I find it hard to believe that it has been two years since by older brother passed away.

George would be 79 if he were alive today. He was.a major influence in my life. Because he was "older," I looked up to him. His musical tastes were a powerful force in shaping my musical tastes. He introduced me to the music of John Prine, Jesse Winchester, The Band, and Mason Proffit. He was an Army paratrooper who served in Vietnam. He was on, and survived, what came to be known as "Hamburger Hill." He came home with a Purple Heart, but, happily, no "monkey on his back." He taught creative writing upon his return to the US. I suppose there is some irony in the fact that the anniversary of his death coincides with the "military parade" that occurred yesterday. He was exposed to Agent Orange in Vietnam, and that led to health issues later in his life, and ultimately his death. I spent a Summer with him and his girlfriend in Galena Illinois in the late 1970s. He and I build a stone wall behind his girlfriend's Summer house there. It was slow and meticulous work, and really satisfying. A metaphor for how I have tried to live my life, I suppose. More recently, he and his former housemate, Ed Holstein, would take me out to dinner when I visited Chicago. Ed is the former Earl of Old Town bartender who wrote "Jazzman," a song that appeared on the flipside of a Pure Prairie League album called (I think) "Bustin' Out." That album featured "Amie," a song that got some radio play here in the US. I bet @FourWalls has heard it. A band I'm in actually covers it. Listening to sacred music makes me wax sentimental. It is Sunday, and I do not have to work today. I will head to the pool later In the day.

To quote the monkey in Lion King, "He lives in (me)."

@vandana7 I think those who have seen difficult things sometimes want to enjoy simple childish things.

No wonder you are childish. People who have older siblings tend to remain in that childish mode almost forever! Must have indulged you quite a bit. Though it is kinda surprising that there was so much age gap between you two.

@TheHorse I see! We hardly come across step mothers and step children in our world. So it didn't strike me. Did your step mom treat you well? Don't answer if it is too personal.

Sorry to hear of his passing and the reason. He sounds like quite a character. You must have gotten that from being around him so much. Hehe.

I'm sorry your brother is gone... And sorry so much stuff trump is doing is so prominent in all our minds. I had two brothers in Vietnam but they never wanted to talk about their time in service. We learned not to mention anything about the war. I didn't spend much time with either one of them. (The younger one of those two brothers is still alive but spends most of his time in the hospital. He doesn't like anyone going to visit him there.) I only have one other brother left... The one that helps Pretty and I when we need to ask for help. He lives a few blocks away from us here in our city. I hope you're enjoying your day, pony.

I did not discuss Vietnam with George. But he knew I admired him for his service.

At least you have some great memories. In life, sometimes that's worth more than anything. Onward and upward.

I'm sorry, he sounds like a truly special brother and I am sure you still miss him. I know I still miss my sister so much, and it's been a long time now. I am glad you can take comfort in your memories of his music.

Thanks, Marie. I celebrate his memory every time I perform a teach a song he turned me on to.
