Are Discussions Dead at MyLot?

I'm noticing that discussions are missing here. It's a great place to share thoughts, get and give advice and to get to know others from around the world.
Yet, there are very few discussions. Rarely will a post draw back and forth banter between members.
Most responses are limited to...
That must be fun.
That looks good.
I hope everything turns out okay.
You should look into that.
I agree with what you said.
I've had that before, it's really good.
Just quick one sentence responses that don't really add anything to the "discussion."
There are some discussions that share a back and forth or a short story as a response, but as a rule, the exchanges are lacking in actual discussion.
I can recall times here when discussions went on for days at a time. There were thoughtful comments, an effort was made to actually communicate with other members.
Maybe I got old and long for the days where MyLot was a true discussion forum.
Yes, there are a lot less members since the height of MyLot almost 20 years ago, but there seems to be a lot less discussion.
Just my 2 cents worth.
When you peel an apple, do you peel toward yourself or away?

I think you are right. Nowadays, a lot of folks just give a one line response. I wish there was more banter back and forth…..I have started ….like yourself on this post ….ending on a question to see if I can get a discussion going ….it works sometimes but not all the time.
I would like folks thoughts on my posts, their opinions, their experiences if the same or different ….
By the way , I peel towards myself when peeling an apple …..do you eat the core and pips. ?

I can't do seeds or skins anymore.
Most of my life, I ate everything except the stem.
I like to hear about other members experiences and share my own. I find it fun. Those exchanges earn us more pennies too, lol.

Yes. Me too.
I learn so much and see how differently people live. You post some of the most delicious sounding food. It makes me want to try everything.
Everyone has experiences that are interesting to others. Hobbies can connect two people that are thousands of miles apart. The older that I get, the more I want to know. How others live. What a day is like. What's for dinner. Pets. Spouses. Seasons. Rituals. All of it.
I see less of that here these days.

@Vikingswest1 I can only eat the actual apple …and the peel ….but I have friends who eat everything. I tried one day …the core and pips are not for me ….yuk.
Yes, another point is you don’t earn many pennies if you just have one line replies,
It’s not very interesting and you don’t actually find out much about the person…
I enjoy finding out about people’s lives from other parts of the world…the lifestyle they have and the food they eat. Hobbies, thoughts on every day situations as well as world wide issues.

The discussions and communications have changed greatly in the past year that I can tell.
It is very I ate this, I went there, I have this, I did that.......
It is difficult to comment on some of those discussions, as they are more of a post than a discussion in my opinion.
Alot of people do not write in a manner which feels like a discussion is welcome.
I have to say that I don't post many discussions as of late, I put my laptop in another room as I just stopped using it so much for this site.

@Vikingswest1 So many discussions have lost the human interaction touch.
I miss that, but I am also guilty of making statement posts myself.
Hopefully we can bring back conversations again on this site, it makes for alot of fun.
But it also decreases the amount of content that a member can borrow from online topics that they read, and of course the 'news' posts.

At one point, in about 2008, I spent hours and hours posting and responding at MyLot. Making 30 bucks a month was relatively easy. I don't post as often as I did.
You're right. Many discussions are more like statements and aren't easy to make contributions on.
I don't use anything but my phone anymore. I still have Windows 7 on my computer, lol.

It does make it fun.
I guess everyone posts statements or news but it can still open a dialogue.
Maybe others aren't looking for a dialogue. I think that those exchanges are why I'm still here.

I try to always add more than a one-liner, but yes, the active conversationalists are not around anymore. I do not peel apples generally, but eat the whole thing. If I were to peel it I would peel toward me.

I know that discussions can't be forced here. I just think it's more fun when people share more than a quick Thank You For Your Response in the comments.
I like to peel toward myself too. I don't eat skins anymore but even after peeling, I used to.

I still have discussions going on for days with a couple of users, but most of them now cut it short and you end up having nothing to add. I joined myLot 10 years ago and the number of members has decreased so much, particularly during the past year.
I peel the apple in spirals, toward myself.

@Vikingswest1 - I am also glad to see you back. I like to interact with users, but there are a few users who never dare to answer back when you type a comment. This is not exactly the purpose of this site, write a post and ignore the comments.

I see that you always add something to the discussions. You follow up too. That kind of posting makes for good conversations. Very nice to see you again.

