I Want Eggs

I used the last of my eggs just a couple of days ago, but it has been over a month since I have bought any since the price hiked back up to $1.79 a dozen, and even the cheapest I have seen them, at Aldi, they wanted $1.49 a dozen.
I am not paying that.
Even the last batch at $1.19 was a bit too high for my tastes, but I was willing to accept it.
I want eggs, but I want them at a reasonable price and otherwise, I refuse to buy them. I will be in the store in the next couple of days and I will price check them. I am hoping the wait will prove to have provided a payoff.
I refuse to overpay for anything no matter how badly I want something.

I did not buy eggs for months and months and months when they were that high. I just won't pay it. And $1.49, while not horrible, they're just not going into my cart until they come down. I remember when I didn't buy ground beef for nearly two years because I did not like the price. I simply refuse to over pay for anything and I will find ways to work around it unless I absolutely need eggs for something.

The price of eggs here is the same that @Beestring pays in Hong Kong, it's US$ 3.70 for 15 eggs. Down from the US$4.60 we paid a few months ago.

You need to find someone who raises chickens to supply you with cheap eggs. I have several at work, and they’re always bringing in fresh eggs to give away.

I cook and bake everything from scratch. Eggs are much needed here...I barter for mine with my good friend Tammy, who has chickens. I bake her either brownies or cookies, she gives me lots of very fresh eggs. We have been doing that for maybe 4-5 years? It works well for us.
Eggs do provide a lot of protein, which son and I both have to be careful to try to get enough of. $1.79 sounds like a lot, yes, but it's a lot better than last year when the prices were above $5 a dozen!
You could get some chickens, I guess. Jim, the chicken farmer!

I don't go based off of where they got to in price, but what I paid before they got outrageously priced. The average price for a dozen for me was about 89 cents, so regardless of whether they were $5 a dozen at one time, I still have to justify in my mind that paying 100% more for them now at $1.79 is a good deal.
It's not. And I can't justify that it is. That's just me. I admit, I am a tightwad, but I also won't give in to the market just because it thinks I have to. I don't, and I won't. lol

@MarieCoyle Oh yes. Prairie Farms is definitely in my neck of the woods. I am about 20 minutes from St. Louis if that helps to narrow down a locale. That being said, I rarely buy Prairie Farms, mainly because of the price. My wife actually prefers the Schnuck's brand when it comes to cottage cheese, and who knows, because of were Schnuck's operates, they MAY contract Prairie Farms to make it for them. But I can't verify that.
That being said, the Ruler Foods today had eggs for $1.59 and I still would not buy them for that price.

We all have our limits on different things we buy. I am that way about some things. Since I do make pretty much everything from scratch, I still need eggs to do that with--and they don't cost me much to barter for. (I love bartering, I wish it would come back in style!) I am also not adverse to trying other versions of old favorite products, never know, I might discover an entire different choice of something that I prefer.
Where I live, we have a brand name called Prairie Farms, a dairy company. I never buy their milk or butter, as it's way pricier than other brands. But I will not compromise on their cottage cheese. I have never found a cheaper brand that tastes as good as theirs does. You may have Prairie Farms as you are not terribly far from me. My kids that live close by say the same thing--if they can't find any Prairie Farms cottage cheese, they aren't buying any at all. So we watch for sales on it, and buy a few ahead. Store them unopened in the refrigerator, upside down. Don't ask me why, but when they are stored upside down, they last a long, long time.

Eggs are much more expensive here. I need to pay US$3.7 for 15 eggs from US; $2.7 for 10 eggs from Japan.

@ShyBear88 I know. But I figured maybe you did not realize you had me blocked. Personally, I don't care if people do block me, and I wasn't concerned to read your comment as much as I wanted to make sure if you wanted me to see it and respond to it, you would have the opportunity. If it had only been one post I'd have simply chalked it up as an error. But once I saw a few I figured you simply didn't know I was blocked.
I imagine my method accomplishes the same goal, really, and why bother admin with it? Now that you are here I simply deleted the portion of the comment that made the reference, and if you would like, once you read this, I can delete both comments associated with that as well.
Just let me know.

To me that is cheap! Come to Va and shop at the stores. I just spent $2.04 for 18 eggs. I was looking for a dozen but they didn't have any and I need more than 6 eggs. So 18 it was and still $2.04 seems reasonable. Not as bad as meats.

I agree $2.04 for 18 would have been closer to a price I might be willing to pay. $2.04 is essentially $1.36 for a dozen and therefore beats the $1.49 price point. At $1.79 per dozen 18 would have cost me $2.69 and at $1.49 18 would have cost me $2.24, so your price there is cheap compared.

I don't buy eggs often since I don't eat them so I really have no idea what the current price is here.

Well, I don't eat breakfast in the morning, so it works out there. I am just not eating them or using them right now. I did just finish off my last dozen which I got for $1.19, so I am just looking to add them back to the fridge at a price point I am willing to pay.

$1.79 is a good price for eggs. At least here in NYC. By the way, what eggs do you buy—white, brown, heirloom? I prefer brown to white. Never bought heirloom because either hard to find or are very expensive. Don’t know why.

@porwest hey, $1.79 for a dozen eggs is better than say $3.39. I paid that much yesterday for a dozen jumbo brown eggs. And they weren’t cage free or free range or organic. And these were the cheapest brown eggs at the store.

@lovebuglena But again, I can't justify paying 100% more than I used to. It just makes no economic sense to me at all, and so I just can't do it.

Not for me it isn't. I was paying an average of 89 cents per dozen not that long ago, so in order for me to feel like $1.79 is a good price is to accept that I am willing to pay 100% more for them now than I used to pay for them.
I could NEVER in a million years look at something priced 100% higher and ever consider it a good deal. lol

One egg in my country is currently $0.20. so $1 buys only five eggs. I think yours is cheaper.

We pay around 70 Indian rupees for a dozen eggs, that would be around a dollar for a dozen. It really pinches when you have to pay more for things that one needs on daily basis. Food inflation hurts the most.

You don't have farmer's markets over there? We buy at market, huge eggs, they are the size of duck eggs, for about $1.64/doz. If we were to buy normal 50g eggs, they would be about $1.1/doz. Supermarkets sell really small eggs here for about $2/doz, which we will not pay.
That being said, I'm sure brown shelled eggs will be cheaper or even mixtures of white and brown shelled in the same box, but all we can ever get here are white shelled eggs, it is the maddest thing. And luckily never washed either, so we don't need to store in the fridge.

We do have farmer's markets here, but generally they don't sell eggs and even if they do they are way more expensive than any in the regular stores. The eggs they mainly sell in the stores are white, but you can get brown ones if you want to pay more.

If you know anyone that has chickens, they may sell them to you real cheap or they may just give you extra. That happened to us this past year. When eggs were really high, my neighbor bought and raised chickens and sold us some that were way cheaper than the store. Then , someone at my husband's work had lots of extra eggs that they gave away.

I hear ya, but that's why they can charge so much. If the market is willing to rest on their laurels and just give in, they can charge whatever they want. I like to believe someone out there is saying, "Oh crap, Jim's not buying eggs. We better lower the price or else." lol
