Ah-ha! Now we reach another album cut, and someone you don’t normally think of when it comes to instrumental music. There are a couple more coming up soon. Meanwhile, sit back and enjoy…no, get up and exercise! Here’s today’s song. Root Beer Rag - Billy Joel Earlier in the countdown I used Scott Joplin’s “The Entertainer,” and I mentioned how influential it was. Here’s another example of its influence. Billy Joel, back in 1974, was just coming off his first “big” hit, “Piano Man,” so you wouldn’t expect him to do something that “self-indulgent,” as Joel later called it. But he did. If you’re familiar with Joel’s work beyond the three big hits, you’ll probably hear traces of the “Prelude” to “Angry Young Man,” and even Joel has admitted that. He doesn’t need to show off what a good piano player he is, but he did that, too. This got a second wind as the B-side to Joel’s 1978 hit “Big Shot.” It’s one of those great album cuts that explains why we loved albums so much back in the 70s. Root Beer Rag Written by Billy Joel Recorded by Billy Joel From Streetlife Serenade, 1974 Hope you like the top of Billy’s head, ‘cause that’s about all you see of him in this clip!

I could do that, I think I taught him a note or two. J/k, that is probably some of the best piano I ever heard with a rhythm that is more my style beside like ska rhythms.

I wish I could say I taught him that…and be telling the truth. That’s amazing piano work.

One side of Billy Joel's musical talent is playing the piano and having a great instrumental tune.

Wow, amazing. He could have been a great pianist only if he so desired. Somehow, don't think he could tickle those ivories quite so quickly these days.

Yeah, he’s being treated for a neurological condition, so his days of speedy playing are on hold.

I’m a Billy Joel fan, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard this before, AND I used to watch The Old Grey Whistle Test. Great keyboard skills!

Lol, I didn't recognize that fluffball and thought it was Dylan! My favorite song of Joel's that really showcases his keyboard expertise is "Stiletto". It's HARD to play those intro chords with that fast timing!

It has an appeal. Maybe for an episode of Dukes of Hazzard or a cartoon or something or may have had its day in an old Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton silent film.... Other than that, I will hope this one falls the way of a pair of socks. You only get one back and it's of no use after that.