No. You always post thoughtful content. The way you interact here leads to the exchanges this forum needs.
This post is in no way, directed at you.

No. You are spot on with this, and I have commented on it before. It's a far cry here from what it used to be, and a lot of it has become, unfortunately, a little bit boring. Many of the few remaining members just aren't engaged at all. Sure, sometimes a short response is warranted. But not all the time. And if people are truly engaged with a post, there's always something more to add. At least to my mind.
On top of that, it used to be if I went to Most Recent Discussions, I'd be there a while. Now I can get through a day's worth in about a half an hour.

I guess that's what I was getting at. It's become boring. I still enjoy participating and having exchanges, but the number of people willing to add an extra story or ask that extra question, seems to have dwindled down to a handful or two.

@Vikingswest1 The site made too many bad decisions, I think, at some point. At least that's what I gathered from outside conversations. They slashed the earnings in the algorithm, and we had at least two bad admin that really left people with a very bad taste in their mouths. It was a series of events that the site has yet to recover from, and I am not sure it will, honestly.
I'd like to see the site find a way to reinvigorate it, but I have a sense they really don't care.

As a kid, I would eat the peelings too.
Now I have trouble with nuts, seeds and skins so I just put the peels in the compost bin.

Hahah. My Dad used to peel apples that way too. It took me some time to figure it out, but soon, I was as good at it as my brothers and sisters.
My kids probably still do it too.

I post my discussions rarely.
Mine is philosophical in nature and not what happens in my daily life.
I like to go to back and forth but it does not happen here.
Some do not even reply to my responses - maybe just a "like".
I peel apple towards myself.

There was a time when a great deal of back and forth took place here but it seems that members aren't interested in a dialogue.
I always peel toward myself too. Even though Mom said to never do that.

I mean I post several times a day, most of the time I try to make it a little interactive.
There are a lot less people here and we've lost quite a few who were very active.
I don't peel apples. I can't remember the last time I peeled an apple.

You're right. The number of members just keep dropping. 15 years ago, it was common for discussions to get 70-100 or more responses. Some really active members would walk away with 100 dollars a month in earnings.
I don't see it ever returning to that level but the exchanges could get better. I exclude you from that. You always make a point of responding in a way that makes it a conversation.
I peel everything now.
As a kid, I would still eat the apple peelings, it was just sort of a contest of sorts in my family.

I have three apple trees, lol.
Apple butter, apple pie, apple bread, apple fritters, applesauce...
I give some to the food bank and the deer love the ones that fall to the ground.
I used to have a few close friends here but they all seem to have moved on. I still text with a couple people that I met here in 2006.

@Vikingswest1 I used to easily do fifteen to twenty dollars a month. Just a few hours a day. But several have passed on, some have just left and never come back. I know back when @JohnRoberts was still around, he would carry a conversation on every post and he would always discuss things. I miss him.
I try to respond and keep the conversation going. But I will say I know the core few that will respond, and that I know that I like reading there stuff. I don't try to be that way. But there are several discussions I see, that like you said don't have anything for me to respond to , or the people dont ever respond to my comments when I do comment on their stuff.
When I was in my early teens, my grandpa bought one fhose peelers off As Seen on Tv or whatever and he did potatoes and apples on that, but I don't think I ever saw him peel an apple either. But that's such a cool and sweet memory. I will be honest though, I don't eat a lot of apples unless they are in pie or salads, or homemade applesauce.

I would agree with you, even though I am a come and go person around here I have noticed most post get a one sentence response and I can't say I'm not guilty a lot of times. I couldn't tell you how to get that to change.
I peel toward myself even know that is more dangerous to do so. I just find it easier to do it that way though I don't eat apples as much as I should.

You are remembering the higher-paying days. ;) As am I.
In less than a month (Sept. 5th to be exact) I’ve been on here for…..
19 YEARS
Probably the same as you
My profile says 8 years only because I took off like a naughty-naughty when they quit paying.

I'm actually used to peeling apples toward myself—just a habit at this point!
And yes, I’ll admit I’m guilty of giving short or one-liner replies sometimes. But I’ve also had longer conversations with some members here—twice or even three times before the exchange naturally ends. It really depends on how the other person responds, my interest in the topic, or honestly… sometimes I just run out of things to say. That’s it.
