Spaghetti

I was using WhatsApp and talking with a friend while making spaghetti this evening. When I broke the spaghetti into the pot, he gasped and told me I was doing it wrong... Something about Italians claiming you couldn't break spaghetti noodles... I asked if he saw a way to get it into my pot of boiling water without breaking it or just putting half of it in and letting half of it cook first and then stirring it to get the rest of the noodle into the water? He claimed he uses a bigger pot. Well, my stove won't hold a bigger pot so the spaghetti gets broken and stirred into the pot I own...
I told him the next time he makes spaghetti for me, he can show me how his way is better than mine.

Just tell him that when you break the noodles all the calories fall out and you can eat more without gaining weight. Of course we know I am not Italian.

That makes half of the spaghetti noodle overcooked by the time the whole noodle is done.

@rakski Or, just break the noodles and you don't have to wait for that minute.

@DaddyEvil not really, just a minute and it will be softer that you can bend the noodles to go inside the pan

I have no problem swirling the noodles on my fork... Pretty eats Raman noodles but I don't like them. They taste funny to me.

@sallypup Yes, I know that... But they don't have a good flavor like most unhealthy foods do.

Even though I have a big pot and my stove can handle it, I will break long noodles while boiling it. Well, that's for another reason altogether. My younger daughter's sensory issues, she does not like long noodles swirling around her fork.
It's okay to do it all your way and your convenience. It does not effect the taste.

This correlates with a couple scenes from movies that I recall where the cook had spaghetti sticking out of the pan.

@DaddyEvil I am sure it's a matter of habit, I do not arrive to twirl short spaghetti on a fork.

@LadyDuck You could try breaking it in half once when you make spaghetti and see if it doesn't work just as good for you twirling it as long spaghetti does.

But nothing bad happens when I break it. It's easier for me to twirl it on the fork when it's only half the length.

Isn't it supposed to represent cutting your life short or something??
I just put the end of the spaghetti in the pan and as soon as it softens enough to bend I push the other end down with the lid. Works fine; I don't end up with one end cooked more than the other!

I don't know, I'm not Italian and neither is he. (He's Filipino and I don't know why it makes a difference.)
If you just break it, it all can go into the pot at the same time.

@DaddyEvil It can, but then it isn't really spaghetti. If I wanted short pasta I'd use some other shape

Half the noodle twirls up just fine on my fork so I don't see a problem with it. I'm not trying to make a ball of spaghetti big enough to choke on!

I don't have so big pot to cook spaghetti. I will put half of it and cook it after it's a little soft. Then stir it and the rest will be in the water. Of couse you shall add the salt into the first at the beginning. I heard that this is a trick that your spaghetti won't be borken easily when they are cooking.

@DaddyEvil I haven't heard to add the oil to water. I wish there is a real Italian to answer this as he/she shall be professional

I put a little salt and oil into the water before bringing it to a boil... But my spaghetti was broken before it touched the water.

I do break the noodles if I make a small amount to fit in a smaller pot. But otherwise, I use a big pot - and often the longer noodles do stick out of the water for a bit. But maybe after a minute, I can use tongs to stir it around so it all goes down in the water. We all gotta do what we gotta do, right? In the end it tastes the same anyway
.
You've been busy with posts again! I'll catch up eventually
. Hope you have been doing well
.

@DaddyEvil Here I is - late - but here
. Yah, I wish my excuse to not be "here" was all fun, but really it's just been hectic. Hope your hand has healed up since then - I'll catch you about that when I get back to that post. You are probably right about that glass cut . . . a clean glass cut is often the perfect "slice" - it probably would have sealed up on it's own.
My over-making of meals doesn't last for more meals anymore. The kids have grown and so have their appetites
. I pack some for Hubby's work lunch - and deliver some to my mom - so in the end there really are no leftovers.
Ohhh, well congratulations on the weight loss! (Did I miss a post on this?) How are you feeling . . . because I think that's the true test . . . if you feel pretty darn good, that's what counts. Sounds like the doctor is pleased - keep it up
!

I totally understand about getting busy and not having time to come to myLot. I tend to have lots of spare time when I can't see to do anything else.
Pretty tends to make quinoa or rice more often than not and I won't eat either of those grains. A lot of the time, I freeze leftovers so Pretty can heat them up for me when I can't see to cook for myself... We know I'll eat anything I cook so she doesn't have to do much work helping me with meals.
I've been feeling fine, thank you. No, you didn't miss any posts about weight loss... People on myLot don't like it so I only say something at the end of some other discussion. (They worry I'm losing weight too fast so I tend to delete anything where people are telling me not to lose so fast. When they become my doctor, then I'll listen to them.
) I've been doing some working out with weights but have to be careful because I've been having sciatic nerve problems on my left side. That's always fun!

Yes, I've seen Italians acting scared or upset if somebody breaks spaghetti... Nothing bad happens when they break the spaghetti except non-Italians can eat it easier...

Get a good handful make sure water is a rolling boil. push first half in then gently push other half in. It takes ten seconds or so you won't notice any being more cooked than other bits. Or just buy the fresh stuff

What is egg curry? Sam eats some things that I think are odd... There's no telling what he'd think about that.
