Spaghetti

I was using WhatsApp and talking with a friend while making spaghetti this evening. When I broke the spaghetti into the pot, he gasped and told me I was doing it wrong... Something about Italians claiming you couldn't break spaghetti noodles... I asked if he saw a way to get it into my pot of boiling water without breaking it or just putting half of it in and letting half of it cook first and then stirring it to get the rest of the noodle into the water? He claimed he uses a bigger pot. Well, my stove won't hold a bigger pot so the spaghetti gets broken and stirred into the pot I own... I told him the next time he makes spaghetti for me, he can show me how his way is better than mine.

Just tell him that when you break the noodles all the calories fall out and you can eat more without gaining weight. Of course we know I am not Italian.

I used to do that. Now I don't break them. I wait a while when the first half soak then when it is soft I will push the other half into the pan

That makes half of the spaghetti noodle overcooked by the time the whole noodle is done.

@rakski Or, just break the noodles and you don't have to wait for that minute.

@DaddyEvil not really, just a minute and it will be softer that you can bend the noodles to go inside the pan

This correlates with a couple scenes from movies that I recall where the cook had spaghetti sticking out of the pan.

He's Filipino... He does eat macaroni a lot. He also wanted to know when I was cutting up hotdogs to add to the spaghetti sauce I was heating with hamburger. I told him I'd never heard of anyone adding hotdogs to spaghetti before.

I am with you on breaking the spaghetti noodles. I also don't swirl the noodles when I eat them- also don't do it with Ramen noodles.

I have no problem swirling the noodles on my fork... Pretty eats Raman noodles but I don't like them. They taste funny to me.

@sallypup Yes, I know that... But they don't have a good flavor like most unhealthy foods do.

Even though I have a big pot and my stove can handle it, I will break long noodles while boiling it. Well, that's for another reason altogether. My younger daughter's sensory issues, she does not like long noodles swirling around her fork. It's okay to do it all your way and your convenience. It does not effect the taste.

I do break the noodles if I make a small amount to fit in a smaller pot. But otherwise, I use a big pot - and often the longer noodles do stick out of the water for a bit. But maybe after a minute, I can use tongs to stir it around so it all goes down in the water. We all gotta do what we gotta do, right? In the end it tastes the same anyway . You've been busy with posts again! I'll catch up eventually . Hope you have been doing well .

Other than falling into a broken window and slicing the base of my hand open, we've been doing well, thank you. I kept wondering if you were having too much fun to come visit us on myLot. (Slicing my hand open scared Pretty enough that she wouldn't stop insisting I had to go to the ER... I'm still positive the cut was sealing itself before we got there and the nurse yanked the cut open and started spraying saline solution into it. That hurt more than cutting it open did!) I normally make enough for three meals between Pretty and I... then we don't want it for another month. And you've missed out on me talking about losing weight the last two months... I lost 20 lbs in May and another 13 lbs in June. The doctor says I'm doing fine so far... (Pretty called her complaining I'm losing weight too fast. The doctor told her to leave me alone.)

I do the same thing that you do for the noodles. I have always done it that way.

You know that I am Italian, of course I do not break spaghetti, we have a HIGH pot where you cook the spaghetti. You can also use a bigger one, it worked here until I could have again a spaghetti pot that goes on my induction stove.

@DaddyEvil I am sure it's a matter of habit, I do not arrive to twirl short spaghetti on a fork.

@LadyDuck You could try breaking it in half once when you make spaghetti and see if it doesn't work just as good for you twirling it as long spaghetti does.

But nothing bad happens when I break it. It's easier for me to twirl it on the fork when it's only half the length.

I break mine in half too when I'm cooking spaghetti. I'm sure it still tastes the same whether it's broken or not.

Isn't it supposed to represent cutting your life short or something?? I just put the end of the spaghetti in the pan and as soon as it softens enough to bend I push the other end down with the lid. Works fine; I don't end up with one end cooked more than the other!

I don't know, I'm not Italian and neither is he. (He's Filipino and I don't know why it makes a difference.) If you just break it, it all can go into the pot at the same time.

Yeah Italians are horrified by breaking long pasta. That being said I do it every time because I'm not trying to do Lady and the Tramp with super long linguine/spaghetti/fettuccine/etc.

Half the noodle twirls up just fine on my fork so I don't see a problem with it. I'm not trying to make a ball of spaghetti big enough to choke on!

It is bad luck to break the spaghetti ....the trick is to hold it at one end then lower the other end into the boiling water , as it softens you can push it down slowly and curl it around in the pan...it will look like a birds nest in the bottom of the pan. . I probably haven't explained it very well.

You really believe that? I've broken it in half all my life and haven't seen bad luck from it yet. When I do see a spaghetti monster coming after me, then I'll stop breaking it in half.
