That One Thing On My Kitchen Counter That I Hate

Happy Thursday Everyone! and a big good-bye to July.
When I was doing a quick tidy-up of the kitchen this morning and wiping down the counters I had to move a few things.
The one thing I had said I would never get again (when I moved here) was a dish rack/drainer. I certainly was prepared to do without one since I had a dishwasher. So why would I need a dish rack next to the sink.
It wasn't long before I realized that not everything would go in the dishwasher and therefor a dish rack was still needed.
Well, all these years later and I still hate it. It takes up so much room and it just becomes a catch-all for things that don't get put away
Although there's enough counter space it's also filled with the coffee pot, toaster, air fryer and a bread box.
But, it's the dish rack that irks me the most.
Do you have one thing (or more) on your counter that drives you crazy?

We have one counter in this small house and Pretty keeps buying more things we don't need to put on it. We have a LARGE crockpot when we had a small one at the other house and it was plenty large enough. She bought a food processor she swore she needed and used a handful of times, but if I try to put it in a cabinet, she's gotta have it... And now, she's bought a sandwich maker to heat a sandwich, like we don't have a microwave.

I have lots of things and we are in process of trying to discover a bit more counter space for the ones that are electric.

@Marilynda1225 Pretty buys the stuff herself but we still don't need it or have room for it. She isn't the one trying to clean and work around this junk.

Sometimes I think Pretty and my daughter are related
I go through the same thing with all the gadgets my daughter wants and insists we need. I can't really complain since she's paying for her stuff

I hated mine too. I use a towel to put wet dishes on. I put them up when dry and then put towel in the laundry. I like this method much better.

Thats a good idea and certainly would eliminate not only the dish rack but also keep things from sitting on the counter indefinitely

I refuse to use a dish rack. If I have to hand wash something I use the drying pad I have in the counter

I have a small counter and not too much on it. I recently got rid of a Nesco Roaster. THAT was taking up too much space.

I would image a roaster would be big and take up a lot of room. I bet you enjoy having that space free now.

@Marilynda1225 Yes. My husband used it to make a turkey several years ago. I wanted cousin #3 to wash it out; but he insisted that he would do it. Turns out the whole inside rusted out during that time.

We don't. I can understand how it can be a problem. I wash a lot of things out after use and just put them away.

If you are referring to the palm tree rat that occasionally get in and runs across my counter then yes, I do not enjoy that at all, But it is not too bad keeping things tidy since it is only me here,

I don’t use a rack ….i don’t like them….i just have a super absorbent drying cloth that goes next to the sink . I haven’t got a dishwasher ….i don’t like them either ….. I wash up after each meal, the items go on the drying cloth and I dry them straight away and put things away. I don’t like crockery or cutlery hanging about , dirty or clean.

I will never own another dish rack, ever. I use a KitchenAid heavy washable thick mat if I need to set washed items on it. I then hang in to dry. I am weird about leaving wet things out to air dry. What I wash by hand, I dry and put away. I keep the dish soap under the sink in the cabinet, and my scratch pad in the top rack of the dishwasher. My kitchen is an open kitchen and I can’t relax looking at dishes that need to be cared for. I know, I’m weird.

Just put it into another room, and when you do larger items that you prefer handwashed, dry them and put them away right away. That is how I roll, and I haven't had a dishrack in decades.
But......the item on my counter top that bothers me the most is my big stand mixer, it is just 'there' and not as clean looking as it could be if it were not there, but no other place to store it right now.

If l hated it and it wasn't really needed I'd probably toss it in the bin a long time ago. However l don't use a dish washer and the two things l dislike seeing on my counter is the pot scourer and dish washing sponge. They are a necessity but soggy and sad looking and l have to change them often.
