6/18/24 - Update on My Husband

My husband didn't call yesterday which was too bad because I had a lot to tell him. Gave the completed appeal to our housekeeper; and she will mail it from the post office with a Return Receipt requested. Looked into long term care insurance. This is the type of thing we should have done years ago. Now it will cost $1,600 per month for me; and my husband is too old to be covered. Those of you in your 60s or so, if you can afford it, should think about getting some long-term care insurance now. Thank you for your continued prayers, support and thoughts. Photo Credit: Pixabay

I'm sorry it would cost too much for long-term care insurance. I'm glad your housekeeper will mail the appeal today.

We never imagined needing long term care insurance. That's the mistake many people make.

OUCH. $1,600 a month for the insurance??? I’m very thankful I don’t have to worry about that. (The VA will provide it because of my disability rating.)

@LindaOHio — I have a disability rating above 50% so I can go to a VA long-term care facility. It depends on a service-connected disability.

@FourWalls I see. I wonder if they have any VA long-term facilities anywhere near us.

We are both disabled. Are you saying that the VA will pay for long term care????

My 2daughters changed to health insurances that were not so expensive. I agree with you but I have no power over them.

Most people do not think to need long care when they are still young and healthy. Good advice.

Good advice. You never know when things will take a turn and more care is needed. We tend to think of aging in terms of retirement, but very rarely consider we may need long term care at some point.

That’s good advice, Linda. My grandpa got it for my grandma despite her insistence that she didn’t need it, and after he was gone she turned out to need it.

Oh I thought you had done the appeal already. You are right, you should have looked into it sooner. The problem with that insurance is it is expensive.

That is something that we will have to look into once I retire because until then my benefits from work cover us both for this.

We should hear about the appeal in about 2 weeks or so. Long term care insurance would have been a lot cheaper in our 60s.

That's a shame insurance won't cover your husband. Travel insurance becomes outrageously expensive as you get older too.

We couldn't afford those kind of prices times two anyway. That would be $3,000+ a month!

It's very expensive, yes. It is my understanding that the older we are, if we qualify for it the more expensive it is. So, it would be better to get it at a younger age...no one ever thinks about this possible need. My aunt bought it at 60, and we worried she was throwing her money away. Hers paid for seven full years, and she used every bit of it. She passed away a few months after all the benefits were used up, her husband paid for the remainder. But we were so, so thankful she had thought to get that.
