I've Been Falling Lately...

Pretty went online and bought a heavy duty plastic shower chair and a grab bar for our shower stall. I had to call her for help when I couldn't get back up off the tub floor a couple of weeks ago. It was embarrassing for both of us... I did tuck a towel around me before she helped me up again. The shower chair/stool is perfect! And the grab bar works well for the intended purpose. Even though I'm not having problems with my sciatic nerve anymore, that doesn't mean I enjoy falling.

Most of the time I fall on the carpet in the house and that doesn't hurt. I have my cane when I fall on the carpet to help me get back up but can't use the cane in the shower.

@DaddyEvil .......Yes, that is my fear. I fell a few years back and wrenched my shoulder. I've heard stories of seniors being fine, having a fall and going downhill health wise afterwards.

@celticeagle I fell on our concrete front porch a couple of years ago and got a stone bruise on one hip. I limped around for months until that healed.

@daddyevil Falling is not recommended in the shower or anywhere else. I don’t need and help yet but I’d be more confident if there was something to hold on to in the shower. Holding on to one’s dignity can be a bit tricky when you fall while in the shower.

Part of the problem is that I have Graves' Disease and one of the fun parts of it is dizziness. Falling on the carpet or grass is not a problem but falling in the tub can be unpleasant.

Oh God. Falling in the shower is just not a good idea. Total ouch. I'm glad you have a with it daughter. Yes and more yes to grab bars. We have two in our shower and one by upstairs and downstairs toilet. You have the grab bars screwed into the house studs?? Hubby is also going to put a grab bar by the back door- there is an area there where there is nothing to grab onto as you head up the concrete steps.

The grab bar has big suction cups on each end. I put my full weight on it pulling myself up earlier. That sounds like our back door/stairs outside. We stopped using those after I fell going down them last fall. Pretty said she was going to see about getting a government grant to have new stairs/railing installed back there.

@sallypup We aren't allowed to make permanent changes to this house. The suction cup grab bar works great! The landlady already told Pretty we could build new stairs at the back door. (Anything that adds value to the property is okay to do here.)

@DaddyEvil Oh I hope you will be okay. I tried to put a suction cup bird feeder on my window and it fell right off. The best idea is to have those bars screwed into the studs. I hope your back stairs get fixed soon.

Oh no! Hope no serious injuries. I almost fell once and I grabbed onto the towel bar to prevent the fall. I was ok but the towel bar came off the wall. It wasn’t a metal one and it wasn’t the kind that screws in so maybe that’s why. I’m not that strong of a person.

Thanks. No, no serious injuries but I'm glad she bought the grab bar and stool. The grab bar has suction cups that hold onto the wall inside the shower stall. I put my full weight on it climbing to my feet earlier and it held with no problem. I'm glad you didn't get hurt!

@kareng Well, that's not entirely true. When it first happened, I went to a chiropractor who popped my hips and that fixed the sciatica for about a week or so before it started happening again. The problem is that Medicaid will only pay for two sessions with a chiropractor every year so I couldn't get it fixed again

This happens to me more often now. I tend to lose my balance. So, I hold on to something solid before I take a tentative step when arising from a prone or sitting position. Old age makes balancing more problematic. Do take care.

Old age has nothing to do with it... Graves' Disease makes me dizzy and, when that happens, I do grab for a wall, door or furniture to hang onto until I stop being dizzy. Thank you.

@DaddyEvil It doesn't mean she wasn't hurt, her head once hit the blunt end of a door, causing a lump and about 2 weeks then she didn't feel the pain.

These places (in the village) were designed with the elderly in mind but they don't have grab bars. I guess they thought they'd cut corners on that one.

Honestly, I don't know how they would help if a person was in the tub. I doubt if we can lift ourselves with just a bar and a hand that has to take on that weight. Showering standing is ideal. Thereafter walking out slowly because soap water can be slippery. I would think grab bars may be useful for getting up from commodes. Don't know. I thought of getting grab bars for Dad, but he wouldn't have it. And I am also confused how it would help. It may instead become an additional object for him to get hurt with when he is falling.

Outside the shower, I use my quad cane to help me stay upright... That doesn't work in the tub/shower, though. Grab bars are a must in elderly bathrooms.

Sometimes care does not only come from ourselves but we must also take care not to be alone in certain situations that we may notice are dangerous. If you see that you feel weak and at some point need help, wait for someone to be there just in case, preventively.

Grab bars are important in a bathroom. We have two bars in the bathroom. it was meant for my late father. useful for many years. we still have it on the wall. custom made and drilled to the wall. made of metal . quite heavy. though no one needs it now but still is quite nice too have them there. we just put towels and clothes on them. good thing you have them now. hope you are okay now.

I'm really glad to hear you took steps to make your shower safer — that’s not always an easy thing to admit, let alone act on. It takes courage to recognize when something needs to change and even more to actually do something about it. That shower chair and grab bar sound like great choices.
