Are you a do-what or a go-pher?

MyLotter Kareng (@kareng) has been helping her husband with working on his boats and has been ordering some bits and pieces for him. When Vince and I are working on a project, he is the boss and I am the helper, although I often have really good ideas too. I sometimes tell people I’m the ‘do-what’ as in ‘do what I’m told’ or the ‘go-pher’ as in ‘go for this’ or ‘go for that’. I’m sure there are many others who find themselves in these positions. No photo this time as for some reason photos won’t load at the moment.

In India, we do not have the engineering background per se. So for every little thing, we depend upon workers, who do the thing. The best I remember ... repairing those music tapes using cello taps, and once the water cooler was leaking in the office...all male members were kinda confused what to do. I switched off the cooler, opened the case, pushed the pipe in. This made them ask me to repair the switches now and then. Boy was I scared....I mean, I can handle screw driver and remove the plastic wire around the copper wire, and push i in, and keep it separate...but earthing??? I told them many times, I am not an electrician....they said ...doesn't matter, we need the stuff now. Their office, their problem. LOL

I'm quite good at fixing things. You just have to work what works what and what needs moving/repairing/whatever. I wouldn't touch electricity though.

I've always been the one working on things and having to go get what I need. Pretty ignores me when I'm working on something.

@JudyEv I'll use an electric buffer if I can handle it. If I take too much off, I'll be fired.

Buffing and waxing both sound like hard work.

Most people work as assistants. However an ace spiker can do nothing without a setter.

@JudyEv An ace spiker is a volleyball player who scores points through powerfil spikes (smash a ball).Setter is the passer in volleyball.

@changjiangzhibin89 Okay thanks. I really know nothing about volleyball although it is quite popular here. Beach volleyball is popular too because of our climate I guess.

You will have to help me here. What is a spiker please? And what does his/her setter do?

My husband is the boss and I am the helper, even if often I am the one who has to "correct" what he is doing. The site has some problems this morning.

I enjoy getting all the tools he might need or pre-empting what will be needed next. Maybe I should have been a builder.

it depends, if it has something to do with electronics, it is my husband who is the boss. But doing something around the house like carpentry or things like that, I am the boss

I think sometimes women are more practical. Often a problem is easily fixed. It isn't always a big problem.

I usually like to do things on my own. But every now and then, I need some help and I always ask for help when I need it. Like when I get this portable catio, you can bet I won’t know how to put it together. So I will ask the guys in my life to do it for me. Judy, I have to show you this thing. I think my cats will love it. I’ll be needing it for my new place. I plan on growing all kinds of cat-friendly weeds, catnip, and grass inside.

@Melanie_Marie This is such a great idea. Letting cats come and go freely is pretty much frowned upon here now. They are predators for our smaller native animals and for our birds. But what you are getting is an ideal solution. At least you don't have to have them in the house all the time.

My wife has good ideas when we work on a project as well. The rule is to cut down the good idea first and then wait a little bit after I try what I want and it fails, then have a voila! moment where I spit out her idea and claim it as my own and then tell her she should listen to me more often.

This must be a 'man' thing. Vince sometimes claims an idea as his own but he wouldn't be game to tell me I should listen to him more often!

I think with us it very much depends on what job we arew undertaking. I help him with his jobs and he helps me with mine ...our boss and do what roles change accordingly.

I recall a comic strip where the boss introduces an employee to a client. To impress the client, the employee says "I am the go-getter in this place". The boss then tells him " go and get two cups of tea for us". I attend to basic issues in my house but no complicated ones. My wife is good at solving issues that may escape my understanding.

I don't think anyone can argue that men and women don't think differently. I can often find a solution and it may simply be because I'm not tied down to a conventional way of doing something, because I know nothing about how it would normally be done. I hope you can make sense of that last sentence! lol

We have sometimes saved a heap of money by doing something ourselves but our labour costs would not want to be calculated. We're never very time-efficient.

Hubby and I never worked on a project together as he always procrastinated about the projects that needed to be done. I have since completed 80% of the home projects.
