My Sister's House Was Fried

There are things in life that happen when you literally, and confidently say, "You can't make this up." We had a storm a few days ago and apparently my sister's house suffered a massive lightning strike. It fried her house and now her kitchen refrigerator does not work, the cable and wi-fi is done, and their pool pump is not working. Their son, my nephew, was also listening to something with headphones on when the strike occurred and he was shocked. They are now in contact with their insurance company to see what they can do. Man, I have never heard of anything like this. But wow. If someone told me a story like this I'd be like, "Yeah, right." But it happened. What a weird situation.

Yeah. He's fine. What a scary thing, though. You'd never expect something like that.

Wow. Bad as the news is, it could have been worse. It's good the house didn't go up the smoke.

Yeah. For sure. I don't know exactly where the strike occurred. I always thought houses had built in lightning rods, but I could be wrong about that. What a weird thing to have happen, though.

I thought that if the electricity was well installed nothing happened. But this winter we had a storm here and some of my most delicate electric things stopped working. Even Alexa, the only AI devise I have, stopped anwering what time it was. Fortunatly one of Anita´s nephews knows about those gadgets and made it work again. I hope your nephew is well.

@porwest The most important thing was your nephew´s health.

I suppose it depends on exactly where it strikes and to what. My nephew is fine, but the house is definitely fried. I suspect they may have ongoing issues as well. I remember when I worked for Quad Graphics, something near our UB18 binder machine was struck, and we forever had Gremlins on that production line after that.

I am glad that they are fine, things can be bought and fixed again, but life was not. I guess they have been so shocked.

Still curious where the strike actually occurred. They will have a busy time with electricians and insurance people and whatnot trying to get it all sorted out.

@porwest Their Home Owners Insurance should pay all of it.

Why/how was he shocked when he had his headphones on? Like how is that possible?

Power carries through wires, and static electricity carries through air. Electricity can also jump.

Yeah. Some have said the house could have burned down. I guess a few fried electrical appliances and whatnot is a good trade off, even if the situation still stinks.

More than anything, it's beginning to cost a fortune with costs already rising to around $25,000-$30,000. I really hope the insurance covers all of it or at least a good portion of it.

@porwest That's a lot of damage.

@jstory07 It's mainly from the things it took out. The refrigerator in the kitchen, the garage door opener, the pool pump and all the electronics there... It's not just the replacement of the appliances and other things, but what it did to wiring etc.

Right now it's up in the air. I hope it does for them too. They are looking at somewhere around $25,000-$30,000 worth of damage already.

I sure do remember the nigthmare that happend at our house the first summer I was here, There was a very bad electric storm and lightning went straight for the cable that connects our Internet, We had electric but it took about 3 weeks to get the Internet back etc etc etc and you can imagine I found it hard to get through this time, Luckily, it never happened again,

Lucky that your nephew got away with a shock though not severe. I hope the insurance company is empathetic without delaying a fair settlement.

I hope so too. The cost is quickly adding up. I guess we'll see what the outcome is of all of this. I know they have electricians and insurance people coming through the week. I will try to update anyone here as soon as I know more.

I think the insurance company likely will. I am sure something like that would have to be covered. My sister said the costs are definitely adding up.

Yeah. I even mentioned this to my sister and told her, I thought all houses nowadays had them. Maybe I was wrong about that.

It happened to my neighbor once when I lived in a different town. I am glad your nephew was only shocked. Good luck with the insurance.

I know somebody else in the US who faced this. So I would not disbelieve it. Their entire house was burnt down. Luckily they were out. Some get together. The only thing that surprises me is, do lightening arrestors not do their job? I am so particular about those.

Of course it happens, I remember when the house of a neighbor was hit by lightning, their roof and attic caught fire and burned down. Our house had a lightning protection.
