cooking. One time my mom smelled something and wondered who is doing barbecue outside. She went into her kitchen to find a small pot that was heating water on the stove was still on the flame, all the water having evaporated. That’s what she smelled upstairs.
