No, this has not been the best of weeks. It is to be expected, of course. I have problems this time of year every year. Tuesday was the 18th anniversary of the passing of my dear mother of blessed memory. Since late October I’ve been having stomach problems, which has seen me seemingly eating more Gaviscon tablets than food. It hasn’t helped. I called the GI clinic and got to talk to a doctor (that’s how to do your appointments in the winter!! ), and he prescribed a stronger GERD pill. Now I’m going to get a little disgusting here…sorry. Most reflux medications share a common side effect of causing constipation. Plus, I have irritable bowel syndrome (which is painful but NOT problematic the way irritable bowel disease is…they’re two different animals), so having constipation causes a lot of pain in my gut and side. Sunday I felt like I might be passing a kidney stone. I mentioned in the music discussion that I thought the family history of kidney stones might be catching up to me, so I spent a lovely Sunday afternoon in the emergency room. It turns out that I was full of s***. (As my brother likes to say whenever this pops up, “I could have told you that and saved you the trip!” ) So lots of fiber and salads later, and things are better. Oh, AND the anniversary of my mom’s death is over. Tuesday, however, after I came home from Cincinnati, my brother ended up in the emergency room as well with chest pains. Same thing: a panic attack. He said he knew in the back of his mind what the day was. Apparently his subconscious decided to slam him with the news. At about 1 AM I had to go “over the river and through the woods” to pick up up when he was discharged. No problem at all: remember, ten years ago, he hopped on a Greyhound and went up to Chicago to take me home after I’d fallen and broken my right ankle. Of course, to paraphrase the Bible, love doesn’t keep a running tally or score of who did what (see 1st Corinthians 13:4-7). So now it’s snowing and we’re both doing well. For his trouble he got appointments for a stress test and an ECG (I told him that’s typical of the VA: have five panic attacks and the sixth one is free PLUS you get the stress test ). We’re good until next year, when the memory of Mom sneaks up on us. The photo has nothing to do with any of this. It’s one of the squirrels who comes by for breakfast.

I'd say that's enough problems for six or nine months, at least. I'm glad you're feeling better now.

Thanks. It happens every year. Maybe they can give me something so I can hibernate next November.

@FourWalls You're welcome. I don't think it works that way, though.

@FourWalls I was talking more about your digestive issues. They can turn serious. Panic attacks are no fun though and are very alarming at the time. Plus the grief over your mother has to be hard.

@snowy22315 — I see my GI doctor at least twice a year, so we’re monitoring things. I don’t know if there’s any research on long term use of asthma inhalers on the reflux. I also have nasal spray that obeys gravity and goes down the throat and esophagus. Don’t know about any of that, but they keep a close eye on it because GERD can really aggravate asthma (which I can vouch for from personal experience).

I'm sorry about your Mother and all the health problems with you and your brother. I hope you both are feeling better. I have IBS-C. Have you ever taken Amitiza? Long story but it finally cured my 30-year-long nausea....until they started giving me diarrhea. I no longer take them;; but the nausea is gone I hope for good. I'm sorry you were full of it.....

No surprise to anyone here that I’m full of it. Never heard of Amitiza. My C in IBS-C doesn’t last long enough to warrant anything past a bottle of magnesium citrate (which is what they gave me in the ER). I have fiber, but all those smoothies I made in the summer (going through a”regular sized” bag of blueberries or strawberries every other day) kept me regular. When it got too cold to have frozen treats I stopped, but forgot to go back to the Metamucil.

@FourWalls The only thing that seems to help for me is lots of nuts or chocolate. Fiber doesn't seem to help. I hope you have a great weekend!

Panic attacks are no fun. And you with the added GERD stuff must be awful. I've been having a bit of tummy trouble too. Sorry the memories have to creep in but that's what we get for loving I suppose. Take care you two.

Funny you should say that, because I thought about that line from “I Am a Rock” by Simon and Garfunkel: “If I never loved I never would have cried.” Thanks for your sweet thoughts.

Oh lord, that's a boat load of crap .... literally. Ummm, not tryin to be rude here. Have you ever eaten sauerkraut? That stuff gives me the runs but maybe it would help with your issue. I'm not really sure what irritable bowel syndrome is but it sounds like its really bad. I was the same way for a few years after my mom passed but it's been 10 years and now I just set up a simple memorial in my living room for her ..... I do the same for dad, it's been 45 years since he passed. So much for anything helpful, sorry but maybe the kraut could help

Eventually it won't hit you as hard it just takes time. The last time I had some I ate too much ..... I read at least 3 magazines while in the 'library'

I haven’t had sauerkraut in ages, to tell you the truth. It’s amazing how quickly I recover after the anniversary passes.

I’m glad it wasn’t a kidney stone! I remember my aunt being hospitalized for kidney stones in the early 70s, and when we went to visit her she was crawling on the floor in pain.

@FourWalls - I know it's really painful because I experienced. I was putting t-shirts in the drawer, I fell on my knees for the pain. I try to drink more water after that experience.

Thank you. We both have home monitors to help curtail the trips to the ER when we have panic attacks, but his wasn’t working and mine hit me differently. Say la vee. (That’s c’est la vie for you who understand French. )

Your mother must have truly been a phenomenal woman. It’s wonderful that you and your brother have such a tight bond, too. I know I miss my sister, we were so close. When someone is going through a lot of emotions, it’s understandable that panic attacks can happen. I’ve never had one, but I have observed several that hit a family member and a good friend. It truly is scary when a person can’t help. I am very glad you are ok and that your brother is, too.
