Figuring Out What Temp to Set The Thermostat at Now

We used to keep the heat at 74F in the house before all the work was done this summer. I set the heat at 70F the last two weeks but have been getting too hot during the nights so I reset the heat to 67F in the house and we'll see what temp it ends up being... Hopefully not too hot and not too chilly for a sheet and blanket moving forward. I asked Pretty if her bedroom was comfortable at night and she said she's been leaving her bedroom door open at night because she was too warm, too. We shall see what happens now. It's supposed to reach 30F/-1C outside tonight. Fall has definitely arrived. Okay, the first experiment is over... Setting the thermometer in the living room for 67F brings the temp in our bedrooms to 74F and the living room to 70F with the bedroom doors closed. Now, I'll leave my bedroom door open and see what temp my bedroom reaches then. (I don't normally leave my bedroom door open because I can hear whatever Pretty is watching/listening to in her bedroom [It sounds like loud mumbling.] and she likes ghost stories. Those aren't my favorite. I prefer scientific videos. Or, listening to various friends/YT influencers playing video games.)

Our heat is set at 72 F for the day and it goes down to 68 F for the night. I cannot sleep if the bedroom is too warm. My husband has an extra blanket so he stays warm all the night long. I like ghost stories too.

My bedroom door has been open for an hour and a half and the temp in my bedroom is at 73F/23C now. I'll need to reset the thermostat to 66F and see if that drops the temp in here to 72F/22C. I think that will still be warm enough for Pretty and be comfortable for me, too. We shall see. We are down to 32F/0C outside now.

@DaddyEvil It's still warm outside, very foggy today and it rains. I am glad we do not need to go out.

@LadyDuck We have a thick frost on the grass that I can see even without the sun coming up yet. The weather app on my laptop says it is 30F/-1C outside right now. That's supposed to be our low for today. The humidity is 100% and I can see the car windows are covered in frost.

I don’t turn my heat on until it gets to 32 degrees or below outside. I spend so much money on air conditioning in the summer that I have to find a way to save during the winter. I can put on layers and tough it out during the winter. But it’s hard to do!

@DaddyEvil You’re such a kind man. When I lived with my parents we argued over the temperature. My mom didn’t care, but my dad said in the summer I needed to keep the air higher. I told him being too hot made me sick. The only time he’d turn the air down was when we’d have company. I told him if he’d do that for a friend he should be willing to do that for a daughter. I mean, it is his house, it’s his right to have it on what he wants. I just figured if I have to be there he could cut me some slack. He’s seen me get migraines because I was too hot. How hot does it really get? So hot a couple who frequently comes over to visit bought him a tower fan. THEY get too hot when they are there; it’s not just me!

I'm sorry you live like that. I dropped the thermostat again to 65F in the house and now my bedroom is at a comfortable 72F. Pretty says that's fine with her, too. We've always fought over the house temp but we eventually settle on temps we can both agree on. (At our last house, I ran a little window air conditioner to keep my bedroom at 69F and she wouldn't let me turn the big air conditioner on. This house has central heat and air so we can't do that.) If we had more room, I'd invite you to come stay with us for a while. This is a very small, two bedroom house with a small living room and a small kitchen and a tiny laundry room. We have a bathroom between Pretty's bedroom and the kitchen.

@AmbiePam True, I would agree that if he changed the temps for friends, he should be willing to change it for you, too. I kept my bedroom cooler because I have hyperthyroidism and that made me sweat even at cooler temps. I'd start sweating at 70F just standing still. If I moved around or worked on something, the temp needed to be colder. FINALLY, when I saw an endocrinologist, he said I needed meds for hyperthyroidism but kept saying the meds he prescribed kept it "under control" without thinking about how long it hadn't been under control. If it was really under control, my eyes wouldn't swell shut and I wouldn't have a whole lot of other symptoms. That's why I argued until Pretty finally agreed that I should switch endocrinologists. When even the eye doctors I saw said the hyperthyroidism wasn't under control, Pretty finally agreed to let me see a different endocrinologist. She was afraid that if I saw a different endocrinologist, that Social Security wouldn't believe there was anything wrong with me and wouldn't let me collect disability. Social Security WON'T let me collect disability so I might as well try to figure out what really under control means for me. Maybe now I'll get some real help with this disease.

I wish people would do that more often. So often its just what we like, but craps became so expensive. Its like we have to make cost up somewhere. My family is terrible at it and drives me nuts. The amount of money we have to pay so they can be perfectly comfortable. How about throw a jacket on or open a window if its to hot. These fools run the air conditioner at night when it is down in the 50's. Its so frustrating and then have to hear how we need more money. If anyone wants the perfect, temperature where they should set the temperature for most bang for your buck. Ask the military. Where they set the barracks temperature at is amazing. Its never really to hot or to cold and there may be times depending who is running the show, but its still close where you just put on a sweater or just walk around in a tshirt. I think of all the things I complained about in Marines and room temperature was never one of them. At least they made me happy in one area.

