Eighty Two!!!!

Hey, how about that? We got close to a record tonight. During the storms that just went through town gave us a wind gust of eighty two miles per hour.
A little perspective: a category one hurricane’s minimum wind speed is 74 MPH. We hit 82.
That’s second all-time in Louisville, just two MPH below the 84-MPH champion. It has hit 84 MPH here twice: once on July 13, 1971, during a severe thunderstorm; and once on April 3, 1974, during the Super Outbreak tornado day.
I’m fine. My brother’s fine. My neighborhood is fine. There’s a rescue going on in part of town, where a tree fell on a house. The worst news is that over 42,000 are without power in town. We got off easily. St. Louis, Missouri had significant damage at, at most recent reports, four fatalities.
I’m also very thankful.
The photo is me in my safe place, watching the weather unfold.

I'm glad everyone is okay where you live.
I knew we were having some strong winds that blew the storms on past my area fairly quickly this afternoon. I didn't realize St. Louis got hit with a tornado until just now, though. (I don't know anyone there.)

@DaddyEvil — the one family I know in southern Kentucky, who wasn’t in the direct path of the storms (they were north of them) have checked in on Facebook, and they’re okay. Their son is a first responder, and he’s been helping out in London (KY).

I can do without hearing the words ‘severe weather’ for a good long while.

I’m no expert, but London looks easily like an EF4. There’s arial footage where you can see where the trees were flattened as it went through Daniel Boone National Forest.

Thank you. I’m amazed at how quickly they can get power restored after these events. (Sad to say they’ve had a lot of practice here the last two years.)

@LadyDuck — I pray for them all the time. When they’re done with us, they’ll get in their trucks, leave their families, and go help somewhere else in the US that’s been hit by bad weather. Amazing people.

@FourWalls - I am sure you would prefer that they had less practice and a more peaceful weather.

God certainly blessed me this evening. They just announced that the rescue was successful and everyone’s been extracted from the house with non-life threatening injuries.

So far our sand storms haven't hit the 80s in the 65 years I've lived here but I still recall 1973 when a sandstorm was so srong that it knocked over a semi, I only know this because I was driving in that storm and passed by that truck, I was going about 10 mph in that wind but luckily I had a gremlin which wasn't too high for the velocity of those kinds of storms

First time I’ve heard of having a Gremlin being a good thing!
(They were past their prime by the time I started driving, although my roommate in Jacksonville had a Pacer…still one of the ugliest cars ever!
)
Did you hear they had a dust storm in CHICAGO earlier this week? Of all the places to see a dust storm warning! I expect them in west Texas, but Chicago????

I'm glad you are okay. There are a bunch (forgot exactly what I read) of people killed and many homes damaged or destroyed.

@FourWalls that's awful. I really hate any kind of storm. Prayers for all that were affected.

I’ll take the 82 MPH wind gusts to what they had down in southern Kentucky with what looks like an EF-4 tornado.

The worst part for us was the absolutely terrible dust storm bursts. So many wrecks, people off the highways everywhere up here, couldn't even find the exits! Crazy, and hard to breath if you went outside. I had a terrible allergy day due to the dust, and basically stayed inside. I was supposed to take the son to an appointment but we changed it to Monday instead. No way did we need to be out in a dust storm. When I called to change it, the lady said they had many cancellations due to the dust storm, so I didn't feel so bad.

They were talking about the storms splitting, and they did. The tornadoes were north of us (Indianapolis area) and south of us (Bowling Green).

Great to hear you’ve survived!
We’ve had rather benign weather lately. Dry, warm, mainly sunny and very little wind. I don’t think we have had any significant rainfall for over 2 months. The authorities are now considering imposing restrictions like hosepipe bans in certain parts of the country if it doesn’t rain soon. I can see rain in the forecast for the end of next week, but it doesn’t look like much.

We had to cancel our big Derby Festival party “Thunder Over Louisville” because of flooding. Too bad we couldn’t have sent some of that water to you and helped us both out!

Four days in a row of level three severe threats are outlined by the Storms Prediction Center (not for us specifically, but throughout the U.S.).

Science behind it: the majority of fatal injuries are caused by blunt force trauma to the head.

I'm glad you and yours are safe and sound. I heard of quite a few fatalities which is tragic...not only in Kentucky. Stay safe and keep in touch.
