Do You Like Pierogis?

Pierogis are Polish dumplings with a filling that is wrapped with unleavened dough and cooked in boiling water. They can be sweet or savory. Some of the typical fillings are: potato, cheese, sauerkraut, mushroom, ground meat, quark (a cheese made from milk and soured), fruit or berries. Savory pierogis can be served topped with sour cream and/or fried onions. I've only had the potato pierogis; and they were quite good. There are several theories about the origin of the pierogi; but they are unable to be verified. One theory is that the dumplings originated in China and spread to Europe in the Middle Ages or later. They date back to at least 1682 because they were in Poland's first cookbook of that date. The pierogi turned up in America in Cleveland, OH (my birthplace); and the first documented sale was in 1928. The West Side of Cleveland has a very large Polish population. Have you ever had a pierogi? What kind do you like? Have you ever cooked a pierogi? Photo Credit: Pixabay

My daughter-in-law was born in Poland, and yes, I have had them. I have also cooked them, but I cheat and buy them frozen. I do not care for the sweet pierogis, I have a bag in the freezer currently but I cannot see it being finished.

It seems that the recipe was brought to Europe from China by Marco Polo. Considering the dough and the shape, the Chinese origin makes sense. I do not like pierogi.

I haven't had them but in India too we make dumplings with different stuffings. We use both regular flour and rice powder.

Grandma was 100% Polish so yes had them many times, I have attempted to make them in the past but they were not great, so I just buy them. For me, I have always gotten the potato, cheese and the sauerkraut. I would say my favorite would be the sauerkraut.
