1/6/25 - Update On My Husband

We went to visit him yesterday and brought him a pork and sauerkraut dinner. He seemed to enjoy it. When we arrived he was dressed and in a wheelchair by the nurses' station. These days it's so hard to hear and understand him. He has some sort of respiratory illness; and they have him on meds for it. I tried to get an answer about his showers from the aide at the nurses' station; but she couldn't tell me since it wasn't on her shift. More calls to make now until I find out what's going on. Thank you for your continued prayers, support and thoughts. Photo Credit: Pixabay

I would think he'd have an odor about him if he wasn't getting cleaned some way. I hope the respiratory illness heals quickly.

@LindaOHio Oh, I see. Most people develop an odor about them if they don't shower often enough. I'm glad your hubby doesn't.

@DaddyEvil He's never been very stinky. I looked at his hair and it looks clean.

My husband was never very "stinky". I just want to make sure he's getting his showers because this facility is known for not giving them to residents.

I would think it would be in his chart about his showers. I'm sorry he has a respiratory illness.

One of the aides looked in a book; but she was unable to tell me anything. Maybe it showed that he HASN'T been showered. I will find out.

The aid should have been able to look in his chart. Anyone who has access to it should tell you what you need to know. I am glad they seem to get him up and keep an eye on him. I bet the dinner was really a treat for him.

She was looking in a book but was mumbling and rambling. Maybe she saw that he hadn't been bathed. I will get to the bottom of this.

Well, does he smell, does he look clean? How does his skin look? Is it better or worse then the last time you saw him? If that's inproved or looks good you know he's been getting his shwers. If he looks worse, or dirty, then he's not.

I checked his hair; and it looked clean. I want to know for sure because this facility is well known for not giving residents showers.

Poor man. He has gone through so much in the last 12 months - as have you.

There are some days I can't stand it because all I can think about is him in his room, alone, and I can't see him or talk to him.

@lovebuglena No. He probably caught something. There's a lot of germs in a long term care facility.

Don't know. Could be a bug of some kind.

See, I’d be living up to my name in that case, asking the aide to go find someone who CAN answer the question.

That must have been a welcome sight to see him dressed in the wheelchair waiting for you to come along. I know when I have pneumonia I don't have enough breath to turn the volume up when I am speaking, I can feel for you not being able to hear him. I went over to spend some time with the girls this afternoon, and they are at that age where they think that the speak perfect, but they talk so fast I cannot understand them. I don't know how my hubs does.

Yes, I know what you mean about speaking too fast. My husband's 3rd cousin's son is 11 and he rattles off so fast I can't understand a word he says.

Hope those meds work for his respiratory issues and that you can get answers about his showers, etc. At least you were able to visit and I'm sure he was happy to see you.

I left my last round of questions for the social worker. If she doesn't answer, I have found the number for the Ohio State Ombudsman.

It was tense because he kept saying things that I couldn't hear or understand; and he gets angry easily now.

@LindaOHio Sounds like one of the symptoms of dementia. Or his situation has just made him a bit on edge. I feel for you.