@DaddyEvil That;s always important never had a kid, but I would do the same for my dogs, closets thing I have to a kid. Brothers and sisters is one thing, we like to do things out of spite to piss each other off, but a parent will never do that to their kid,OK, maybe once or twice but be like that is my kid. I will not do that again where brothers and sisters will.

This is the first house we've rented that had central heat and air. We're used to doing what we want in our bedrooms and it doesn't affect anyone else. At our last house, she'd have a small heater running most of the time and I had air conditioning running most of the time. That doesn't work here so I ask if she's too warm or chilly. She'll pull on extra clothes if she's chilly and her desktop computer seems to give off as much heat as a heater.

I did for now but we can always change it later. I set the living room for 65F. That puts the living room's actual temp at 70F and our bedrooms at 72F. Comfortable for both of us.

@LindaOHio A floor to ceiling window in the living room is what causes the house to be too hot during the summer. I have heavy drapes over it so that helps in the winter.

I always wait as long as possible to "break the seal." Once the house got down to about 65 I caved and turned the heat on. I start low early on, this time setting it to 72. But as we get colder that does get bumped up.

We hit 65F in the house two weeks ago and I turned the heat on. I set it to 74F, which is what we've always kept it at the past winters since we moved here but that keeps the house too hot for me to sleep well now. Last night I started experimenting and have the heat set at 65F now for the living room. Our bedrooms are staying at 72F right now and that's comfortable for both of us. (The temp in the living room is 70F right now. Since we don't spend a lot of time there, that's fine. I'm mostly in my bedroom or the kitchen and 70F is perfect for me.)

@DaddyEvil We tend to do gradual acclimations. By the time you're freezing your butt off at 65, 72 seems rather cozy...until you get acclimated to 72 and have to jack it up. lol

Leaving doors closed is better in case of a fire as well. That is awesome that after the work that was done the house is staying warming. Being able to lower the thermostat will save on heating costs.

Yes, that's true. Leaving my bedroom door closed also means I don't have to listen to whatever show/music she's playing in her room. She doesn't use headphones or earbuds like I do. I don't pay the bills anymore...

Right now the temp is at 65F in the living room. That keeps the living room/kitchen at 70F and our bedrooms at 72F. (Pretty would freeze if the bedrooms got any cooler than that. I used to keep my bedroom around 65F and she'd claim I was storing frozen meat in my room. )

That's good you don't need to set a temp in your house. I live in a climate that can be very hot or very cold in the same day. Sometimes we have heat running in the night and early morning and sometimes air conditioning by the afternoon.

@Shivram59 Yes, I live in the continental US... Almost exactly in the center of the country. It is hilly going to mountainous in my part of the country. 5C is about 40F and I experience MUCH colder temps than that every winter. I have experienced -21F which is about -29C.

@DaddyEvil You live in the USA, don't you?? Here in India we have a climate that becomes extremely hot in summer. But in winter it does not get as cold as in your country. The lowest temperature I have experienced in my life was 5 C.

I leave my thermostat at 67. It is directly across from one front door, but it is not drafty. Our doors stay open. It is a little cool, but we have heated throws for when we are sitting and a heated mattress pad for the bed.

That's the way the two genders work. Women are always too chilly and men are usually too warm. (It didn't help that my thyroid gland is overworking so I'm always too warm. Even taking meds for hyperthyroidism doesn't always mean I'm comfortable in the temps my daughter finds comfortable.) Several years ago I built her a gaming computer and it pumps out a lot of heat. Her bedroom is always warmer than any other room in the house, which helps me stay comfortable at a lower temp in my bedroom.

@Ithink I watch a lot of YT videos and use one of the free video services to get free movies from several different streaming services. I can't sit for long periods of time (I had rectal cancer and it hurts to sit for hours.) so am usually lying on my bed while reading on my phone, watching YT videos or visiting on myLot. My daughter and I don't go outside a lot and do it even less when summer gets really hot here (I live in Southern Missouri.) or when it gets down to freezing. I can't see well enough to drive often and don't want to drive in cold weather (especially if there is ice or snow on the ground). I was forced into early retirement and my daughter doesn't have a driver's license and doesn't want one.

Most women like it warmer than I do... Both my ex-wives kept our houses too warm and I was always sweating in the house. Pretty did that here before all the insulation and new windows were installed. (I told her she could wear more clothes if she's chilly but I can't take off any more clothes when I'm too hot.)
