Horse-drawn bread cart

The top photo shows a horse-drawn baker’s van which is on display in the Collie Museum. Isn’t it a lovely shape? Because I lived on a farm, we never had anything delivered by such conveyances but I know that the horses learnt the route and knew when to stop and start almost without being told. I learnt to ride on a horse which had drawn a milk-cart (lower photo). We used her in a farm cart for small tasks around the farm and she taught me to ride. Don’t I look proud? And many of you would have seen it before.

Both are nice photos! And you do look happy in the photo. I grew up on a farm, too. I learned to ride on a Shetland Pony, then "graduated" to full-sized horses. We rode horses all over the countryside. (I'm a few days younger than you. We never used horses in our farm work. The most work they did was pulling carts filled with kids to picnics.)

My Dad was one of the last to use horses for ploughing, etc but we always used horses for sheep and cattle work.

@JudyEv We had an old tractor for plowing and just walked across the pastures when we needed to bring the cows or horses in. The horses would come by themselves if you called them by name and rattled an old bucket. Some of the cows would come in themselves if you called them by name but some you had to go find and then they'd follow you in to the barnyard.

@DaddyEvil We had big mobs of catlle and sheep. The millking cows would come when called if they weren't already waiting to be milked.

Quite a vintage stuff. We might find such an arrangement odd today. Yet long time back, people had to come out of the norm and develop such things. Nice Photo Memories as well.

@JudyEv You said deliver milk to the nearby town. The guy in that movie, Topol is the actor, who supplies milk. You should watch that one. It was such a touching movie.

@vandana7 Why does it remind you of Fiddler on the Roof? I haven't seen that movie; otherwise perhaps I'd know.

I do envy you...having lived on a farm. But to be honest, I am a minimalist So the bread cart seems wonderful to have my living quarters in it. LOL You have those tear drops ...right? Something like that.

In the early 2000s we had a pair of ponies and a carriage. I drove them and Vince was my 'groom'. I enjoyed those times.

@allknowing Yes, I did understand that. My mother would take the older children to school in a horse and cart.

Oh, the bread cart is so nice. I've never seen anything like that, although I do remember milk/dairy delivery trucks, they went to houses, picked up the glass empties, and left full ones. I wish that was still available, so convenient! That's a special picture of you enjoying yourself on the horse!

@JudyEv I always wanted a horse when I was younger. I had some family nearby that had several horses so I did learn to ride, and enjoyed going out often. Such good memories! I love the name Trixie for a horse.

I remember when 'the breadman' would come to the house, and the milkman too. But they used motor vehicles. I think I remember the scrap man coming down the street with his horse and wagon, but that might just be my imagination co-opting one of my mother's memories.

What a nice restoration on that cart. My grandparents always had a horse or two around, but I do not remember if they rode them to work the cattle or not. I think my Uncle did. We did not have any carts to pull, though.
